We all remember the Melee in Detroit when Artest ran his crazy ass into the stands, swinging punches towards anyone in arm’s reach with no real idea what he was doing. That was the moment when all of us thought: “That dude is crazy.”
Ron Ron needs to fall back on that craziness right now. It’s been long enough that most of us have forgiven him for losing his head and inexplicably challenging an entire NBA arena to a fight. None of us, however, will ever forget about it. Any time we see a hint of Crazy in Ron Ron’s eye, we instantly flash back to the Malice at the Palace. (By the way, the only dude in that riot who was crazier than Ron Artest was Stephen Jackson. Don’t believe me, watch the tape.)
Artest is a special breed, and it’s time for the Lakers to exploit that. I’m going to be honest with you, Ron Ron has been trying so hard to fit in with the Lakers this season that he forgot about what the team needs most: a lock down defender with a twinkle of crazy in his eye.
Recent news reports have journalists waxing nostalgic about Trevor Ariza and how well he fit into the Lakers system last season. Sure Trevor was great, but let’s not forget about the weapon we have in our arsenal right now. If Ron Artest can harness his inner crazy and channel that fury in a way that scares the pants off his opponents, then he will be remembered in Lakers lore and walk away with his first NBA Championship ring.
Be afraid, NBA small forwards. Be very afraid.
