NBA Free Agency Rumors: Carmelo Anthony Decision Expected After Weekend

Carmelo Anthony has been one of the most sought after free agents this off-season. He has met with the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks already, and will meet with the Lakers and New York Knicks today.

Anthony who has a home in Los Angeles is expected to take this weekend to consider everything and make his decision according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski:

The Lakers have high hopes that they will be able to convince Anthony to join his good friend Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles. If they are successful, there is belief that they will also be able to retain Pau Gasol, giving the Lakers their own ‘Big Three.’

The Lakers are facing stiff competition in their pursuit of Anthony. Both the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets boast ready-made rosters that will definitely be championship contenders with the addition of Anthony. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks have Phil Jackson as their new President, and can offer him the most money.

With Anthony’s decision in limbo, the rest of free agency is basically on hold. The Lakers and the rest of these teams are focused on landing the superstar, and will wait until he chooses to truly go after other targets.

This could cost the team some other prized free agents as point guard Kyle Lowry has already decided to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors.

It’s either Bulls or Knicks for Melo… maybe with the Lakers right under

  • Badazztj12

Look see he has interest in Lakers. He wouldn’t be spending his time in LA for no reason

    • Doug Meyer

Until you realize he has a home in l.a.

      • LegendInMyMind

Which also may give him reason to have interest in the Lakers…

        • Smh…

Because his house in new york is so much worse….

          • LegendInMyMind

No, but if he were to leave NY, LA could provide a pretty easy transition.

    • hookedonnews

He’s also meeting with the Knicks (Phil Jackson) in LA. He’s already met with the Bulls and Mavs. That’s what FA’s do. Means nothing.

      • Badazztj12

Yea that article just came out, so I just found about that. How about you comment that on that article

        • hookedonnews

It applies across the board. These guys enjoy being courted by the various teams. The bottom line is that they are going to meet with all (or most) of the teams that have an interest in their services, but a meeting doesn’t mean they intend to sign with a particular team. He already knows what each team is able to offer him and probably has a pretty good idea already where he’s going to sign. Or he could be like Dwight Howard and unable to make up his mind until the last minute. He reportedly said he would consider LA if we upgraded the roster. So far that hasn’t been done. None of us knows what he’s going to do. We’re all just guessing until he tells us his decision.

      MONEY …….

      • lakerfan

If he comes to LA what about the money from Sponsors??? Its the Lakers were talking about one of the best sport franchise in the world…

        • Doug Meyer

Yep. Imagine his deal with Jordan shoes will skyrocket playing for Chicago.

          • Badazztj12

            Are you a Laker fan?

          • Doug Meyer

A fan of basketball. All this melo to l.a. talk is nonsense. Out of the 5 teams that would be the worst place to go. There would be absolutely no defense on the Lakers.

          • Badazztj12

Don’t need a defensive stopper to play team defense. Lakers last year had Mike D as coach. A coach who only cared about his offense, which takes the most energy out of the players, and then excepts them to play a little D to get a stop, while running the team down in practices. Most Laker fans on here believe we can get Melo. If you not a LAKER fan, we don’t need you on this site

          • Doug Meyer

Don’t let my comments hurt you

          • Badazztj12

            Really?

          • Doug Meyer

            Seems that way.

          • Badazztj12

Believe what you want to believe

          • Doug Meyer

I do. And I believe he’s not going anywhere close to la

          • Badazztj12

I swear people like you just always have something to say.

          • Doug Meyer

You done or is this nonsense gonna continue?

          • Badazztj12

lol funny I was thinking the samething about your comments

          • Doug Meyer

Yeah but your still replying. Look everyone outside l.a. knows melo wants to win. L.a. with melo isn’t coming out of the deep, deep west. Then he’d be rebuilding in 2 years. Kind of why he wants out of n.y. right? Why leave your hometown and millions on the table to be in the same situation? Sorry my opinion has bothered you so much but its just that an opinion.

          • Badazztj12

If he wants to win why haven’t he agreed to sign with Bulls or Rockets yet? If he wants money why haven’t he already went back to NY? You don’t even think. Its common sense that he wants money and wants to win. We have cap room to sign him, go over the cap for Gasol, stretch nash for extra cash for the bench. He can even pick the coach for us. Use your brain a little before replying again

          • Kenneth Simkins

Dont Underestimate the Lakers and Kobe you hater!

          • Doug Meyer

I don’t. But its time to stop overestimating Kobe. The man is 38 years old. With a bad leg and ACL. Let me ask you something, when’s the last time a big free agent, has said I’m going to L.A. to help Kobe? I can’t name one time. Want to know why? Reputation. Ball Hog. It a dumb move for both. Both need the ball alot . L.A. is rebuilding, exactly what melo is trying to escape in n.y. might as well take the 129 million and trust in Phil to make the Knicks a team again, Right? Not hating, just making some sense. You got some rough years ahead of you. Don’t be surprised if Kobe wears another uniform for number 6.

