Julius Randle After 1-7 Lakers Start: ‘Throw Our Egos Out The Way’

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered an embarrassing loss Tuesday night at the hands of the Miami Heat. Although the Lakers did manage to keep the game within reach in the first half, they were completely dismantled in the final two quarters. The defense was lackluster and the Heat took advantage of that with a 101-88 victory.

What will Julius Randle make this season? Find out here!

As a team, the Lakers committed 18 costly turnovers and the Heat capitalize on their inability to take care of the basketball. No player in the Lakers starting five had a plus/minus above zero and there just seemed to be very little chemistry on the court. After the game, Julius Randle had a lot to say about the state of the team and what needs to be done moving forward, via Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters:

The Lakers now stand at 1-6 on the season and are once again sitting in the bottom half of the Western Conference. Although this team is not expected to reach the postseason, fans would like to see better performances from a fairly talented roster.

Los Angeles will now complete its back-to-back Wednesday night when it travels to Orlando to play the Magic. The Magic have a great young nucleus and its frontcourt can present many problems for the Lakers big men. If Los Angeles wants to regain some confidence and momentum, it needs to capture a win in Orlando.

1-7? So we lost to the Magic before even playing them? I know we’re bad but dayum. LOL

      1. Who’s to say we win that game at Philly? It’s not like we’re some Road Warriors or something, they’ll find a way to lose that game as well. I’m aware Philly is tanking, but they have had some leads on some big teams in games.

        1. We lead all Wolves and all Knicks game. We lead Heat in a time too. We are figuring out things. We will win today.

  • Randle’s body language in the 4th was terrible; he was clearly frustrated with the flow of the team on both end of the court.

Young guys need to stay in the games longer together; guys like Randle,Russell,Clarkson,Nance,Black. At least three of these guys need to play 40 minutes per game, I just don’t see a reason why in the 3Q and early 4th they need to sit out so long.

    1. honestly that lineup should see floor time at some point. I would just like to see if Nance could keep up with 3’s and lets the Trio get most of the touches.

    2. Nance and Black definitely need to get the majority of the minutes in the second half, rebounding and defense is mainly the reasons why we lost our games and they can provide both of those.

Preferred lineups in the 2nd half:

      1. Russell, Clarkson, Young, Nance, Black
      2. Clarkson, Young, MWP, Nance/Randle, Black
      3. Williams, Young, MWP, Randle, Black

  • i just hope we come out and play with a little fire. Seemed like after half time everybody was lackadaisical in their approach to the game. Its sad when a 35 year old that didn’t play in the NBA last year was the most energetic player on the floor. To me it looks like Byron is starting to loose the locker room. I’m pretty patient with this team because i know they aren’t very good currently. However not having your team motivated to play is unacceptable. It just seems that nobody knows there role on offense theres no consistency to how Byron is calling his offense. Also explains why MWP looks good because there is no question of his role which has been the same for his entire career regardless of team.

  • Ego’s?…..Who on this team has the right to have an Ego besides Kobe or MWP?….Nobody else have won anything to have an Ego Tantrum…LOL.

    1. Nick Young and Lou Wiliiams……
not agreeing with it but they both probably egg Kobe on 1 on 1 with their egos

  • Lou Williams needs to have his minutes severely reduced. He is playing the worst out of all the Lakers at both ends. To be only shooting 32 percent (20 percent from 3) with the second highest usage rate on the team. I’m starting to see why Toronto had no interest in re-signing him. Nick Young is as streaky as they come, but he has his moments where he can get very very hot, I’ve yet to see that with Lou. Nick Young has also been playing some good defense by his standards. He deserves more minutes than Lou does. Just because he won 6th man of the year, which I’m sure was by default rather than efficiency (Isaiah Thomas would have surely won had he played the whole season)

    1. and we didn’t need him with Russell and Clarkson already being combo guards who need the ball and major minutes

    2. Sadly, your assessment of Williams is starting to seem true.

And sadly he’s probably the 3rd or 4th best guy on the team.

It’s gonna be a long season.

      1. Swaggy P is garbage. Yes he can shoot the 3.. but he doesn’t pass, can’t rebound and plays terrible defense..he will be remembered as the clown of the worst Laker teams of all time.

