Sources: Dwight Howard Ready to Sign Long Term With Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers were always interested in Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard and he has been their main target for quite some time. Howard is considered the best center in the NBA and the Lakers understand just how much better they would get by landing him. However, the front office has been reluctant to finalize the deal due to Howard’s decision to not sign a long-term extension with Los Angeles.

At first Howard said he would only agree to an extension with the Brooklyn Nets, but it appears as though he has changed his mind. After spending time in Los Angeles and getting a feel of the city and the Lakers, Howard has changed his stance. According to sources, Howard is now willing to stay long-term with the Lakers.

The Lakers are reportedly ready to make the trade, but first need assurance from Howard that he will commit to the team long-term. Sources say Howard is “excited” about the opportunity to play for the Lakers and will re-sign with the team when his contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 season.

This is perfect news for the Lakers as this was the biggest roadblock preventing this trade from happening. Los Angeles did not want to “rent” Howard for one season and at the same time give away their young center in Andrew Bynum. However, it seems as though their meeting with Howard went extremely well and it convinced him to commit to the franchise.

The next concern is the status of Howard’s back. He had surgery this summer and potential trading partners have been weary of pulling the trigger because of it. Still, it appears as though the Lakers were more worried about the long-term extension and if the reports are correct, Howard could be a Laker very soon.

    I still think, Andrew Bynum is a better fit for the Lakers. Howard’s back injury is still a liability.

        They both suck actually. I never saw a Dwight Howard with his head on the game. He always have a smirk on his face, and is like saying “hey, watch me I’m so good”-attitude.

         bynum doesnt suck, hes a more talented player than dwight, just not as athletic. each palyer offers things the other cannot do.bynum will continue to get better while dwight has probably peaked. tbh bynum is the better option when it comes to playing miami. dwight is better for the pick and roll game with nash. also a bad back is far more serious than knee issues, all players that large have knee issues but there is no real great treatment for an f’ed up back

    Here is what I have a problem with:  Howard says that he promised to sign an extension AT THE END OF THE SEASON WHEN HIS DEAL EXPIRES.  That would not give me any comfort because a lot can happen from November to May.  Then suddenly Howard changes his mind and the Lake show are left without a pot to piss in.  I say have him sign the extension once he arrives in LA.

    excited for this trade, but it does suck to give up Bynum, only bandwagons would have a hard time understanding why giving up Bynum is a bad idea and if Bynum has issues with his attitude, then think twice because the Lakers are about to sign “The Drama Queen”…I’d take a cocky attitude over “The Drama Queen” of the NBA

    Let’s not be so quick to judge and say “oh dwight wants to come now” the story changes everyday because pf “reports” not because of what he pr his agent is saying. I get it, I’m a laker fan too but. You have to taeke all these “reports” and “sources” with a grain of salt because often times its either made up or not credible.

    The media has a lot of power and and influeence and the platform to manipulate a lot of things. So before we say dwight can’t make up his mind, ask yourself who is actually saying he wants to stay or go or re sign. I’ve only heeard him or his agent talk a few times. The rest have been “reports” from “sources” just because its on espn does not make it credible. Remeber the number one job of a sportscaster, writer, bloggr or whatever is to report or make a story, it doesn’t always have to be factual but that’s their job. So remember that when reading these stories

    What are you people so excited from? I’m a Lakers fan but no deal will happen if Bynum agrees on an extension with the Rockets. Remember this is a three team deal. If Bynum agrees with an extension with the Rockets then Howard can sign with the Lakers.
