Lakers News: Kurt Rambis To Be An Assistant Coach For Lakers

It has been speculated about this summer, but Kurt Rambis will make his return to the Lakers bench for the 2013-14 season as an assistant under Mike D’Antoni, according to his twitter account.

During previous roles with the Lakers, Rambis focused his efforts on shoring up the Lakers on the defensive side of the ball — and with D’Antoni largely running the team’s offense — it would make sense that Rambis comes back as the Lakers main defensive coach.

Rambis had two stints with the Lakers as a player during his career: from 1981-88 and from 1993-95. After his playing days were finished, he was an assistant coach with the Lakers for 12 years, and was the Lakers head coach during the 1999 lock out season.

With Rambis as the Lakers first coaching hire of the summer, it will be up to Mitch Kupchak and Mike D’Antoni to fill out the rest of the staff before the start of the season.
