During the post-game show following the Lakers’ victory against the Wizards, Norm Nixon said that 3-2 would be “acceptable”, but that the team should shoot for 4-1. I say, screw 4-1, I’m ready to see 5-0.
I’m tired of seeing this malaise during games as we even saw late in the game against the Wizards on Sunday night. Now that Drew is out, I expect to see the Lakers tighten up the screws and start playing like defending champions for 48 minutes.
Last year, Bynum had his second knee injury right as the pivotal six game road trip was kicking off and the team ended up going 6-0 – a trip that ultimately solidified their confidence all the way through the Finals. The schedule on this trip is definitely not as challenging so I expect nothing less than perfection.
Now, obviously this is the ultra critical fan in me talking. The more reserved and understanding side of me does realize that for this year’s team, that championship hunger we saw last season has been questionable and even lacking at times during this season. Most fans and even the Lakers players have lent the complacency to the fact that we are all “looking ahead” (again, cardinal sin) to the playoffs. If that is an excuse that we are going to bring up at all, we have no business expecting to repeat as champions – not with King James salivating at a chance to play the Lakers in the Finals.
So, let’s see if we can’t extend the current winning streak to 11. Time to rock the road.
