Steve Nash Will Wear No. 10 with Los Angeles Lakers

Once the Los Angeles Lakers made the sign-and-trade to acquire two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, the debate began about which number would be on the front and back of his new jersey. With Wilt Chamberlain’s No. 13 long since retired, Nash had to make a decision on a new number and it appears that decision has been made.

According to Kevin Ding of OCRegister.com, Nash will be wearing No. 10:

“Nash has decided he will wear No. 10 in purple and gold for the coming season.”

Arguably the best player on the Lakers ever to wear the No. 10 is Norm Nixon. With the Lakers having no intention of retiring Nixon’s number, at least for the time being, Nash decided to go with it.

Being an avid soccer fan may have led Nash’s decision to choose No. 10. That number is usually worn by the best player on the international level like big-name players Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho.

Other players in Los Angeles that have worn a No. 10 jersey for the Lakers are Corky Calhoun, Larry Drew, Trey Johnson, Vladimir Radmanovic, Lindsey Hunter and Tyronn Lue. Obviously, none other the players mentioned were considered to be one of the few retired in the rafters at the Staples Center.

I like it…. now where can I get a Nash jersey

Ryan David Beckham never wore #10. Number #10 is usually given to the best player which usually happens to be a PLAYMAKER! They usually play behind the forwards like a point guard, can unlock the defence with an incisive pass or through running and dribbling at the defence. That is what a TRUE number 10 does in soccer. GO LAKERS!

Actually, Beckham wore #10 for 1 season at Manchester United before switching to #7 which he also wore for England

      • atd

True dat.  Beckham’s old club, Man U, is one of the few places where #10 is NOT the most storied shirt.  George Best, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo — all wore #7 for the Red Devils.

Being an avid soccer fan, he went with the number 10 because it is usually reserved for the midfielder//best distributor on the pitch, not necessarily the “best player”–the player that distributes, facilitates, and has (most of the time) a free pass to be all over the field…which is pretty much what Nash’s game is like. That being said: Lakers 2012-2013 NBA CHAMPS!!!!

(Hoping real hard that we can get Dwight Howard within the next few days…Dynasty–Until Kobe retires in 3-4 years at least)

Mr. Lionel Messi, #10. Best play maker for his designated sport. I know Steve can do the same for LA.
