Pau Gasol States Desire to Remain with Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol has openly stated his desire to remain with the Lakers after being the focus of trade rumors over the weekend.

Rumor has it the Lakers were in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves for a deal that would send Gasol to Minnesota in exchange for Kevin Love and a top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.

However, a recent interview with an overseas source states that Gasol declared he wants to remain with Los Angeles for “as many years as I can.”

“My desire is to stay with the Lakers. I don’t have control over it but I want to stay with the Lakers for as many years as I can to be able to remain eligible for the maximum possible championships,” Gasol told reporters.

Minnesota was interested in adding Gasol after finally agreeing to a deal to bring his former Spanish teammate Ricky Rubio to the NBA.

Such a hard question for a fan… I love Pau.. i feel like his chemistry with this team cannot be replaced. Considering we couldn’t win until we picked Pau up!

How do we know Pau won’t have another major meltdown AGAIN???!!!

i think the lakers should focus on a point gaurd more than a forward. Pau just needs to change his game mentally thats it and Odom as a back up cant get better. but the point gaurd we need someone to knock em down from the perimeter

    • Foxco2067

Finally….someone who gets it….and has the right idea!

      • KOBEBRYNT24

You gotta learn towards keeping gasol, although lakers do need a pg.  It would be nice to pick Chris Paul, but there are no gaurantees.  He might bolt for NYC.  You couldn’t pass up Bynum for Howard.  Lakers also could use a quality shooter from the perimeter to stretch the defenes and make teams pay when they double kobe. Much like Jason Terry does when Dirk is doubled.

Kobe, has NEVER given such a heartless performance as Pau Gasol exhibited… THE ENTIRE YEAR. Constantly compaining about fatigue and how “they take the other teams best shot.” He finished the season heartless and Tired…. and get this… He want to play for spain this summer!.. SHip is Soft Lanky, no Defense playing tail up outta here. FAST

Pau & Bynum should stay a Laker, also Kobe is our #1 player.  We need him.  He is a great player.  Lakers need a better playing bench.  No one seems to come in and take over except Lamar.  Cut
the trade talk with our star players!  Go Lakers!!

You can’t trade a proven player like gasol. Trade bynum for dwight howard. Imagen dwight in the post 20 and 10 all day long and gasol on top of the key shooting 15 foot jumpers all day long and kobie doing his thing. Bynum will never give u numbers like dwight does.

    • Irodgers75

That’s so true, accept superman will put up 20 15

    • Foxco2067

Why r so many of my fellow lakers fans so eager to trade bynum for Howard???? The problem with the kameez isn’t at the center position….its in the backcourt…..does anyone think that with Howard the Lakers wouldn’t have faltered? 4 seasons worth of games in 3 seasons + an aging back court + no bench support killed them….not Bynum….keep Bynum….this will be his break out year….

    • poloman77

gasol proved that he can collapse big time when he is needed most.  Imagine Bynum getting all of Pau’s touches.  He would put up huge numbers.

If Pau is traded, LA must replace him with someone who is strong on both sides of the ball.  Without him, the team loses over 15 points per game at least.  Love cannot score as many points because he’s mainly a rebounding machine.  The trade must involve some sort of compensation from an offensive perspective as well.  Perhaps, MN can give Love and the 2nd pick overall for Pau and Artest.  LO should stay to keep the bench stable and for scoring purposes, since Pau will be gone.  The 2nd pick acquired through MN can either be used to draft a PG (Kemba Walker or Brandon Knight) or in a trade for CP3.

After the trade, the Lakers would have the following starting lineup for the next season:

    PG – CP3 or Kemba Walker/Brandon Knight
    SG – Kobe Bryant
    SF – Lamar Odom
    PF – Kevin Love
    C – Andrew Bynum

Now, if LA does not trade Pau, then the Buss family should sacrifice failed project in Bynum and trade him while he is still walking on two feet to Orlando for Howard.  LA would send Bynum, Artest and 2 second round picks.  The Lakers have 4 second round picks this year.  Orlando will then send Dwight Howard plus a player.  As for the needed PG position, LA should acquire Delonte West, who is a unrestricted free agent and familiar with coach Mike Brown from their days in Cleveland.  West could run Brown’s offense.  The remaining 2 second round picks can be used to draft a young reserve.  They might find another Marc Gasol in the second round, if they’re lucky.

