Tracy McGrady Says He Would Have Got Along With Shaq, Unlike Kobe

NBA: Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles LakersWith Tracy “T-Mac” McGrady recently announcing his official retirement from the NBA, he has wasted no time in reflecting on the career he had that was filled with a lot of ups-and-downs. McGrady was one of the most talented players to ever step foot in the NBA, but because he battled multiple injuries during his prime, his career had to be cut shorter than he intended.

Regardless of the challenges that he faced throughout his career, T-Mac firmly believes that he was as good as Kobe Bryant (and perhaps even better) when he was at his best.

McGrady told FOX Sports Radio’s Jay Mohr Sports on Wednesday:

“Numbers don’t lie. I was in the conversation of being one of the best in the league. Whether I was better than Kobe, or he was better than me … I was in the conversation and it didn’t matter at the time. I was playing at a high level and was very confident when I was on the court.”

McGrady went on further to say that if he had played with Shaq during his prime, they would have won titles while getting along, unlike Kobe’s relationship with Shaq.

“We would have had a great run,” McGrady said about Shaq. “I don’t know how many but, I know it would have never ended like it did with he and Kobe. I have a great relationship with Shaq.”

Truthfully, we will never know how good McGrady could have been had he stayed healthy or been in the same position as Kobe since it’s all speculation. Shaq and Kobe may not have clicked off the court, but to an extent, that worked to their benefit because they meant business when the lights came on. Hence, earning three championships in five years.

What remains true is that McGrady and Kobe had such a respect for each other as competitors throughout their careers, and they’ll always appreciate the battles they had on the court against each other.

Tracy is full of it. He bailed out on Vince Carter and he would have done same to Shaq.

  • vdogg

get along? ok, maybe. but remember, shaq and kobe learned to co-exist on the court to the tune of 3 titles. people think those titles were all shaq. think again. in the tight games, it was kobe closing the deal when shaq had to play ‘hot potato’ with the ball for fear of going to the line. tmac was a great player, but i doubt he would have gotten 3 rings playing with shaq.

  • Daniel

Kobe was riddled with injuries too, the only difference was He played through them.

  • Jim213

Like KB24 stated with dumb Jimmy Kimmel who had no clue that Larry Bird played for the Celts, the challenge was laid down. Thus, KB24 had to prove he could do it on his on his own given both KB24/Shaq Alpha males. His words make believe that McGrady would’ve accepted/adapted to a Scottie Pippen type of role. (speculation?)

He has been saying it Now, but didn’t he promised and guaranteed Orlando and Houston Playoffs when he was with them. He was too lazy to workout then, not working to develop himself and his game and rely too much from his talent alone, often ending in the bench being injured & not reaching his potential.

Kobe was born with the DNA, with talent, but he knows it is not enough for what he envisions himself of what he could have had. So he worked his butt of, to get to where he is and not leaving any doubts of what “Ifs & buts” along his way. That is all “GREATNESS!”

      • Jim213

He’s proven to not being a franchise player given his injury prone career. Thus, his best shot to win rings would’ve been to play for a team as a 3rd or 4th contributing player.

That’s why it’s a waste of time comparing a T-Mac to a Kobe.Kobe was and still is a real superstar.Kobe had, and has, a drive like no other.Kobe wasn’t gonna stop doing Kobe for no mother….body.So we see where destiny took every party in this conversation.Kobe is still out here getting it while the getting is good like the homie T.S. said he should.

Kobe all the best, and may you have a fast and full recovery!
Holla at your boy Paytc sooner than later.

Yes, and while T-[mac and so many other bashers forced to retire since they can’t find a team to hire them, Kobe is cashing his $30M paycheck this year. Pity, just pure ENVY!

        • Paytc

Although it sounds that way,I think T-Mac is just fantasizing on what could have been, more so than he is envious? I just hope I’m not wrong about that?
When you are great for so long there is a lot of jealousy, envy, and hate.
I’m sure Kobe is use to dealing with all the love and hate. But he appears to deal with them both appropriately.

          • http://www.facebook.com/eddie.lazaro123 Eddie Lazaro

Well, maybe, but he said he could have work it out with Shaq, stayed together and and have more Ring? That’s crazy, Shaq was on his prime when he was with Penny in Orlando, but never was able to accomplish anything like the ones he got with Kobe.

Kobe pushed Shaq and bitch at him for not being fit and ready. Other than KOBE, no one has challenge Shaq since all he played during his prime are all second fiddlers who cares more about their paychecks more than anything else.

