NBA News: Suns To Pursue LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony In Free Agency

With the Los Angeles Lakers expected to pursue both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, another team in the Pacific division has the same off-season plan according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski:

Armed with an offer that no else in the NBA can make – a chance to partner with Carmelo Anthony on an instant championship contender – the Phoenix Suns are planning an aggressive pursuit of LeBron James on Tuesday, league sources told Yahoo Sports

After an impressive 48-win season, the Suns have cap space to sign two full max contracts to go along with a young, talented core in Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic:

The Suns have $33.5 million in salary-cap space and could shed the next $10 million needed to sign James and Anthony to maximum contracts without unloading the young core of guards Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic and center Miles Plumlee that pushed the franchise to 48 victories in the Western Conference last season.

While the Suns have not been mentioned as a destination for James and Anthony, it is an intriguing situation after exceeding expectations this past season. Many thought the Suns were going to tank for a chance at Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker, but were in playoff contention until the final day of the season.

Along with the Suns, the Lakers will have ample cap room to sign a player to a max contract, but are also looking to shed more by trading Steve Nash’s contract. While it is unlikely the Lakers will be able to trade Nash, the Lakers are exploring all options this summer including pursuing Trevor Ariza, Kyle Lowry, Greg Monroe, and Channing Frye.

This is the reason I don’t really want Melo and James because too many teams try to get them. We need to go hard after guys like lowry, ariza, deng, lance, and parsons. Once James and Melo gone, teams are gonna be looking dumb because they clear spaced for them and neither came. We will be looking like “Should have been went after the realistic option first”

    • Zimmeredge

Every teams wants to recrut the best players available especially if they are superstars and/or fp. Lakers have a history at doing just that. We have been successful doing that. Why should we change.

      • independentbynature

You mean like Dwight Howard? The Spurs are a much better model to emulate.Better to try to build a championship team than buy one.

        • Zimmeredge

The spurs are a great model based on draft picks and intelligent scouting what we have been doing here for a couple of years now with randle, Kelly, sacre, and maybe clarkson and kane if they deliver.
But if you look at our history you’ll notice one thing that wilt, jabbar, shaq and Pau have in Common. We went out big for them. Whether they were free agent or traded. That´s what we had to do big Time signings or big Time trades. Even Bryant and magic were acquired via trades (trade pick).
The spurs have their own culture of winning we have ours. I guess when duncan is out and gino too they will have to go all in on someone like Anthony Davis from the free agency. How are they going to replace Tony Parker? Arguably the best pg in the league for almost a decade. We, the Lakers, have our culture. Don’t get frustrated about fa and traded players because of dwight. That’s silly. If we get melo he will remain a Laker until the end of his career. A player of his talent don’t add trade clause to his contract. So we have no reason to be afraid by him leaving Town after a year. Period

          • independentbynature

I find Badazztj12′s expectations to be much more realistic than yours.I can’t even imagine calling the Lakers scouting intelligent. This is the only decent draft we’ve had since Bynum. The Spurs are full of late 1st and 2nd round successes.Ginobli,Parker,Lenard.Talk about silly….Everyone but the Lakers FO knew Howard would leave.Jimmy Buss has almost destroyed the Lakers “culture.”That’s whats “frustrating.”Jimmy Buss has a lot to prove before I could ever be as optimistic as you.I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1965 and I expect a lot more than what I’ve seen from this dysfunctional F.O. so far. You’re having “pipe dreams.”

  • Lakers 16 Championships Suns 0

    Suns are poop.

  • Andy L

    Good luck with that Phoenix…

  • Zimmeredge

Ain’t gonna happen. Just like melo or lebron to the clipps, rockets or bulls. Ain’t gonna happen. Just like associations lebron and melo is pipe dream because it can only work in Miami. So Miami would have to drop bosh along the way because melo ain’t gonna take less than18m a year.
Big three likely to stay put, melo likely to come to la. And that’s all. If he is not coming means the knicks have given him a great deal but won’t be able to after Pau.
It’s easy. Look at other team’s cap, look at our situation. It’s not a done deal but you have to be optimistic about the fact that we will be able to land Carmelo and bring back Pau.
And if that fails then we have multiple other plans.

    • independentbynature

I doubt Melo is coming to L.A. Most likely,he going to the Bulls.

      • Zimmeredge

Tell How is going to the bulls? They have to find a trade team for boozer or Amnesty him then gar forman is a rat. They will be over the cap with melo. Remember that they have to give a better contract to Dj Augustin. They will have to give Jimmy butler a better contract over the years and they have a bench to gather. How are they going to do that? Oh and btw rose does not represent much certainty healthy wise compared to Kobe.
Above all, melo is supposed to earn a Max contract this year. If he goes to the bulls he will have to play for less than 17-18m a year without increasing his wage. Unlikely to happen. The sacrifice melo will take and make to any team is to ask for a contract that is approx what he is earning right now:
Four years – 80m: 17-19-21-23 or three years – 60m: 17-20-23. I dońt think that this is possible for the bulls, the rockets, the clipps. Knicks can give him that but they won’t because it will happer their freedom on the market. Miami can do that but they will have to drop bosh or bron to have the finance. Lakers can do that because they have 23m and maybe 30 if we stretch Nash (maybe 33 if we trade him)

        • independentbynature

Melo has been rumored to favor the Bulls for weeks now.The Lakers were an after thought for him, probably a courtesy to Kobe.It could happen, but we are starting off way behind. The Bulls are much closer to a title than us and the East is an easier path to the finals. With Rose,Noah and Gibson, they are way deeper than the Lakers,at least so far.And Melo holds Thibs in high regard. If you haven’t heard the Bulls rumors about Melo, then you haven’t been paying attention. You must be joking about the health comparison between Kobe and Rose.Look at the age difference.I love Kobe, but lets stay real here.Melo “says” hes looking for a ring, not a raise. The Lakers are a long shot at best.To say that Melo is likely to come to L.A.,borders on delusional.I wouldn’t mind if it happens, but lets keep it real.

          • Zimmeredge

Melo can favor whoever he wants i just wonder How the bulls will pay him and How the bulls will assemble a cohérent team after melo hits the bulls. They will have a strong five but no bench except Mcd, dunleavy and others crap guys.

  • nash gots to go

are you kidding me? suns owner always avoid paying the lux tax, so why do you think both will come?

  • DKWTTY

Yeah Melo and Lebron aren’t going to Phoenix so they should just stop wasting their time.

    • Zimmeredge

That’s great to have 6players but now How do you build the rest of the team? Have you heard about cap holds? Cba? Bird rights? Etc etc etc

      • keenanjen

  • Thomas

    PG LeBron James+Jordan Clarkson+DeAndre Kane+Kendall Marshall
    SG Kobe Bryant
    SF Carmelo Anthony
    PF Julius Randle
C Boris Diaw+Andrew Bynum Veteran Minimum

STRETCH Steve Nash.Hire Mark Jackson as Head Coach.Sign Diaw Mid Level

Lakers A team With Great Passers In LeBron and Diaw no need for a true PG.

    • keenanjen

Bron is staying in Miami he’s not leaving

  • Lakers4Life

We can live with Melo ending up somewhere else, but LeBron is who we’re aiming for as first prirority. That’s Mitch’s priority, so it will be fun to watch the events starting July 1st. Get LeBron in the team, then surround him with good, solid role players.

  • ejavin808

Great players should compete against each other rather than teaming up for an easy wins. We wanna see real competition like in the 80s, 90s to early 2000s not a hollywood drama/acting/crying