        1. You clearly haven’t been watching him this season, by far the most efficient on the team and he’s playing defense.

    3. Lou played well in Toronto because he was never the focus of the offense when he comes in to replace a starter; so far in LA when he comes in there are no consistent first #1 option and as a result he becomes the focus of the offense which he clearly is not and should not be.

    4. I’ve been saying you use Lou sparingly never starters minutes, his style of play doesn’t translate to good basketball.

    5. It’s not Lou’s fault the starting unit led by Russell are always down by double digits by the time he and Young check in the game. He and Nick are constantly playing behind the 8-ball which naturally makes them even less selective than normal with their shots. Lou seems like the best at getting to the ft line of any player we have right now.

    6. That’s because Scott is forcing him to be the PG off the bench. Lou needs to be traded along with Bass and soon.

  • Nobody on this team should have any kind of ego at this point. The Lakers need to get this crap together plain and simple. Defensive rotation and interior defense is poor, the offensive plays look so predictable with little to any ball movement. Don’t know why Scott is making Kobe either post up in the high/low post or come off screens or pick and roll for his points, instead of just letting him ISO in the corner or at the top of the key. The lakers looked better last year, as a Laker fan I am just disappointed at this point. Also Tariq Black, and Larry Nance need more playing time, and they need to bring back the big man we sent to the D-league.

    1. No Kobe ISO plays – none please! He is supposed to post up and not do ball handling and iso plays. If it becomes another season of Kobe ISO plays, then the offense never gets the chance to gel, the kids don’t learn, and I will quit watching.

  • Randle is in the down side of his open and down season. Larry Nance is clearly outplaying him right now. Pretty normal, he is a rookie with 1 year of college experience. Play alongside Hibbert don’t help him too, the guy can’t get a Defense rebound.

    1. hibbert needs to stop over helping. he leaves his man to help a perimter player and when that person takes the shot his man gets easy rebounds. he needs to find a happy middle

  • This is exciting – Coach Byron will show against Magic, his decision for the Starting Five . . . Win or Develop ??

Why decide to Start D’Angelo? Is it to just get Developmental D’lo the 21 minutes?

When Game is on line and Lakers going for win, D’lo is no where to be found – riding the Pine

So why even Jeopardize, the win early in game, by starting Russell and 21 mins?

It is apparent to Myself, that Coach Byron wants to / Needs to Win games, for Job Security – – sooo,

Why even play Russell, when if Coach Believes D’lo is hurting Lakers, and cannot be counted on when game is on the line

    1. Man, i respect every opinion here. But i think our defense rebound is our main issue right now. He are outrebounded every game in this season.
Is not about D’angelo, is not about Kobe…
The defense get better and the offense ritym is been acceptable, special in this road trip. But our lack of rebound is really killing us

      1. u right.. Black is the only one getting boards for us. Our Center is suppose to be our last anchor on defense, and avg double fig on the reb stat sheet.. Hibb and Julius need to step it up in the middle.. now i know Bosh took JR out the paint but he needs to find his way back in there.. as a team collectively they need to reb but i put more blame on those too players for our board and rim protection problem.. hibb is 7 2 like wtf..

          1. forgot bout my boy Larry… yes he as well.. Laker never address our middle or SF position. well they did with Hibb but i never like that damn fool.. softer then Pau and too weak for that size.. he should be like Utah center Gortat or something like that…. total opposite..

        1. It’s not that simple. Alot of times Hibbert has to come out of the paint to contest the shots of guards who are getting by Russell, Clarkson and Kobe. He is caught out of position so the other team’s center benefits from this

          1. even Randle is playing like a better pg right now than Dangelo.
and honestly so is lou williams.
quite a few times i see him bringing the ball up the court.
            hes not doing so bad……..

