Howard will be a free agent once the NBA Finals are over and reportedly has narrowed his choices to re-signing with the Lakers or bolting to the Houston Rockets. However, Bryant made it clear to Dave McMenamin of ESPN LA that he will definitely make a sales pitch:

“For me, you kind of let him do his due diligence and then move in and talk to him and figure out if this is a place he wants to be, Bryant said. We all want him here. But then that’s when the selling begins (after Howard is courted by other teams).

It remains to be seen what Howard is thinking as during the Dwightmare part one, he changed his mind daily. If anybody on the Lakers is going to pitch Howard on remaining a Laker, it’s Bryant.

Kobe faces the toughest test of his career as he tries to recover from a torn Achilles and has made it known that he wants Howard to remain with the Lakers. With Bryant getting up there in age, re-signing Howard would give him the best opportunity to still compete for titles as he enters the twilight of his career.

However, Bryant will let Howard go through the courtship of free agency, he’s going to make sure that he talks to him as he makes his decision:

“You don’t start the selling process right before he goes and does all this stuff. You want to get the last word. You want to have the final word and the closing argument.I’ll give him a little opening statement, but then I have to make sure I have the final word.”

While Pau Gasol said this afternoon that he won’t talk to Howard about his free agency, Bryant sounds like he’s going to let Howard go through the free agency process, but make sure he gets the final word.
