Heart & Soul
Being a superstar isn’t about making the most shots, having the most finesse, or having the biggest contract. It’s about not being afraid to take the shot with the game on the line; and accepting the consequences of a failed attempt. Willing to make a pass on a big play to a teammate who has an easier opportunity to score. They are the heart and soul because what they provide cannot be measured on a stat sheet.
Coach Phil Jackson said best: ”It’s character. We’ve always said the character has got to be in players if they are going to be great players. You just can’t draft it.”
Fisher and Odom are, in a sense, the blue-collar superstars. They may not attract the media or NBA fans as much as Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol are able to gross with their talents. But they are just as valuable.
The heart and soul of the Lakers, subconsciously working at a tandem to keep their teammates on the right path. With Fisher’s leadership and Odom’s selflessness, the vision of a repeat has a chance to come to fruition.
