Settlement Reached in Kobe Bryant Memorabilia Case, Parents Apologize

la_e_goldinauctions02jr_400Kobe Bryant has a major challenge this offseason in recovering from Achilles surgery from mid-April. The legal battle that popped up between Kobe, his mother and an auction firm was a occurrence that was unfortunate and something Kobe tried to have dismissed previously. However, this legal battle is now finished.

According to ESPN, the case involving rare items of memorabilia from Kobe Bryant, ranging from his youth to his career in the NBA, to be auctioned off by a New Jersey auction firm on the behalf of Kobe’s mother, Pamela, has been settled one week prior to going to trial.

The agreed upon settlement allows the auction firm, Goldin Auctions, to still auction 10 percent of the items (six pieces) originally set for auction(shown above) and a written apology from Kobe’s parents, Joe and Pamela, which states:

“We regret our actions and statements related to the Kobe Bryant auction memorabilia,” Joe and Pamela Bryant said in the statement provided by a publicist. “We apologize for any misunderstanding and unintended pain we have caused our son and appreciate the financial support he has provided over the years. We also apologize to Goldin Auctions for their inadvertent involvement in this matter and thank them for their assistance.”

The six items that Goldin Auctions are authorized to auction due to the settlement include two championship rings from the Lakers’ 2000 Finals and two of Kobe’s high school jerseys. Even though the auction now has 90 percent less items, the items that are legal to auction are considered to be among the best items in the collection. In fact, Goldin anticipates that the six items will sell for more than $500,000 combined.

As part of the settlement, half of the auction price on some of the items will go to charity. The auction will start on the 17th of June and close on the 19th of July. ESPN tried to reach Kobe for comment on the settlement, but no comment was given, which is highly understandable.
