A couple weeks ago, the Los Angeles Lakers brought in 12 draft prospects for workouts. Although none of the big-name players like Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins or Joel Embiid worked out for the team, quite a few promising prospects showed up and put their skills on display in hopes the Lakers take a chance on them with the seventh pick in the upcoming 2014 NBA draft.

One of those draft prospects was UCLA’s Zach LaVine. It remains uncertain where LaVine will go in the draft or even if he will be a lottery pick at this point, but he may have improved his draft stock after blowing people away at the Lakers workout with a 46-inch vertical.

LaVine continues to show his athleticism and ability to jump out the gym with this Vine that was posted by Jordan White on Saturday. LaVine is seen pulling off a behind-the-back jam with relative ease.

According to the latest mock draft by MyNBADraft.com, LaVine will go to the Boston Celtics at No. 17 and Oklahoma State product Marcus Smart will land with the Lakers at No. 7.

Obviously, anything can happen come draft day on June 26, but it is expected to see LaVine not drafted with a lottery pick.

Don’t be fooled by athletic freaks: dunks don’t win rings. And Lakers are all about winning rings.

    • comrade24

exactly. athleticism isn’t the end all, but it sure helps when you’re young. These players have to work on fundamentals through and through because once that athleticism fades you have to have the fundamentals to fall back on. That’s why Kobe has been so successful. Afro Kobe used to jump out of the building, but he can’t do that anymore so he’s relentlessy worked on his post up game and footwork and has remained effective. All that said, can’t wait to see Lavine in the slam dunk competition in coming years!

      • Raffaele D’Abrusco

        You’re comment is spot on.

        • carew10

lavine has a great shoot also!

          • Raffaele D’Abrusco

            I’m not saying he’s bad.

You’re right but he can shoot too. Imagine what Kobe would do with him!

    • They call me Pringles

      But Shannon Brown won rings?

      • Pilar Pauline-Knudsen Robles

        With very minimal impact, yes.

    • TheTruthKills

Kobe was once considered an athletic freak and he turned out okay. Russell Westbrook is one of the best point guards in the league. Derrick Rose won an MVP award and is great when healthy.

    • VillainKing

Marcus Smart is better than him..

      • cj

        smart cant shoooooooooottttttttttttttttttt

        • VillainKing

But he can learn it because he is a hardworker type player and full of determination..

          • cj

we dont know if smart can play defense at this lvl. defense can be taught shooting on the other hand is hard to learn. look at guys like wade, parker, and andre miller. these are players that have been in the nba for years and they still are poor three point shooters.

          • Travis

Marcus Smart shot over 50% in college from 2 point range but he did struggle from 3 point range at a low 29%.So he is a bad 3 point shooter but a great 2 point shooter. Also shot 75.1% for his career at the free throw line which is decent.

But yeah he must make that 3 point shot to be considered a good shooter, but saying he can’t shoot and is misguided information especially when you look at the fact he scored 39 points in a game this season and he had many other high scoring games.

But otherwise you’re concern with his defense is unfounded as he is one of the best defenders people have seen in a long time.Greg Anthony was a great defender himself and he compares Marcus Smart on ball defense to Gary Payton that’s a good thing.I personally think he is a great defensive player and he will do great on the NBA level defensively. But i won’t change you’re god damn opinion nor do i intend to.

          • cj

he very well could end up being a good defender. but devin ebanks and darris moris were said to be good defenders coming out of collage and it did not translate. wes jhonson was also looked at as a + defender and look how hes turned out. all im saying is defense does not really translate threw the leagues. shooting, athelaticism, and heart do. if we were to go after a pg not named exum i would get lavine first.

          • Travis

Well Marcus Smart and Dante Exum are my 1 and 2 for the point guards in this draft.I really want the Lakers to get a point guard that can defend and do many other things.

Zach Lavine is a interesting young point guard prospect.I honestly think the huge success of Russell Westbrook is helping out his draft value and that’s because they are similar athletes and the both attended UCLA and they put up similar stats in college and they both are early entrants to the draft. If Zach Lavine can somehow prove he can be better at passing the basketball then i would be 100% sold on him as the Lakers next great point guard.I want us to get a great point guard i been waiting for a rookie point guard to lead the future since Magic Johnson retired,we had Nick Van Excel but he was too inconsistent and a bad shot selection guy but i did enjoy watching him play.

Zach Lavine only averaged 1.8 assists per game we need that to triple if we draft him at #7.Marcus Smart averaged at 4.8 assists per game so that’s why i am leaning towards the Lakers drafting Smart also Smart got 3 steals per game and 5.9 rebounds per game also scoring 18 points per game while shooting 51.4 % from 2 point range also he does have a lot of heart and passion on the basketabll court,he plays intense and hard. Now Zach Lavine shot 69% from the free throw line and his field goal % was under 45% that can be improved. Also his defense can be improved,it’s not good but it should get better in time.