  • MonterrioJavi

Look at tmacs playoff numbers….he never showed up PERIOD….yeah he didn’t play with great teams but his performances in the playoffs were…he didn’t show up when it mattered…kobe did thus making him the better player and seperating the two

  • cabrillo24

T-Mac played with Yao Ming and couldn’t get out of the first round. STFU

  • ra

A great run? I don’t know how many he would have gotten — maybe 1? Then it would have been just a ‘good run’, and not a ‘great run’. And it would have ended much worse. Someone would have been traded because they didn’t have enough for more than one championship.

  • Redline Riders Atlanta

he needs to shut up… did you ever think that maybe shaq should have tried harder to get along with kobie. understand who was the future and it wasnt shaq . and last i cked kobie went on to win 2 more rings after shaq left…NOT TO BAD I SAY.

  • Real Live

I think a lot of yall are forgetting just how good T-Mac was in his prime. It only lasted for a few seasons because of injuries (Much more serious than a pinky or a toe) but when he was scoring 32 a game he was every bit as skilled as Kobe. Kobe is greater (rings and longevity) and has had a much better career, but skillwise…at one point they were very close to neck and neck.

    • Paul Sharpe

Yeah, and for 5 seconds I was the most brilliant person on the planet… A HOF career is not tiny fragments… It’s being excellent for an Extended period of time…

      • Paytc

Exactly ! It’s that large body of work that separates both Kareem and Kobe from the pack.Sure it’s easy to play at a high level for a few years, but try 2 decades.

    • Paytc

      Real Live,
Sure I can agree T-Mac had some madd skills ,but what separates good from great is the mental game.Kobe is far more determined and mentally tough than most. Not saying T-Mac didn’t have a few great years because he did.But a Kobe comes along far less than a T-Mac.We are talking about the whole package straight out of high school.Like the real Mike,Kobe is one of the “baddest”.Ever! Without a lot of speculation just a large body of work!

      • Paytc

Kobe played better defense than Tracy Mcgrady too.
There really is no comparison. Both played at a high level, but Kobe had a more complete game. And that mental edge over everyone.

  • Real Live

And also…Yao Ming is not the equivalent of Shaq lol

  • Real Live

I’m a Lakers and a Kobe fan btw

  • SpringBreakers

  • Paul Sharpe

Tracy is much like Vince Carter, over-rated scorers who do very little else… #6thmannotHOF

  • Flight_91

Tracy’s right…you Kobe Stans need to go check the numbers during that time…he was putting up crazy numbers around the time Shaq and Kobe were together..if you think the Lakers couldn’t have still won with Tmac as the 2nd option you’re delusional..Tracy could’ve gave the Lakers 25 to 30 and hit big shots when called up on..especially from 00-04…check his stats fore you act like its blasphemous and what he’s saying aint true

    • http://www.facebook.com/eddie.lazaro123 Eddie Lazaro

YEAH YEAH YEAH, IFS, BUTS, MAYBE, don’t go to the record list and history. All I know is that T mac was born with a natural talent, a great natural talent and as you said, he had shown it on his stats. But he is to lazy to develop himself Physically and Mentally, and that’s the reason why he is always injured and often times a bench warmer. He does not have the killer instinct and Intensity that Kobe has, that’s the very reason why every time he guaranteed his team going to the playoffs, he FAILED. Kobe has less natural & born talent than Tmac & most of the superstars that you may know, but he work his butt off to learn and elevate his game. He looks and seek for help to make his game better. T mac has played a lot less than Kobe, but where is he now or all the players that was drafted before Kobe was. Kobe stayed all these years in the game because HE DID NOT JUST RELY ON HIS NATURAL GIFT ALONE!, what ever his weaknesses were then, he work so hard to learn and push himself to make his game better, and work harder, much harder than anyone to stay where he is right now. The race always comes with a winner, but if you will compare Tmac to Kobe’s, IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE! NOT EVEN ON THE SAME BOOK, a LOT LESS ON THE SAME PAGE!

      • Flight_91

00-04 he was healthy tho..The topic was could Tmac play with Shaq while he was in his prime and The Lakers still win..and fact of the matter is 00-04 Tmac was A top 5 player in the game..so your rant on longevity is irrelevant..nobody said Tmac was better than Kobe..but if you say The Lakers with A healthy prime Tmac and shaq wouldn’t have won you’re out of your mind and you’d be showing that you’re A Kobe fan boy that worships him

        • http://www.facebook.com/eddie.lazaro123 Eddie Lazaro

That’s his problem. He relied TOO MUCH ON HIS NATURAL GIFT and became COMPLACENT. You are talking about stats, TOO MANY IFS AND BUTS! and Yes and your top player has proven what? At least we got something that was proven, 5RINGS to what have you? End of argument. Maybe you are the one’s ridding too much TMAC boy toy.
