Mitch Kupchak Believes D’Antoni Will Be “Flexible” Next Season

Mitch KupchakThe Los Angeles Lakers have a busy offseason ahead of them, and a lot of their time will be dedicated to bringing back Dwight Howard.

Nevertheless, the process of re-signing the center will not be straightforward, and it will require a lot on the part of the front office. It does not seem as though Howard is happy in Los Angeles, and there is growing concern that he will not play under the Mike D’Antoni coaching staff.

In Howard’s defense, the coaching staff did very little to adjust the playbook to accommodate the Lakers’ talent. Even though Los Angeles did have two seven footers in its front court, the offense did not use that to its advantage.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak spoke to Lakers.com and stated he believes that D’Antoni will make adjustments next season.

MT: What’s the most difficult thing to do as you build a team?

Kupchak: The hardest thing to do in this league to get players who have talent. The next hardest thing to do is for the coach to figure out the best way to have that group of talent play together and win games. And you have to have a coach that has the ability to assess the talent level and how to use it. Mike has shown that he is flexible. Now that he has a feel of our players and their talent level, I’m confident that Mike will be flexible and get the most out of them next year.

There was a lot of criticism directed toward D’Antoni during the season, and it only increased after the team got swept in the first round. It is expected that the Lakers will make changes to the roster this season, and although Kupchak said D’Antoni’s job is safe in Los Angeles, no one knows what the future holds.
