NBA News: Brian Shaw Hired As Denver Nuggets Head Coach

Former Lakers assistant Brian Shaw has been hired as the new head coach of the Dever Nuggets, according to Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post.

Shaw was a member of the Lakers during their miraculous stretch from 1999 to 2003, where they won three championships in a row from 2000-02. He also hit a key three-pointer late in the second half against Portland in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, prompting a big Lakers comeback and ultimately a trip to the NBA Finals.

Following his playing career, Shaw spent eight years (2004-2011) serving as an assistant on the Lakers coaching staff, helping the Lakers win two championships under Phil Jackson in 2009 and 2010. It was always assumed that Shaw would follow in the footsteps of the legendary Jackson and coach the Lakers after Phil retired, but the organization felt they need to go in another direction.

After his tenure with the Lakers, Shaw went to Indiana to serve as the associate head coach to Frank Vogel. Shaw was always seen as a highly respected assistant throughout his career in coaching, and earned a reputation for being a guy that would soon be a head coach in the NBA.

Shaw will have tough shoes to fill, replacing George Karl, the 2012-2013 NBA Coach of the Year award winner.
