Brown coached in Cleveland for five seasons and compiled an impressive 272-138 record. After losing in the conference semifinals in 2010, Gilbert fired Brown who landed on his feet with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011.

In the lockout season, Brown led the Lakers to a 41-25 record, but they lost in the second round to the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games. Brown was given the benefit of the doubt as general manager Mitch Kupchak stated patience in giving him a full training camp.

With the additions of guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard, Kupchak pulled the plug on Brown after a 1-4 start to the 2012-13 season.
