NBA Rumors: LeBron James’ Free Agency Decision ‘Truly Up In The Air’

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

LeBron James again is the biggest target in free agency, but with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh both opting out of their contracts, it will allow the Miami Heat the cap room to add more help. As a result, most feel James will remain in Miami.

However, that may not be the case as Fox Sports’ Sam Amico reports that James’ decision is still up in the air:

Distancing himself from Heat management is something of a vague statement. It could mean something as little as not talking to Pat Riley as often as he used to. But if the decision is in the air, the Lakers will have a chance, and they are sure to fight as much as possible to bring him in.

Mitch Kupchak is targeting both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in free agency, but they will have a lot of competition. The Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and among other teams will all be fighting for the right to bring James in to the fold.

Of course with James, there is also the possibility of him returning to Cleveland who boasts Kyrie Irving and recent number one overall draft pick, Andrew Wiggins.

It is still highly likely that James returns to Miami and they re-tool the team around him, but any doubts gives the Lakers a slight bit of more hope.

i would love lebron to be in a lakers uniform next season but that’s just a dream, i give them 10% chance of acquiring him.

    • LakersHeatBeef

The Lakers are expected to meet with Anthony next week, possibly as soon as Thursday, according to sources. Whether they — or anyone — will get to meet with James is unclear, as ESPN Brian Windhorst reported Saturday that teams have not yet been able to schedule meetings with him.

Updated: June 29, 2014, 7:52 PM ETBy Ramona Shelburne

I found it in the Pau Gasol article and i thought it was big news to share.BREAKING NEWS:

      • Zimmeredge

        Kobe (48m/2years): 23m (2014), 25m (2015)
Gasol (20m/2years): 12m (2014), 8m (2015) we might have the ability to use the Amnesty on him at this point if we wanna open cap Space for the fa 2015.
        Melo -or lebron- (80m/4years): 17m (2014), 19m (2015), 21m, (2016), 23m (2017).
        Randle (5,5m/2years guaranted): 2,5m (2014), 3m (2015)
        Cap Space (Nash stretched): 58m (2014), 58m (2015), 22m (2016), 23m (2017)

        • Frank

Who the hell does that diva LeBron James thinks he is he won’t even meet with teams what a bid diva.Seriously the Lakers are too classy of a organization for this crap.Carmelo can come and at least he had the guts to set up a meeting with the Lakers for Thursday but we shall see.Our guy Julius Randle is a better pair with Carmelo anyways.Plus Kobe and Carmelo are legit friends and they get along great.Add in the wives getting along all in the family for Carmelo+Kobe.

          • MustardsOffTheHotDog

Technically, teams aren’t allowed to contact free agents from other teams until July 1 due to the tampering rule. Melo probably intends to meet with certain teams, but their shouldn’t be meetings scheduled at this point.

          • Dan

Players can schedule meetings. There are no rules against that.

        • LakersOverEverything

What amnesty? We used that on metta world peace

          • Zimmeredge

Next summer in 2015 we might be able to use the Amnesty. No this summer. Can you read well?

          • LakersOverEverything

Yes I read very well, bitch. I asked because I was unaware of another possible amnesty. Next time just answer the question, and not be a dick about it.

          • Zimmeredge

no problem. but the spare the reading of insults and everything else. :)

    • LakersHeatBeef

THIS JUST IN: Carmelo Anthony is planning on meeting with Bulls when free agency begins Tuesday. (via @ESPNSteinLine)

    • LakersHeatBeef

      Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 1m
Story going online now: ESPN sources say Melo meets with Bulls on Tuesday on Day 1 of free agency, then Rockets & Mavs in Texas on Wednesday

    • courtney harris

      No.

  • TheTruthKills

This is a smokescreen for LeBron to put more pressure on Heat management. He never had any intention of leaving the Heat.

    • Zimmeredge

Our target is melo. If the negotiations between heat and bron, wade and bosh fail then anything´s possible.
Bryant-bron-Pau or Bryant-melo-Pau is high basketball IQ. But imo i will only focus melo. We have a bigger chance to land him

      • Dan

No chance Melo joins Kobe. Financially, there’s no way lakers win a ring with those 2 making max money.

        • Zimmeredge

melo is our best shot right now. and he can come to the lakers. he won’t make the max but he will win more money than anywhere else except the knicks. bulls can’t pay for him more than 16-17 and they will kill their roster by doing that. houston, they don’t have the need to bring in a dominant player like melo. mavs they have chandler and felton with 18m and they will have to give carter, marion and nowitzki a good contract as well. and bring in some talent get deeper as well.
no lakers and knicks are top two teams.

  • sena

the worst situation comes for lakers.if they are targetting a pay cut to bring more talents to the miami i can say that they would get title next season coz they have a good bench role player and a true big3 besides we don’t have any of that.i can’t see lakers getting title till 2016.i wish lakers come back to championship contender.

  • JohnSmith00

Kobe and Carmelo would work just fine but all three is nothing more than a disaster waiting to happen.