If Zach Lavine can get those assists up to around 5 or 6 per game and give us 12 to 18 points per game within 3 years that would be great.Marcus Smart is a NBA ready now player while Zach Lavine may need more time developing into a NBA player but he seems like a great athlete and he is fast enough to be a offensive weapon also he can make shots to keep himself in the conversation of being drafted in the lottery that’s good for his future.Zach Lavine is no scrub and he is legit as a NBA prospect and he will shut a lot of haters up.

But if you’re asking me today how do i pick my point guards it’s Marcus Smart,Dante Exum,Zach Lavine,Tyler Ennis,Elfrid Payton,Shabazz Napier in that order exactly.Carson from ASU will be a second round pick or he might be undrafted and play on a NBA team regardless.

Those are my thoughts on the whole debate between bloggers choosing between Smart and Lavine. It’s preference over substance.Everyone will have the answer in a few years.Man i wrote a essay right now lol ha ha ha.

          • cj

i agree smart is more nba ready now i wont argue that but the guy with the bigger upside is lavine. if we draft a pg this draft we wont be winning anything anyways this year so y not go and get the guy with the upside. this is what teams that are rebuilding do wrong. they go and get the nba ready player instead of the more talented player.

          • VillainKing

Kobe wants to win his six ring so the Lakers will draft the most NBA ready right now they will draft a PG that would be Marcus Smart and I’m sure Smart will become a great player than Lavine..

          • cj

the lakers should not go into this draft thinking of kobe. they need to think after kobe. smart will be a good player but he wont be a superstar. lavine has the looks of a westbrook type player that is a superstar. the lakers need to draft for the future.

          • VillainKing

Lavine a superstar NNNNOOOOOOOO..Smart is the one that have the talent and potential to become a superstar in the NBA!!!!!

          • cj

no smart wont ever be anything more then a poor mans andrea miller

          • VillainKing

            You are correct Travis..

          • VillainKing

He can play defense for sure!! Smart is competitive player so he can play defense at NBA level also he had all the physical tools and skill in playing defense..

          • cj

and lavine is 66 and long he has all the makings of a good defender. dont forget kobe coming out of hs was called an athletic freak that needed to work on his defense so teams passed on him look at him now.

          • VillainKing

But we all know that Smart defense is more special than Lavine..Lavine is athletic but Smart is more physical more faster more stronger and more competitive than Lavine..And Marcus Smart and Kobe Bryant are the same they are ready and not afraid of accepting the challenge..they have the same killer instinct..

          • carew10

what do you think exactly, that the players don’t improve never?

          • VillainKing

So Marcus Smart can improve his shot that’s right..All I’m saying that Smart defense is way above Lavine..

        • VillainKing

          Lavine cant play defenssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

        • comrade24

this is not an excuse to pass him over. Come on! Tons of players aren’t great shooters when they come into the league. Shooting is much easier to teach than hustle and heart.

          • VillainKing

            Agree of you..

  • rik

lakers need marcus smart more than lavine. the lakers get burned by point guards night in and night out. nash is terrible on D, marshall is very bad on D, and farmar is ok on D but he can only play good D on backup point guards. smart can be a lowry type of point guard that the lakers need to defend the likes of westbrook, paul, lillard, curry, parker, conley, irving, and wall

    • cj

we dont know if smart can gaurd at this lvl but we do know he cant shoot.

      • VillainKing

Yes he can guard at NBA level and his shooting can be improve especially a player like him that full of determination..

  • Bruce

Marcus Smart has great length and awesome strength he trumps Zach Lavine physically but Zach Lavine trumps everyone athletically.Zach Lavine is Gerald Green 2.0!That’s not a good thing as it took Gerald Green 7 years to make it.

    • cj

green never had a kobe to teach him

  • rik

if someone ends up taking smart before us in the draft then the lakers have to pick aaron gordon. that terrible team last year could score without kobe. the lakers desperately need players who can defend well. possible team next year:
    PG: Lowry/ Farmar/ marshall/ nash
    SG: kobe/ bazemore
    SF: Ariza/ young
    PF: Gordon/ hill/ kelly
    C: Gortat/ sacre
the lakers snatch up the wiz two free agents ariza and gortat but the wiz can easily replace them with monroe and rudy gay or deng
    heres the numbers:
    lowry 7 mil
    kobe 23 mil
    ariza 7 mil
    gordon 2 mil
    Gortat 7 mil
    farmar 2 mil
    marshall 1 mil
    nash 9 mil expiring contract
    bazemore 1 mil
    young 5 mil
    hill 3 mil
    kelly 1 mil
    sacre 1 mil

  • Professor F.

Just remember Jordan Farmar had the highest vertical leap of all players during his workout year–a staggering 42-inches. And we all know how he turned out.