  • G. Dragic: 2 for 10 last night(90 million dollar pg) made 1 shot on russell all game the other was lou

  • D Lo Not playing at the end of close games doesn’t bother me.. especially if we can win and Lou and JC is in the back court. .. I just would like to know whats BS development plan for D Russ.. 21 min should be Kobe minutes not Russ.. Probably Scott is taking it slow on Russ.. i have no clue .. frm CP3 to Irving he played them hard.. but with Russ its a gentle process.. Russ , even tho have court vision like Magic, have not played PG.. more of a scorer.. we will have to wait it out i guess

      1. lol i never said he was, i just said it doesn’t bother me like its bothering most.. he gets buckets.. thats the key for BS… im assuming

      2. Last season in Toronto, his team wasn’t behind by 12 pts everytime he checked in the game either.

        1. You don’t win 6th man without being a closer. Odom, Crawford, McHale and others closed out games with starters. Same as Lou in Toronto, Philly and in Atlanta as well.

          1. I don’t need to entertain the point you attempted to make Soku, If lou is so valuable why did a young team on the rise like the raptors get rid of him? Why can’t he stick with one team? Don’t get me wrong I liked the pick up but I never expected scott to use him for 80 percent of the 4th quarter.

    1. Russell is playing 25 minutes per game which is a lot for a 19 yr old rookie. How many minutes does he need to make an impact lol? Lou is gonna get minutes no matter what because he’s a proven player and they didn’t bring in Huertas just to sit and watch either. Scott doesn’t owe anyone “X” amount of minutes. He’s gonna go with whoever is playing the best and being aggressive.

      1. i dont think you understood my blog at the end of the day it falls on BS .. so lets see what he do. Huertas nice, but he’s still a rookie to this league as well. Cant shoot 3s and defense sucks Russ and Lou will continue getting pt at the pg position

    2. Did you just say “Magic” and “Russell” in the same comment bruh? I’m hoping you didn’t just say what I think you said….lol….

  • iam sorry but if MWP is starting 4 da Lakers in 15-16 we got a problem. as far as egos no one on dis team is a winner idk what dat problem is. what’s so hard about just playing basketball

    1. It’s a lot harder when your pg play is subpar. Trust me, if we had a really good pg and floor General, things would be different.

      1. Everybody was crying when the Lakers were interested in Lawson and Rondo. Saying it would of stunted Russell’s growth, but it would of been perfect for him to learn from the bench in the 4th quarters or when he gets subbed in or out.

        1. Yep, As mad as I am about Russell, I’m still a Laker fan who hopes he breaks out. It’s this team’s only hope. He needs to become a man out there.

        2. I don’t care if he starts or not, as long as it’s consistent and as long as he’s playing the #1. This switching back-and-forth with Clarkson and Williams nonsense is what’s stunting him.

          1. that and he is not ready he still has flaws that say should have stayed 1 more year in college

        3. Rondo is struggling in Sacremento with a better team and clashing with Karl already and Lawson is an arrogant alcoholic. They were definitely not going to be good mentors for him.

    2. I thought so too but he was the only one other than Nick who was actually productive and putting in effort. I was surprised by all the threes he made.

  • I wonder if him saying “ego” he is talking about Scott.. West said something similar after Byron left.

        1. Lakers haven’t had a set rotation. Byron has maintained that guys who dont execute the game plan will sit while other get playing time. So i dont see how Randle can criticize the rotation. Not running the plays that on the PG.

    1. LOL, you are so against Byron Scott that everything is about him. Randle said “our egos” and yet you have determined that he could be talking about Byron Scott! If you had said Byron could be one of the persons, that would be different, but you decided that it must be or at least COULD be Byron.

      Man, let it go!

  • What’s with all the Debbie Downers? They’re no worse than they were last year and they’re only 2.5 games away from the 8th seed.

See? It’s all about the silver linings!

    1. That is actually true, but given the fact that 10 games haven’t been played yet….let’s hold that 2.5 games out of 8th place for now. LOL

    2. Last year, they started the season with a brutal schedule, playing the Rockets, Spurs, Warriors, Suns (twice) and Clippers. We’ve couldn’t have asked for a softer schedule to start this season. We have one victory against the winless Nets.. that’s like a resistable force meeting a moveable object.

  • You don’t lose like the Lakers have thus far with the talent that they have and it not be an attitude issue. I’m not surprised at all. This team is good enough on paper to be at least a .500 ball club. However, the difference between where they are and that is all attitude.