    • courtney harris

      Thank you

  • jay

hurry up and come July 1st, the NBA is waiting for you. Free agency is going to be much more chaotic than last year (D12) for sure.

  • Andrew Hirigoyen

Beatin’ a dead fish. Saying the same thing ten different ways.

  • LegendInMyMind

It’s really difficult to like Lebron as a player. He’s boring and disloyal. The best parts of his highlights were done by a teammate. Recycles the same dunks over and over. Has very little flash or flourish to his game. No finesse, all power. And the media practically orders us to like him. This is one “great” who I won’t miss upon retirement, I don’t care if he IS the best player on the planet right now. His bullshit has hurt the game’s competitive integrity. That bullshit being how he just teams up with other all stars to chase rings instead of being a part of a REAL team and trying to beat those other guys. You don’t need a goddamn all star at every single position in order to contend for a championship. Isn’t the primary function of the CBA to prevent this kind of shit?

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

The primary function of the CBA is to prevent the Lakers from doing it.

      • courtney harris

        Amen!

    • courtney harris

This is easily the greatest comment this off season! I’ve been saying this Miami teamed up.. Thank you for being a voice of reason

  • jay

There’s truly one thing that will get solved this summer. Whichever team Lebron decides to go to, every other team in the league will have to move on from him. Especially Cleveland, if he doesn’t go back. Its just the next step for Lebron to cement his legacy, now I see why the decision is “truly up in the air”. If the Lakers get lucky and land him, I wouldn’t mind. I’m all in for whatever makes the Lakers a championship team again. I can’t even imagine how crazy teams will go when Kevin Durant is a FA, lol.

    • Zimmeredge

And Kobe will retire, so 23 off the book and we can give durant a Max contract as well haha anything can in this couple of years.

      • LakerLore

is this what our team has been regulated to. chase free agents every summer and pray that they choose to come here. pray that the lakers brand still means something to players in the nba.

        • Zimmeredge

          That was a joke….

        • courtney harris

Thank you. I truly question some of the true laker fans the lakers have always been an old school type run organization. This whole “let’s buy durant Westbrook bron melo & Kobe to win rings” idea IS CRAZY. You don’t need a bunch of superstars to win. What you need is a damn good coach. One or two reliable to players who can create their own shot mixed in with role players who all play TEAM DEFENSE. Oh wait – that sounds like SA.

  • Kb24

    Lbj re-sign for 120mil/5yrs bosh 75mil/4yr wade 60mil/4yr

  • Jesse

How bout we get Melo n lowry n pau.. n mayb Ariza. …

    • Dan

How bout you change the rules of nba team salaries so you can afford all of those players? You can’t just go out and sign whoever regardless of cost idiot.

  • Swaggy Keys

    Starters: Bench:
PG- Kyle Lowry PG-Jordan Farmar/Kendall Marshal
SG-Kobe Bryant SG- Swaggy P/Jodie Meeks
    SF-Carmelo Anthony SF-Wes Johnson/Xavier Henry
    PF-Julius Randle PF-Jordan Hill/Ryan Kelly
    C-Pau Gasol C-Chris Kaman/Robert Sacre

I think that could compete in the west…

    • VillainKing

You forgot Jordan Clarkson and DeAndre Kane this two PG will be more great player than Farmar and Marshall..also Fuck marshall he cannot play D!!!

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

He can’t play d, but he’s still a bargain at $900k. We need cheap contracts like his if we want any chance at any of the top-tier free agents this summer.

        • comrade24

also, the point guard position hasn’t been the most durable for us the last few years. If he’s cheap, keep him as a 3rd/4th option to play spot minutes

    • courtney harris

I can see this. I just wonder if any of these guys would sign one year deals because I’m pretty sure that’s what the lakers would be trying to give them. ** you did forget our second round guy

    • Dan

Lol compete for what? 8th? Doubt it. No proven rebounding or defense in that group

  • Lakers4Life

If there is anyone who can pull off a LeBron + Melo deal this summer, it will be Mitch and the Lakers franchise. They just need to take a paycut and perhaps even find a way to restructure Kobe’s contract. It’s gonna be a wild summer fellow fans! Keep your fingers crossed for the King to arrive!

    • Dan

Good luck getting Kobe to give away money, lmao! No chance of getting either free agent star

  • blackmambo

We have a great plan dont worry laker fans this season will be a great revenge we will acquire whats needed ! Have faith on the team #mitch #bussfam #lakerfan

  • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Can Lakers Nation please suspend commenting privileges for anyone who thinks Kobe should restructure his contract? I’m getting tired of these ridiculous uneducated comments. Also, please suspend anyone who proposes a new roster that includes over $100 million in salary. This is not a video game where you can just turn off the salary cap.

    • comrade24

agreed. might as well be posting

      PG- Magic
      SG- Kobe
      SF- West
      PF- Horry
      C- Kareem
not one, not two, not three….

  • comrade24

Honestly, i think Melo would be a better fit for the Lakers.

  • Dan

Zero chance lakers get the king
