Lakers News: Mike D’Antoni Explains Pau Gasol’s Recent Resurgence

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Portland Trail BlazersThere’s no question Pau Gasol has played two of his best games of the season this week against the Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers. On Tuesday against New Orleans Gasol scored 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had four assists. Wednesday in Portland he had 23 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. But the most important factor? Both came in Laker wins.

So what’s the reasoning for the success? After Wednesday’s win in Portland, Mike D’Antoni gave his thoughts to Time Warner Cable SportsNet on why Gasol has been playing better.

“Since January he’s played well. Earlier he was just hurt and the system was screwed up.”

It’s not the most profound answer, but it’s logical. Since missing 20 games with a foot injury, it has taken Gasol some time to get back into the swing of things. He’s also been outspoken about his role within D’Antoni’s offense, expressing multiple times that he doesn’t feel he’s being properly utilized.

Regardless, the last two nights Gasol has been the second best Laker on the floor behind Kobe Bryant. He’s been instrumental in both victories, and if the Lakers are going to continue winning and reach the postseason, they’re going to need more nights like this out of Gasol.
