First, there was the December 4, 2007 game at Minnesota, when Kobe scored 20 points on 6 of 12 shooting over a mere 29 minutes in a Laker win, despite fighting flu-like symptoms.
Then, there was the win at Quicken Loans Arena last season, the last game of a tough 6-game road trip coming on the heels of an embarrassing loss to the Bobcats (you know, where Vladimir Radmanovic was sent into exile) at Staples Center. Despite playing sick, and needing intravenous fluids at halftime, Kobe still put up 19 points on a respectable 8 of 17 field goal attempts. Although Lamar Odom was the star of the Lakers team that game, it’s nice to have a guy who can get you at least 19 points when playing under the weather! In the next game, Kobe had bounced back, and dropped 34 points on the Oklahoma City Thunder at Staples Center on 13 of 26 shooting.
Another notable effort came in the Western Conference Semifinals opener against the Houston Rockets. Although the Rockets, always a terrific match-up against the Lakers, seized the victory at Staples Center, Kobe did not simply lie down and take it. Fighting a sore throat, Kobe nevertheless scored 32 points on 14 of 31 shooting, and indeed scored 22 of the Lakers’ last 42 points in an effort to shoot them out of the
morass. In the next game, looking to restore momentum to set the Lakers up to recapture home court advantage, Kobe went nuts, shooting 16 for 27 for 40 points, all while playing almost 4 fewer minutes than in the opener.
