According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Ian Begley, Carmelo Anthony is delaying his decision until LeBron James decides where he wants to play:

A number of rival teams increasingly believe that New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony plans to hold off on announcing any decision about his future until LeBron James reveals where he’ll be playing next season, according to sources close to the process.

If this really is the case, Lakers fans could be in for a much longer wait than originally anticipated.

The thought is that once LeBron chooses his destination, Anthony will see if there is any chance that he could play with his friend. LeBron will meet with Miami Heat President Pat Riley today, but the Cleveland Cavaliers are working feverishly to convince James to return to Cleveland.

If he can’t play with LeBron, Anthony is believed to be choosing between the Los Angeles Lakers or returning to the New York Knicks.

The possibility of a prolonged wait is bad news for the Lakers. They seem to be willing to wait on Anthony’s decision before they make other moves in free agency and it could cost them many top free agents including some of their own.

The team has already lost Jodie Meeks, Jordan Farmar, and Chris Kaman. With players being able to officially sign on July 10, the Lakers will have no means of stopping players from going wherever they want.
