New Lakers Point Guard Steve Nash Releases Statement

By | July 4, 2012|

After being traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Los Angeles Lakers, Steve Nash released a statement to the fans of Phoenix. The Lakers and the Suns have been divisional rivals for many years, so for Nash to leave for Los Angeles was a bit surprising – for both fans in Phoenix as well as Los Angeles. Still, Nash’s time in Phoenix will certainly never be forgotten, and he will go down in history as possibly the best player to ever wear the Suns uniform.

Nash didn’t want to leave the fans in Phoenix with a sour taste, so he released a statement for the fans of Phoenix to explain his decision-making process.

For the last 8 seasons I’ve been blessed to play for a team and a city that has embraced me and that I have come to call home. This is a tough business and the only thing constant in life is change.

After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we’ve agreed that it’s time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with L.A. because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family.

They were very apprehensive and didn’t want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.

I couldn’t be more grateful to the organization and Robert in particular. I know how hard this was for him and that fact that he was able to help me and my family in this way … it means a lot and says a lot about his character. I will never forget this gesture. Above and beyond.

The Phoenix Suns are an amazing organization and fans should be excited about their future. I hope the Suns win a championship some day soon for all the amazing fans and wonderful people in the organization.

good for the team. hope stern wont veto again. but never trade gasol he’s worthy than bynum, it would better to trade bynum for another pick like dwight howard. this team will make it to the finals next season

    • Bosslady949

David stern cant veto the trade, becuase David stern/ The nba does not own the suns. That is why he was able to do it then with tthe CP3 trade.

lol.  heat aint scared.  i’m scared that this makes the lakers worse.  defensively, nash checked out years ago and thats one of the problems with the lakers….the point guard position.  nash is better offensively, but he is still a defensive liability.

      • Sohi916

That’s true man but if we see a lakers heat finals this year, charmers shouldn’t be to hard for him to handle, the problem would be with Westbrook, but we could do what we have done before and have Kobe guard him like he did when we still had fish…..

Who’s old ??? Numbers doesn’t tell of Steve Nash !! Have you seen this guy run and his work ethics on the court ?? Does anybody know Gortat ??? Helloooo !!! GORTAT !!! Yes !!! Nothing against Gortat but this dude became a good player because of Nash !  Imagine what he can do with Bynum (if he doesn’t get trade) and with Pau ?   Defense wise ??? You guys thinking too much on how to stop Westbrook and Parker.  This a a team game !! Nobody can stop this dudes 1 on 1 !! And btw…..we still have the black mamba !!! Can’t wait for the season opener !

  • NinerLakerDynasty1

Next on the Laker radar.  Dwight Howard.  Kobe/Nash/Howard > the Big Dorks in Miami

  • http://www.facebook.com/AnthonyMusiQ Mark Anthony Guerrero

De Lano Mckay Parker is a fucken Idiot… I’m just saying.. wow… “We got rid of a 38 year old Derek fisher for a 38 year old Nash”… in my eyes… that’s a hell of an upgrade… I love Fishy but come on… 2 time MVP Nash compared to Fish…  thumbs up…

  • Krazed1979

steve nash is old but he is one of the better players in the league at his position everybody talk about speed but how bout the endurance that he has n how the younger players don’t have the stamina to keep up with him. He has always been a great n will continue to be but now we need to offer sessions a better contract he definitely can fit the offense he has proven that.

Very professional, and honest. Great team player honered he’s a Laker. Class act,for a class act organization

  • kobe24

yes nash is old but by looking unto his stats his averaging what? 13 ppg and 9+apg? we don’t want steve to score right? we just need to him to give a play and by that the lakers will have a tremendous offensives game. we just want him to facilitate. So the starting five will nash, kobe,MWP,gasol, bynum. well the lakers still the best from the west and a championship caliber.

    GOOD LUCK LAKERS

  • Ongsantiago

yeah time is now,our goal are championship titles,it can be done within this next five years, kobe need more help, steve is a big plus, maybe one more trade and free agent signings will do it..

