VIDEO: Magic Johnson Says ‘Too Many Ex-Lakers Working For Other Teams’

Lakers legend Magic Johnson has been very vocal about the state of his former team and the direction the franchise is going. It’s no secret that the five-time NBA champion isn’t happy about what is going on with Lakers and wants to see some drastic changes sooner rather than later.

One thing that has bothered Magic recently is the fact that there’s too many former Laker greats working for other organizations in the NBA. Magic went down the list of former Lakers players, coaches and front office personnel currently working elsewhere on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday.

Magic mentioned Jerry West (Golden State Warriors), Pat Riley (Miami Heat) and now Phil Jackson (New York Knicks) as examples.

With no clear indication of master plan for the Lakers moving forward, there’s a lot of uncertainty if this team can bounce back and contend in a highly competitive Western Conference. Although there was “no role” for Jackson with the Lakers, the 11-time NBA champion leaving town, and his fiance Jeanie Buss, for the Knicks was a severe blow.

Despite Magic and Kobe Bryant asking for changes, the Lakers turning it around during the off-season doesn’t seem likely. There will be limited options in free agency and no telling what players they’ll be able to land in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Needless to say, the rebuilding process will take some time with potentially a few more disappointing seasons on the horizon.

True, tho many of these Laker members want the top spot. There’s only so much room available but not having Jerry West shows lack of dexterity in FO’s side given his small roll (which he prefers) with the GSW.

Just shows some of the Buss’s over confidence in believing that they can do better than the experienced people (Behind the scene) who were the team’s true strength in keeping the brand at the top tho they never got the credit they deserved.

Didn’t Phil himself have a hand in Jerry West no longer in the Laker organization. I read plenty if times how Phil dissed him in more than one occasion.

      • Daryl Peek

Not only that, West like Riley and Mike Dunlevy were all allowed to leave by Dr. Buss due to him not being willing to add to the FO, or uproot incumbents, just the same as he didn’t want to with Phil over Jimmy or Mitch.

      • Jim213

Yes, but in the end FO had the final say NOT Phil and the same can be said for the situation today. But things may have been different back then given Phil was the HC. But in the end if the info was correct it was from both sides (Buss’s and J West) that he left the organization tho Phil’s displeasure didn’t help given the situation needed to be addressed.

Magic lended his voice in 1991 in helping Dr. Buss and West try to procure Charles Barkley. The Chuckster never became a Laker at a time the team desperately needed another star player. Philly was unwilling to send Charles to LA even though they’d been shopping him? Art of the deal/FO dexterity is not always an exact science no matter the gravitas of the persons negotiating. Sometimes patience’s is your only option as it was in the early 90′s.

Can you edit this one more time?

      • Daryl Peek

        ?!?

        • Chrmngblly

          Grammar. I don’t understand it.

          • Daryl Peek

What’s not to understand? And I know you’re fully aware of what the message is.

If that is the case, Lakers need to start digging into Durant. He will be the MAN for the next 6 years. But, why would Durant come here, unless, maybe Curry is here, plus, a big rebounding center.

LBJ will be over in next one or two years.

          • Daryl Peek

I highly doubt KD or LeBron leaves those teams. We’ll see though.

It shouldn’t be about hiring Ex Lakers. It should be about hiring the best and most qualified and proven people for the specific job. Phil is unproven as a GM. If u was hiring a GM, my first call would be to either Presti if OKC or Buford of the Spurs.

