In May 2012, Steve Nash was appointed as the general manager for the Canadian team. In the video above, Nash explains his goal of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics with Grantland’s Bill Simmons. With players like Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Robert Sacre, Tyler Ennis, and Kelly Olynyk, Nash knows the team is talented, but the roster has never played international basketball.

While the Canadian team is extremely young and the 2020 Olympics is a more realistic goal as each player gains experience, Nash and his staff are trying to speed up the process. However, with talented players, they’ll give themselves a chance to compete in the 2016 Olympics.

How bout’s spending mo X in Canada next season instead of wasting a spot here?

  • fakerstolkaer

this is now, really pathetic, a player is on a payroll, and is talking about another job he is doing. irrelevant. really guys , cmon!!

    fakerstolakerstoloosers

  • Daryl Peek

Really people? Nash can’t have outside interest? Next season is likely his last in the NBA. Bashing him for prepping himself for life after b-ball?!? Unbelievable

    • fakerstolakers

If you were paying someone $10 million dollars a year, that is your job. Perhaps, that is why the Lakers are last right now. All these employees on the Lakers payroll, and they are working for someone else.

      $10 M/year!!!! You work for the Lakers…..PERIOD

      • Daryl Peek

When did NBA players become slaves? When did paying someone 10 million or 100 million mean you can’t have outside business ventures? Should Kobe not be involved with all of the outside business ventures he’s involved in? Was Shaq wrong for doing all he did outside of basketball, movies, rap albums, ETC…?

        You’re sounding ridiculous!!

        • fakerstolakers

absolutely not…..it all depends on what is in the contract..clearly, endorsements is different than running another basketball team..there is a conflict of interest..most business contract will have a non-competing clause.

just as Nash would not be allowed to work for another NBA team. running a CDN national team is a team, and there is a potential for a conflict of interest in competition of being loyal to the Lakers or the CDN national team.

AND NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT SLAVERY. LET”S NOT EXAGGERATE TO GET THE POINT ACROSS.

          • Daryl Peek

Nash does not own or work for another NBA team. If there was a conflict of interest the league would address this so who’s exaggerating? SMH

          • fakerstolakers

I do not need the league’s opinion to dictate that there is a conflict.

            There is a conflict.

Team Canada may not be an NBA team, but it is still a team. And the players on Team Canada plays in the NBA.

          • Daryl Peek

Therein lies the problem. You don’t make the rules. The NBA does.

          • hookedonnews

That is some convoluted reasoning you’re employing there.

          • Chrmngblly

            yeah, let’s not exaggerate…:-)

        • Chrmngblly

Most of the forefathers of NBA players were slaves around 300 years ago. Pay attention. Who doesn’t know that? Why did you bring this up, anyway? Are you playing the “race card,” peek?

          • Daryl Peek

Context, it was a metaphor SMH

          • Chrmngblly

            Cracker…:-)

          • Daryl Peek

            SMH

          • Chrmngblly

SMH??? scratching my hump?…hair? hole?? what are you scratching?

…and what is a metaphor, anyway?

    • Chrmngblly

C’mon, Daryl. You know the gimpy Canuck is not here out of love for the Lakers. Geez. He’s here these days for the paycheck–and possibly that custom Jaccuuzi they got for him. Do you suppose he even goes to team meetings or practices anymore? They must excuse him from all that when he flies up to see his Canadian masseuse. If he was a real teammate, he would be spending time coaching Farmar and Marshall–who is still waiting for your apology, btw. You have to admit, Nash is bashable. He is total dead weight to this franchise and his teammates. If he is going to take the team’s money and still be a man, he should do whatever he can do to earn it. That’s what a man does.

      • Daryl Peek

So Kobe jumping on a plane to Germany in the middle of the season without notifying the team is just fine? The FO knew about Nash’s trips. Shaq opting for surgery in August when he needed it at the previous seasons end is all good even tho it caused the end of the Kobe Shaq duo according to Phil?

KM, Blake, Farmar and Meeks have all said Nash has done much for them in helping them understand the D’Antoni system and some of the in’s and out’s of being a ball handler in the NBA. Remember how amped up his teammates were when he came back?

Nash is waiting on yours and all of the Lakers Nation who been flat out disrespectful to him in calling him dead weight and a thief, something I’ve never done with Marshall.

        • Chrmngblly

That’s because you don’t write BS as well as I do…:-)
I do disrespect Nash, though. I have explained why. The party’s over for Nash and he just keeps hanging around.

          • Daryl Peek

Guilty with an explanations will not be taken into consideration when assessing the penalty due for slander in the name of buffoonery. Municipal court gavel slam! *Judicial blank stare*

          • Chrmngblly

I amuse to teach; a teaspoon full of sugar and all that. I have no need to bully and brow-beat.

Sometimes I feel like Aesop telling fables to children…:-)

          • Daryl Peek

I delight in watching sugar dissolve as I stir it up in a morning cup of Joe.

Presumption of substance offered up for consumption always kick starts my day…

          • Chrmngblly

You are fun, if frequently misinformed. For some others, the lights are on and no one is home….:-)

          • Daryl Peek

You are quick wit with misinformation. Provocation is your goal as a quasi troll. I engage all types, that’s just the way I roll… lol
