The deadline to acquire Andrew Bynum via trade and then waive him is rapidly approaching. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers have until Jan. 7 before his current deal becomes guaranteed for Bynum.

Reports have surfaced over the last few days that if the Lakers land Bynum in a trade for Pau Gasol, they will waive him in an effort to save $20 million.

Apparently, the deal on the table hit a snag on Thursday, but fellow center Roy Hibbert said he had the inside scoop on Bynum’s desired destinations a few days earlier. Hibbert tweeted the following on New Year’s Eve:

It remains uncertain how the situation with Gasol and Bynum will pan out. Obviously, Bynum wants Jan. 7 to come and go in order to cash in, but the Lakers appear anxious to get a deal done.

As usual, around this time in the season, Gasol’s name is out there with plenty of trade rumors and speculation swirling around about his future in the NBA. Hibbert may simply be joking around, and is likely doing just that, but Bynum landing with the Clippers or Heat is intriguing.

With Bynum rubbing teams the wrong way throughout his entire career in the league, it would come as no surprise that Cavs won’t listen to any desired destinations from the troubled center.
