Top 10 Los Angeles Lakers Free Agent Signings Since 1980

By | June 30, 2012|

The NBA’s most hectic and busy day is only days away, as 2012 free-agency is ready to get underway. Starting July 1, free agents will get the chance to remain with their current teams or decide to move on and join another franchise. This is also the time for front offices to speak with candidates and try to lure in new players.

The Los Angeles Lakers have done a great job acquiring players through the draft and trades, but they have had some amazing free-agency signings in years prior. The Lakers have the resources to lure in top names and they have made great moves in their history.

Here is our version of the Top 10 Los Angeles Lakers free agent signings since 1980.

10: Steve Blake

Steve Blake signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in the summer of 2010  and he was hoping to help the team win its third consecutive title. Blake was known for his three-point shooting and he was expected to improve the team from behind the arc. In fact, Blake was a major player in the Lakers’ season opener and he hit a big shot in the final minute.

Although Blake has not been able to win a championship with the Lakers, he has been a nice addition. Blake played a nice role in the 2012 post-season and he made a plethora of big shots.

9: Magic Johnson

Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s prime with the Lakers was during the mid-1980s, but he made a return to the team in 1996. Johnson signed with the Lakers during January of 1996 and played 32 games for the team. Johnson brought five titles to the Lakers and although he was no longer the player he once was, the franchise made the right choice by bringing him back.

Johnson needed basketball in his life and the Lakers gave him another chance to do that. He did not produce much for the team, but bringing one of the greatest Lakers back to do the team was a nice gesture by management.

You know, its kind of funny how people consider the Lakers a team that always “steals” other teams talent through free agency, yet Shaq is probably the only MAJOR signing.

Got some good players through trades though.

Sam Perkins in 1991 should be ahead of Blake & Magic’s 2nd term.

In what way has Steve Blake been a top ten signing other than the fact that he’s had a couple nice games with us. Karl Malone and Gary Payton playing decently and being ring hunters at the end of their careers did nothing for us other than lose us the 2004 finals when Malone was injured and Payton got torn apart by Chauncey Billups. This list would have been much more suitable as a top 5 where actual impact players made the list. And Magic being on there is a definite sentimental pick, which I can appreciate, but he was drafted by and only ever played as a Laker, so his “signing” is more of a technicality that anything.

I cannot believe you would have Steve Blake on here, not even a factor for the Lakers he chokes when they need him the most. Not even a top 100 player in his career yet alone a top 10 signing to one of the most successful franchises in NBA history.

1st of all….the guy writing this is like 14…look at his pic.  find another job dude.
2nd, this is a terrible list. Blake has done nothing….NOTHING! for the lakers.  so how could he be in the top 10.  i know with lists like this you cant please everyone.  i just cant imagine these 10 players are the best free agents the lakers have picked up since 80.
but people need to understand, which i noticed the King below didnt get it, its “free agent” signings. sure there has been much better players traded to the lakers.

You has to be kidding me put Steve Blake in top 10, is like you he is your buddy. He is over paid for his service, yes he has some nice game but majority is shadow compare to fisher.

Wow…Did anyone at Lakers Nation proofread this before posting it? This is so poorly written that I just had to skim through the names instead of actually reading it. The grammar in this article is so horrible. We may be sports fans, but we still would appreciate proper grammar when reading an article.

    • Nate

And what exactly is so horrible about it, oh great grammar scholar? Anything specific?
