Top 10 Los Angeles Lakers Free Agent Signings Since 1980

By | June 30, 2012|

6: Brian Shaw

Brian Shaw joined the Lakers in October of 1999 and went on to win three consecutive titles with the team. Just like Rambis, Shaw was never one to put up impressive stats. Instead, he was a reliable player on the perimeter and was always ready to knock down three-point shots.

Shaquille O’Neal always talks about role players and their importance to the team, constantly mentioning the contributions of Shaw. In this time with the Lakers, Shaw averaged four points per game, but for some reason he hit big shots when they were needed

5: Rick Fox

The Lakers signed Rick Fox in 1997 after spending several seasons with the Boston Celtics. Fox was known for his three-point shooting and tough play, something that intrigued the Lakers.

Fox played alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal and eventually won three title with the team. Championship teams need role players that can produce in important games, and Fox always did that. Kobe and Shaq could always rely on Fox to come up big and that three-peat may not have happened if Fox was never on the court.

You know, its kind of funny how people consider the Lakers a team that always “steals” other teams talent through free agency, yet Shaq is probably the only MAJOR signing.

Got some good players through trades though.

Sam Perkins in 1991 should be ahead of Blake & Magic’s 2nd term.

In what way has Steve Blake been a top ten signing other than the fact that he’s had a couple nice games with us. Karl Malone and Gary Payton playing decently and being ring hunters at the end of their careers did nothing for us other than lose us the 2004 finals when Malone was injured and Payton got torn apart by Chauncey Billups. This list would have been much more suitable as a top 5 where actual impact players made the list. And Magic being on there is a definite sentimental pick, which I can appreciate, but he was drafted by and only ever played as a Laker, so his “signing” is more of a technicality that anything.

I cannot believe you would have Steve Blake on here, not even a factor for the Lakers he chokes when they need him the most. Not even a top 100 player in his career yet alone a top 10 signing to one of the most successful franchises in NBA history.

1st of all….the guy writing this is like 14…look at his pic.  find another job dude.
2nd, this is a terrible list. Blake has done nothing….NOTHING! for the lakers.  so how could he be in the top 10.  i know with lists like this you cant please everyone.  i just cant imagine these 10 players are the best free agents the lakers have picked up since 80.
but people need to understand, which i noticed the King below didnt get it, its “free agent” signings. sure there has been much better players traded to the lakers.

You has to be kidding me put Steve Blake in top 10, is like you he is your buddy. He is over paid for his service, yes he has some nice game but majority is shadow compare to fisher.

Wow…Did anyone at Lakers Nation proofread this before posting it? This is so poorly written that I just had to skim through the names instead of actually reading it. The grammar in this article is so horrible. We may be sports fans, but we still would appreciate proper grammar when reading an article.

And what exactly is so horrible about it, oh great grammar scholar? Anything specific?
