Pau Gasol: Hoping To Continue To ‘Develop Chemistry’ With Kaman

Lakers’ 90-88 victory over the Denver Nuggets tonight was the impressive play of Pau Gasol and Chris Kaman together. Coach D’Antoni decided to start the two bigs and they showed great chemistry as they continually found each other for easy baskets. It is still unclear who will start next to Gasol when the regular season starts, but Gasol spoke to Time Warner Cable SportsNet after the game about how well he and Kaman mesh on the court:

We’ve been playing well in practice and I think that’s why Mike tried it today and hopefully we’ll continue to get minutes together to continue to develop that chemistry and show that we can be effective together.

The basketball IQ and passing ability of both men was on full display in this game as they made some great passes from the high post. With each man adept at handling the ball, passing, and seeing the court, it makes for a very effective pairing, especially when you add Steve Nash to the equation as well.

“Pau is so easy to play with because he’s so willing to pass, and if he needs to, he can score, too,” said Kaman on Pau. “I think he’s kind of an underrated scorer a little bit. I just think he makes everybody else around him better and it makes all of our jobs easier.”

The Lakers still have some time to figure out their front court rotation, but if they can continue to improve and play off one another this well, it would undoubtedly benefit the Lakers to have the two seven-footers share the court as much as possible. ———————————————————————————-

It is pretty easy to get excited when things go well, but this is still preseason… so all things must be taken with a grain of salt. It’s nice though, for boosting team spirit.

Bromance… the advantage will be when the coach decides to go big to get an advantage over the opponents. Both showed the ability to play team ball together.

What I wanted to know is were there improvement to the defensive execution? Was there improve communication? Obviously, they have energy. I will watch the replay tomorrow an wlll look for progress.

kaman is a great defender. he and pau use their size and strength to make a moving wall. they shut down the driving lanes

Got out rebounded again though thanks to players like J Hill 10+ rebounds and others they managed to pull out a win.

      • Gregory Choa

Yeah, without a true blue chip SF to go up against the likes of Lebron, KD, ‘Melo, Paul George, etc., the Lakers are at a disadvantage at that position, and the rebounding suffers there. I’m not sold on Nick Young starting at the 3…just not big enough, and Wes Johnson isn’t wowing me there either…
I almost think Kobe is our best bet at that position. I mean, who else is there? Elias Harris?? Can you sell Shawne Williams as a 3??? This is where I’m sad we haven’t gotten a look at Ryan Kelly yet…could he be that guy???

        • Jim213

Agree, S Williams did play at the 3 yesterday if I observed the set up correctly. He did good but like you mentioned, not certain if they have a solid player to go up against premiere SF’s to help on the defensive end.

Tough task for a player who may require more experience to be placed at the 3. I have E Harris making the final cut. He’ll be a good player once he gets more experience within the league. Ryan Kelly hasn’t played yet but if the team goes with a 15 man roster this season he may end up getting the final spot.

However, it’d be more so as a potential prospect though I’d give him time in the D league if he was signed and given an NBA contract/pay.

Even though he gave up a lot on the offensive end, we’ve had MWP at that spot in the past and you sorta take for granted what he brought to the table defensively…and, yes, we can agree that I don’t think we have that person in the mix right now, unless you can re-imagine Kobe in that position. As it is, it’s kinda scary to think that Elias Harris is otherwise our best bet at the 3, with all due respect to the rookie…

Given the newlly posted article looks like the coach intends on giving KB24 lots of play time at the 3.

So far, base on play-by-play at espn… of the four… Landry, Harris, Williams, Henry…. only Landry’s game has not translated well into the court. Harris is a bully and a banger and has been decent, Henry and Williams are way ahead of the four.

    • cj

thats because landrys shot is slow. he is chuking the ball not shooting it he is baing at paced

      • Jim213

From watching the games I’m noticing a lack of confidence from Landry. If so it’s likely translating to his shooting.

        • cj

i agree but i believe its because of the speed of the defenders effecting his shooting. the d is making him rush shots

Pau and Kaman are both good pass first big men and both under appreciated. They will be crucial this season in the Pick n Roll, Pick n Pop, inside passing, etc. since both are good mid range shooter. Each can handle the paint by themselves or together, & with the chemistry they’ve been showing so far, it will be fun season to watch them play. The cohesion and timing is in progress, and the team defense showing a lot to like. It is just a matter of time until they really get comfortable working with the system and each other. The #Vino is back in town and will be watching them on the bench to put his 2cents for now. All his interviews are pointing good things to like & I like the idea of him having the knee treatment while recovering on his Achilles surgery.. Let Go All the Way, Lakers! .

I watched the game last night and Pau and Kaman played exceptionally great together. I believe they should keep that starting line up they had last night and when Kobe comes back put Meeks back on the bench. Steve Nash played better last night as well. You might as well ink Xavier Henry on the team, He has played lights out the first three games. Can’t wait till Kobe comes back. Starting 5 of Nash, Kobe, Young, kaman and Pau will be something to wreckon with!!!! You can really see and feel that the team has true chemistry. It’s going to be a great season, What I’ve seen the first three games, the Lakers are hungry and have something to prove. I’m going to take it a step further, who says we can’t win a CHAMPIONSHIP this year. People are really really underestimating us..#letsgolakers!!!!!!!

    • cj

i dont think kobe and young should start together. young should be our 6th man

  • swagmeister

It’s too early to tell how this team will mesh because its preseason. But for sure, this team will be entertaining to say the least.