      1. Nope…It’s attitude. Easily they should have won Game 1. They should have won against New York as well. At the very least, that would make them 3-4 versus 1-6.

    1. Yes, there is a noticeable lack of talent, but when you’re 29th in the league in assists and FG% and tied for 26th in opponent FG%, it suggests a lack of coaching as well.

      1. Defense is all about effort…so is rebounding. The Lakers don’t play hard. The talk during training camp and preseason was that this team would win some games early simply because they were in better condition for the season. I haven’t seen them benefiting from all of the hard preseason practices.

        1. That’s on coaching. Modern athletes stay in shape year-round for the most part, you don’t need to push them in training camp any more. If anything, they probably need more time to let their bodies heal.

          1. You’re doing it again…I also said “there is a noticeable lack of talent”.

          2. The “but” all but cancelled out what was said prior to it. If you want “there is a noticeable lack of talent” to be maintained, you should have said AND instead of BUT. As for me “doing it again”, I’m really not sure what you mean.

  • If Byron Scott threw his Ego out of the way, it would be an airball, and he’d say it was because the rest of the team wasn’t playing ‘hard’

  • soooo….anyone still think we could get Cousins?? The Kings are looking pretty whack right now, according to recent reports

      1. Wishful thinking but it will never ever happen nephew….The Kings would give the Lakers back Vlade Divac dead remains before they give us Cousins for Hibbert bum self….

Edited: Or if the Kings looking to bump a $15.5 million contract next year, we got what they looking in Hibbert….

  • I’m glad to hear Kobe come out foward and make this comment…..O wait a second, that wasn’t 20 year pro Kobe….That was 1 year pro Julius Randle….SMH….Anyways, keep faith young man, thing will work themselves out….
    Go Lakers!!!!!

  • if durant misses a significant amount of time this season due to injury is he still a max player? before you say this is a stupid question keep in mind this is the 3rd year in a row he gets injured, the previous 2 years were season ending…. dam they dont make superstars like they used to wade was right kobe is the last of them. bron is also falling apart.

    1. And yet Lebron’s team is 7-1 and first place in the Eastern conference. And he’s averaging over 25 ppg.

          1. Well he “could” be fired and it seems likely he will. Look for a Hibbert-cousins trade rumor to start brewing too

          2. Vlade is not giving up Cousins. Especially not to us when he could get a Kings ransom for him elsewhere.

          3. Funny cause many of those guys would trade our #2 pick for Boogie in a heartbeat now. And many of them would kill for Rondo when he was a locker room cancer that was washed up just 5 months ago. O_O

  • Here we go yet again with the trust issues on a Scott coached team. And only 7 games in? I’m really trying hard to be patient.

  • Need a better game from clarkson, I love his game but I’m skeptic of individual success on a 18 win team. Thought he played horrible last night in multiple phases, you know D’angelo throws no-look passes you of all people should be ready to catch them no more excuses.

  • That means 3 to 4 passes per possession. Not Lou trying to draw fouls, Nick with the step back contested 3, J.C. with his Westbrook impersonation, Kobe and his I still got it shot selection, and Randle and his run away bull missing lay up self. Hibbert and Russell are the only ones that will pass and try to run the plays. Hard for Russell to stand out as a point when his teammates are black holes when they receive the pass.

  • Why is Randle’s play so erratic? The Lakers would go and draft some mediocre players while everyone else gets productive players right out the gate.

  • Byron said he is happy with D’Angelo’s preparation, work ethic, but doesn’t want to throw everything at him at once.

Scott feeling pressure from the media the first sign of his demise……………………

  • So what is the health issue with #24? Anyone seen anything in the Knicks game that is obvious or telling?

  • Was last night’s loss because of Kobe too?

“He didn’t cheer hard enough from the bench!!”
“Not only is he slow on defense, he’s slow at handing out Gatorade!!”
“He wore a suit to the game, he’s out shining his teammates. He’s selfish…”

    1. aren’t you a lil late with that comment??? its been said about a million times already and it still doesn’t make sense

  • Why is ESPN talking about the Lakers right now and the game isn’t even playing on there tonight? They are obsessed.

      1. A family member had it on in another room and I could hear them yapping about Lou and the Lakers…bunch of damn haters.
