Phil Jackson Says He Won’t Return To Lakers; Not A Championship Team

After the loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Lakers fell four games below .500 and are currently on a three-game losing streak heading into Thursday’s showdown with the red-hot New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

On Wednesday night, TMZ caught up with former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson heading to dinner with longtime girlfriend Jeanie Buss in Venice, California. Jackson was asked if he’d return to the Lakers if asked.

The 11-time NBA champion immediately shot down the idea of returning to the Lakers and made a comment that he doesn’t believe the team is championship-caliber via TMZ.com:

Phil Jackson says he doesn’t want to return to the Lakers organization … even if they ask him … and to make things worse, Phil told TMZ he doesn’t think the squad is championship material either.

With the Lakers sitting at 9-13 and nowhere near the team that was intended in terms of being a legitimate NBA title contender, the Lakers’ front office appears ready to make a few moves before the return of two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash. The glaring weakness in the backcourt continues to be problem for the Lakers for many different reasons with a lack of speed, leadership and inability to run Mike D’Antoni’s offense at the point guard position.

The Lakers are considering free-agent options at point guard with Delonte West reportedly at the top of the list. Obviously, there’s no player available that can replace Nash in this style of offense, but a player is needed to shoulder the load in the backcourt moving forward.

of course he wouldnt want to come to LA, after the way they mistreated one of the best coach’s of all time!? This Lakers organization is driving themselves off of a cliff and Jim Buss is the one driving.

  • Prince

Team is still the same he was willing to coach, just some bad blood on the organization

    • Dirtyhurts

I think Phil is looking at them as a whole… I think he’s right they don’t have the proper coaching staff to make them a championship team… and Jim Buss is directly responsible for that

  • Crystal

I don’t blame him. The way the Lakers organization treated Phil was not cool. Screw you Jim Buss.

Lakers need to shake their roster, their to old for young team can’t run transition defense… stop signing veteran players, now a days basketball is not old school anymore.

Did the TMZ really had to ask that question? He probably got infuriated by the question.
After Lakers Organization ridiculing him, how could he return back (one possibility could have been Jeanie request). I am happy with Phil’s comment and desicion. Lakers Organization deserves it.

Can’t win them all but I guess you sure as hell can lose a $hit load of games.

y’all r a bunch of morons… y would phil talk crap about jeanie buss’s team??? he just said those words to get stupid fans like most of u to stop saying “we want phil” every games the lakers lose like they were supposed to b an unbeatable team RIGHT AFTER they hired Mike d’antoni… i cant believe how many ppl believe everything that goes out a person’s mouth.. why would he not coach them if he accepted the same position with KWAME BROWN, SMUSH PARKER, CHRIS MIHM, and LUKE WALTON as their best players after kobe and odom… i understand that “treatment” thing u guys r talking about but it’s not like phil was on his knees begging for the job. he retired and the lakers wanted to know if he was interested

If Phil dont want to coach Lakers again why dont pick Brian Shaw? and why dont the lakers change their defense?

its time for the Lakers to trade MWP and Gasol. get Kevin Love and a back up point guard.

This Lakers team sucks overall. I love Kobe and LAL but I’m not blind. I know they’re not athletic and fast. MWP is a liability but he’s playing well this season. Pau Gasol is a liability too. I say let him go and trade him to Thunder and get Perkins and Kevin Martin. Remember how intense Perkins is that he just contaminates the entire team? Let Kevin Martin backup Kobe.

In the first place I was never in favor of Nash being with the Lakers. He’s not physical. Players like Westbrook will always harass him defensively. Nash can’t defend as well. Jason Kidd is still better, offesively and defensively. Also, fire Mike D’Antoni. Hire Jerry Sloan, all around coach and playoff experience. Or Brian Shaw.

Jim Buss admits to knowing nothing about basketball. He’s the one who needs to go.
