NBA News: Phil Jackson Meets With Former Laker Lamar Odom

After Phil Jackson took over as president of the New York Knicks, the speculation started to circulate about how he intended to turn around the struggling franchise.

Many believe Jackson’s first major change would be replacing head coach Mike Woodson with someone familiar like Derek Fisher or Steve Kerr. It still remains uncertain if a change will be made at head coach, but if the Knicks miss the playoffs, there’s a good chance Woodson will not return next season.

Along with a potential change at head coach, Jackson may also consider bringing in some former Lakers like Metta World Peace and Lamar Odom. Reportedly, Odom met with Jackson earlier this week during the matchup between the Knicks and Brooklyn Nets according to Marc Berman of The New York Post:

For a second time, Phil Jackson met with a former Laker at halftime during a game as Knicks president. This time, it was a sit-down with Lamar Odom during Wednesday’s Knicks-Nets game.

Odom’s struggles to get back on the court in the NBA was well documented throughout the 2013-14 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers showing interest. Although interest was expressed from two teams that he’s played for in the past, Odom was forced to go overseas to continue playing on the professional level, but a short stint in Spain didn’t end well.

The former Sixth Man of the Year knows the triangle offense as well as any player still playing in the NBA today. Jackson may very well give Odom another shot next season with the Knicks with the intention of reviving the offense in New York via Berman:

Jackson has admitted to being on “a talent hunt” and could look at former players familiar with the triangle offense.

At this point in time, there’s still a lot of unanswered questions in New York with no telling what the future holds for the storied franchise. The Knicks are on the verge of missing the playoffs and heads may roll as a result.

Along with potentially being on the outside looking in on the postseason, the future of Carmelo Anthony in New York remains uncertain as well. Anthony staying with the Knicks seems likely, but he may still want to test the free agent waters with plenty of teams like the Lakers, Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls ready to show interest.

Lamar.Odom’s last season with the clippers a few years ago was a disaster. He is slow now. If he did use coke, his heart is probably fukced up by now. Phil may be living in the past. Haha no wonder the lakers never hired him.

I mentioned that this would happen. I also mentioned that he (Phil) would talk with MWP (and, we did see them talking at the Lakers / Knicks game). He’s talking with Derek Fisher too. Pau is next on Phil’s contact list (after this season). Lakers 2010, except in NY and on the Knicks.

Who else will Phil contact? Caron Butler? Matt Barnes? Andrew Bynum? ( I think that ship has sailed). Just to mention: years back, Phil identified Carlos Boozer and Chris Bosh as potential recruits for the Lakers. He might contact them (Bosh’s contract is up). NY basketball is going to be exciting.

Yes, I’m a Lakers fan, but also a fan of the Lakers-Knicks-Celtics triad. If any 2 of these teams are spearheading the NBA, then the NBA brand rises significantly. Look for that to happen soon (I don’t expect it for Celtics, but Lakers / Knicks being on top would be great).

I can definitely see a formidable frontline of Chandler/Gasol next season in NY. Chandler will play all the defense and Pau would be Pau.

New York suck for so many years,

    • Kobe Will Get 6

You make good points, but there are a few reasons why I think that wouldn’t work in New York. First off the Knicks won’t have cap space until 2015, meaning Pau will have to sign for a very cheap amount or will have to work out a sign and trade with the Lakers this off season. Second, Pau (will be 34), MWP (34 going on 35), Odom (34 going on 35), meaning they are getting up there in age, and even though they might be able to produce for the Knicks, they aren’t the players that once helped us win a championship. Third, Barnes won’t be a free agent till 2015 or 16, however they could go after players like Butler and potentially Boozer because I believe the Bulls may amnesty him during the off season to help clear some cap or to go after Melo, and Bynum, well… let’s just leave it at that, but the problem remains the Knicks won’t have the cap space to sign these players, unless trades are made (Chandler, Shumpert, Hardaway Jr., draft picks).

(No shade being thrown at the Knicks, they are also my second favorite team behind the Lakers)

His fall from grace was Marring a Kardashion.

Pau wants to go to a team that has a good chance at a title, so that leaves out NY.
