Pier Del Sol – Celebrating 40 Years of Special Olympics in SoCal

Santa Monica, Calif., Oct 5, 2009 – At the 40th anniversary party for the Southern California Special Olympics the Los Angeles Lakers were honored at the “Birthday Bash.”  The party took place on the Santa Monica Pier and featured a wide variety of fabulous foods and family fun.  There were plenty of Lakers legends and celebrities alike, and there to cover it was Lakers Nation.

From Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to Angus T. Jones, the Pier was packed with over fifty celebrities all 0ut to support a good cause.  There were several Lakers legends in attendance as well, including Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, and James Worthy.  It was an electric atmosphere as the legends and celebrities alike signed autographs and interacted with fans, providing a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved.

The food was also amazing, as some of the top chefs from around the city brought their best products to the table.  It culminated in a Cake-Off Competition judged by Providence pastry chef Adrian Vasquez, Pulitzer-Price winning food writer Jonathan Gold, and Next Network Food Star Jeffrey Saas.  Fantasy Frostings took home the prize in the Cake-Off, and was just one of over 35 Los Angeles area restaurants that provided food and fun for the attendees.

There were plenty of opportunities for Lakers fans as well, including appearances from the Laker Girls and an opportunity to get a picture taken with the Lakers Championship Trophy.  Everyone was offered unlimited rides and games in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Southern California Special Olympics, which was originally founded by Olympic Decathlon Gold Medalist Rafer Johnson, who was also in attendance.

Overall the event was a tremendous success.  Providing plenty of fun for the whole family and an opportunity to meet plenty of celebrities and several Lakers legends.  The annual Pier del Sol was a fantastic experience for the young and old, and Lakers Nation is honored to have been a part of it.
