The Los Angeles Times writes that the World Poker Tour will honor the great owner with a poker tournament in his name. Buss was a well known figure outside of basketball, and this recent announcement shows just much of a positive impact he had on the community.

On Aug. 25 at 4 p.m., the World Poker Tour Foundation will hold the Frank Mariani & Jerry Buss No Limit Hold ’em Poker Tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens.

The guaranteed prize for the tournament is $20,000.

The entry fee is a $365 buy-in, with 25% of the tournament’s prize pool donated to the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, which focuses “on the use of sports to promote education, teamwork and self-esteem among Los Angeles area youth.”

The Lakers will also play a memorial game for Dr. Jerry Buss, which is a nice gesture for the man who made the Lakers what they are today. Without the efforts of Buss, the Lakers would not be the most recognizable franchise in the NBA, and there certainly would not be 16 championship banners in the rafters.