After the trade, the Lakers starting lineup would look like the following:

    PG – Delonte West
    SG – Kobe Bryant
    SF – Lamar Odom
    PF – Pau Gasol
    C – Dwight Howard

In my opinion, I really like the second option for two reasons.  First, with Dwight Howard, the team vastly improves their interior defense with a more healthy and athletic center, who is a proven All-star.  Second, the Lakers have a balanced starting five, who can score and defend.  Of course, this lineup will only work, if the PG can facilitate the offense and LA’s bench plays beyond expectations on a consistent basis.  I see the Lakers as a version of San Antonio when David Robinson and Tim Duncan were playing together.

Speaking of the bench, they have to perform much better than last year in order for LA to return to the Western Conference Finals.

The bench would appear as the following:

PG – Derek Fisher, Steve Blake
SG – Shannon Brown (assuming he returns)
    SF – Matt Barnes, Ebanks
    PF – Derek Caracter
    C – Free agent (unknown)

Unfortunately, the people posting on this blog are not part of the Lakers organization, so we could only wait patiently and cross our fingers.

Jim Buss, please bring Dwight Howard to LA.  The tradition of big time centers must continue…..

    • Dark Knight

Can’t keep Shannon Brown either. He’s too inconsistent and he forces the shots. Pau really needs to go whether we get Howard or not. We need a good point guard to replace D Fish (no offense DF and I’m a big fan) as he’s really getting to that point of retiring. Matt B and Ebanks will still grow into the Lakers offense. Derek Caracter also still has hope. Bynum could still be good as long as he stay healthy. Kobe  and Lamar…well, they are still the face of the Lakers.

He sounds like he’s asking for his girlfriend to keep him and not dump him. If you want your girlfriend to keep you then you gotta show her how much you care. You just didn’t do that during this season. I’m talking about the Lakers this time. You (Pau) just didn’t bring it. Sorry dude but you have to go. The Lakers is about being the best and you are just not one of them. You want to be a true center? Get some pointers from Dirk N!

  • Melaniezied

It makes me sick to even think that there is a possibility that Pau wouldn’t be a Laker next year. I don’t even know what to do with that!!! I hope to God that they realize that there problem is the bench and point guard position………THATS IT!

  • Anonymous

Lakers need athleticism not Kevin Love. Artest and Fisher are the two biggest issues on the Lakers currently, both great players but are too slow to both be on a court at the same time with two 7 footers.

  • Jheherbee

I think we should give Pau another chance. The Lakers got 2 championships because of him. Let’s not forget what he has done for the Lakers

So many people are sleeping on Ebanks. The kid is gonna be a contributor. He was working in that direction before his late season injury. He’s hungry, young and athletic. He will be coming off the bench much more than Phil Jackson would have allowed.
Frankly, I don’t like Steve Nash. But, if he wants to win a ring, he and the Lakers should consider the thought. He’s a proven point guard. He can shoot the 3, is outstanding and clever with the pick-and-roll and can create his own shot, as well as, create for his teammates ( presently, only Kobe can do all that). He’d be a short-term solution for the PG position. Just what the Lakers need ( salary cap). Kobe’s got 3 years left… and that is probably all Steve has left. The idea is cheaper than acquiring Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Steve is not liked by most Lakers fans, including me. But, if you keep the team as is and acquire him, the Lakers would win 2 more rings without trading for Dwight Howard. Then, of course, 2014, we could then get LeBron and all would be well in Lakerland. I don’t know why the Lakers won’t pay me my consulting fee…

Pau is a great player.  We win as a team and lose as a team.  Everybody failed in the playoffs. From the coaches to all the players, not just one player.  DFish days are over.  Kobe needs a running mate that can consistently score from the outside.  If the lakers get a really good point guard that can shoot consistently from the perimeter and the bench plays up to par, Kobe and Co. well get their 6th ring.  We need a point guard.

Please trade Pau for Kevin Love! Bench or trade Derrick Fisher and get a young and athletic point guard via trade or draft. Their is know room for second chances when your trying to when championships in the NBA. To many teams our improving.