Jim Buss is the evil seed planted by the late Jerry Buss. It’s the evil empire known as the Lakers to you and me.Mike D’Antoni has run the franchise into the ground literally and this is worst than anything i have ever seen before.Until Jim Buss fires the mumbling retard Mike D’Antoni this will only get worst. My beloved Lakers are down the drain thanks to Pringles and Jim Evil Buss.Doomed is the Lakers.Restore order we need Jerry West,Pat Riley,Phil Jackson right where they belong in the Lakers front office and Phil or Pat coaching or Spoelstra coaching as a Riley 2.0.Jim Buss wake up and smell the coffee man this is the Lakers we need assurance that we can still win championships. This is futility 23-46.SMH

None of what you wish for has the remotest possibility of happening. How has MDA run the franchise into the ground? He’s not the one who picked the players, and he’s not responsible for the unprecedented injuries. This is the kind of irrational thinking that is all too common in the fan-base. Just how far did you think this team was going with this roster? They were predicted to be no higher than 12th in the West with everyone playing. Time to stop dreaming about championships when you’ve got a roster full of injured players most of whom couldn’t start on any other NBA team.

      • jabbs

Agreed @hookedonnews:disqus it’s not Dantonis fault for doing his job, hes just not the best at it, with the fact that Buss is the real idiot who picked a coach who runs a system for 20 year old high flyers. He thought he can get that showtime back with this old team?? proves he knows nothing about basketball. Dantoni has to go and Jim buss needs to hire someone that knows basketball…

        • hookedonnews

Actually it was Dr. Buss who wanted the return to Showtime and wanted D’Antoni. Phil Jackson confirmed that recently. Maybe it was unrealistic, but there were a lot of factors last season other than the age of the team that made it a difficult year. The team this season has a lot of younger players who are very comfortable with that style of basketball, but the number of games missed by key players like Nash, Kobe, Blake, Farmar, Young, Henry, Meeks, etc. have made it impossible to compete.

You don’t have to be 20 to play in D’Antoni’s system. The Spurs run a form of it, and their big 3 aren’t getting any younger. The Knicks ran it last season with an older team than the Lakers. Injuries have been the main problem the last 2 seasons. If they bring in another coach, he more than likely will be using a similar system because most of the teams in the league use some form of it.

The talent level of this team is not super high right now, but some great free agents in the next couple of years should help the Lakers return to the top of the West. At least that’s what we’re all hoping for.

If you’ve read Jeanie Buss’s comment I don’t think you’re going to see any new faces in the FO anytime soon.

  • Magic Man

Fire Mike D’Antoni i am begging you please Jim Buss.

  • Marty Susman

I wish Magic would BUY the team.

  • hookedonnews

What is the point of him saying this? Does he think Phil, West, or Riley are coming back to LA? Jeanie has already made the position of the family clear. Magic needs to stop making these statements that accomplish nothing but cast a negative light on the Buss family and by extension the Lakers.

  • k.

Time will tell how well these two (Mitch & Jim) will do in selecting talent in the draft. There is always a talented player that gets past up and we shall see if they can scout well enough to find the gem. Believe it or not the Lakers are rebuilding for the next coming years. Even if they land good talent who will be the one coach to pull all talent together and be a presence in the locker room?

Get ready for a bumpy ride Laker fans. This is a new era in management.

  • Shannon

True I’d rather they stick close to home but the Lakers can’t hire every former Laker to work for them. What else are these guys supposed to do? And why doesn’t Magic buy part of the Lakers so his opinions, and he has a lot of them, can be heard? Didn’t he SELL his share of the Lakers? If you aren’t part of the solution you are part of the problem.

    • Chrmngblly

You are correct. What we need is for all these Butt-Kissers and Worshippers to quit bending over for the thoroughly dead Dr. Buss. His big “plan” to secure lifetime employment for his wayward son, Jimmy will and must be discarded. Does everyone realize that Jimmy gave up 4 first round picks and 2 second round picks for Howard and Nash? Plus Bynum, Odum and more. That is a massive, massive talent drain for zero return on investment. The fans are giddy right now over just having one first rounder.

So just saying we had bad luck and hanging our heads IS the problem. This is unacceptable. Somebody needs to pay for these mistakes.

  • samuel

Man Magic gets dumber every time he speaks. What’s next? He’s going to be upset because we let Chick Hearn go?