    Do i see the 17th ring coming in….OK NOT 1 NOT 2 NOT 3 NOT 4 NOT 5 NOT 6 NOT 7 BUT EVEN MORE!!! :D

  • Dominic C

Relax guys. We’ve got what we needed. Stop right there. We now can do it with Steeve Nash. He maybe 38 yrs old but a two time MVP, a three point shooter, 90+ % free throw shooter? Keep every body now. Don’t trade anyone of the bigs. Kobe and Nash will give us the championship. Welcome to L.A. Mr. Nash. I hated you before cause you gave the Lakers headaches but now help the Lakers win it all. Happy days are here again. It’s Showtime soon.

  • jay armstead

We are honored to have you Steve! I disliked the trouble you gave us in the past but now you will cause trouble for us. Excited for the season to start. Stay healthy and play strong…Purp and Yellow strong :)

  • Jsgm2431

Good move for the Lakers… Yeah, NASH is already old, but at his age, he is still considered one of the best PG in the league and still average double-double in scoring and assists… This will upgrade their PG position… Imagine, Nash at the point, KOBE at SG, Pau and Bynum on the middle, and GRANT HILL (if he sign with the Lakers) in SF.. Who will they defend? Then, they add BRANDON RUSH, RLEWIS and A. JAMISON… Then give decent playing time to Goudelock and Draft pick Johnson-Odom who are shooters from the arc… LAKERS will be contenders again… GO Lakers…

  • Nrob224

IT’s Not about SPEED or YOUTH it’s the KNOWLEDGE of HOW to play !!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Heavy68 Larry Brooks

Thank You for our point guard!!!

  • Pdogg_28

We are back Baby !!! Nash will keep the floor open, and can take the led at times…Great Move

  • ahg123

lakers should trade pau and metta to 76ers for iggy and jrue holiday and maybe a draft pick.

  • Canadian

Kobe’s window of lifting the Lakers to a championship
is closing and this gives him a legit shot at it again. Yes Steve is old but he
has the ability to work with players like Bynum or Gasol and create very easy
finishes for them. He will make both of them better – Yes he is old – is not
able to finish great athletic moves or throw downs (who needs to dunk when you
can shoot like Steve). So if you are trying to compare Steve to any of these
new young PG’s (the Westbrook’s, Paul’s, and Rondos of the game) you are right
    - Steve Nash is old. Yes Westbrook and Paul may score more – Rondo may get as
many assists per game but none of them will be close in assists per 48 minutes
played or close to 50-40-90 from the floor. You are not getting a young
exciting athletic PG here – only a wise leader that see’s the court as well as
anyone ever, passes better than most, makes many average players look good,
takes quality shots, is an outstanding team-mate, mentors younger players, is
an asset to his community, makes the game fun to watch and many positives to
out-way his weakness as a one-on-one defender. He’s not as quick, is undersized
against many guards and has no big time hops, if hops at all. With all the
missed slams this past season that I watched – I think I will put my money on a
Steve Nash jump shot. Tough for me to see Steve go to the Lakers as I am more
of a Celtics fan/Steve Nash fan – but I do want Steve to get a ring. Good luck
to your Lakers – Laker Nation = Since Steve can’t adorn Lakers #13 = Hoping he
wears  #7 (his Team Canada number) or #11
    (his Santa Clara number).

     For those who
don’t know Lakers #13 was one of the greatest most dominant sports figures of
    all time - “WILT”  (7’1″ – 275) playing hoops in the 60′s and 70′s. (Dwight Howard is 6’11″ – 265).

    KOBE + NASH + GASOL + BYNUM = 3 PEAT NBA CHAMPIONSHIP (2013, 2014 & 2015)

  • Mullover

Steve Nash continues to show us his class, intelligence and passion for the game we love. Much thanks, Steve. Can’t wait to see you on the break with kobe and howard and gasol. Have a great time in LA. We’ll have so much fun watching.