D’Antoni ran very limited practices and concentrated a lot on defense according to coaches and players. Time to get the facts and stop repeating what other people say who also don’t have the facts. Not every Laker fan believes Melo is the right choice for this team and a lot of them doubt he’s coming. What has he ever won? He’s also injury prone. George Karl (his former coach) said that a lot of people in the NBA don’t believe you can win a championship with him on your team. So don’t assume that everyone is down with Carmelo because they’re not. A lot of fans are desperate and believe that because he’s a scorer that getting him would be a good thing. A stagnant offense with no ball movement is not good for any team. That’s what they had in NY this season.

          • Badazztj12

HAHA sure you tell me while most every Laker playing like there tired. I watched every game unlike you. If Mike D was concentrating on defense, why didn’t they didn’t improve in defense? Why are they last in the NBA in defense? The Bucks and the 76ers even played better defense than us. They were in the TOP 3 in the lottery. Wouldn’t make sense for Melo to get a meeting with the Lakers, if he wasn’t interested. I didn’t say ALL think he will come to LA but MOST of us do. Some of you have already given up on the Lakers lol. You guys call yourselves real fans? Most likely we are getting Byron Scott and he is installing a post up first which would lead to high % shots and less ISO, unless its in face-up situation.

          • hookedonnews

The reason they were tired is that they barely had enough players to put on the court every night. One game they had to put Sacre back in after he had fouled out in order to have 5 guys on the court. The Spurs and GS both play a D’Antoni-type pace and both play defense. Same for the Heat. The reason the Lakers didn’t improve was because they never had a stable roster which is necessary if you’re going to play effective defense. When you have over 300 games lost due to injury and players going in and out of the lineup you can’t develop any consistency on defense where players have to trust their teammates to rotate, etc. If you were watching all the games you know who was on the roster day in and day out. Not a lot of great defenders out there.

I don’t think you or I know what the majority of fans want or think. The few people who comment on these blogs don’t represent the totality of Laker nation. There are plenty of people who don’t believe that Carmelo & Kobe together would make any sense and doubt that he’s coming to LA. Listen to any sports talk show. Melo has also met with the Mavs and Bulls. Simply meeting with a team doesn’t mean he’s going to sign with them or has a real interest. Maybe he will sign with LA. I don’t know. I’m not a mind-reader. But if he’s interested in winning a championship right away we both know that the Bulls would be the logical choice. It’s much easier to get into the Finals in the East.

I haven’t given up on the Lakers, but I understand that right now we don’t have the players to compete in the West. We only have a handful of players signed for next season and no coach. It’s going to take at least a couple of years to rebuild this team barring LeBron deciding he wants to be a Laker, and Kobe & Nash staying healthy all season.

If you want less ISO, signing Carmelo is not going to accomplish that. ISO is his middle name, and it doesn’t matter who the coach is. Just ask George Karl, Mike D’Antoni, and Mike Woodson

If Melo signs with the Lakers and helps us get into serious contention I will be the first to cheer. But I’m not going to assume that his coming here and eating up all that salary cap would guarantee anything. He’s a great scorer, but he can’t carry a team like Kobe can. I would prefer younger more athletic players who can play defense and score and are willing to be team players. The Spurs have provided the blueprint on how to build a championship team, and it’s not about signing superstars who want max money and aren’t coachable.

            Here here

    • hookedonnews

I read today that she wants him to stay in NY.

  • Al Haldie

And we do nothing until he makes up his mind – we could end up just like last yr —this is really dumb.

    • ‘James Edwards

Last year the Lakers had little to no money and the FA market was horrible….it’s not the Lakers r waiting on melo it’s the other players who are free agents are waiting for melo and bron to decide nobody with cap space is gonna choose deng over bron so everybody in the basketball world is waiting for those 2

      • Badazztj12

Only one big name so far is signed and he wasn’t gonna turn down that deal (Kyle Lowry)

    • Zimmeredge

it’s not that we do nothing it’s that we can’t do anything. players won’t give their agreement because melo, bron or bosh implies a lot of changes in the rosters etc. it’s a normal situation. we can’t hire players and players don’t wanna get hired right now.

    • AC

Only thing i’m scared about is Hill leaving, Lakers CANNOT let him go, they gotta bring him back… such a valuable guy on the team. FO needs to re-sign him ASAP!!

  • lakersforlyf

    Join us melo….. JOIN USSSS.

  • Richard

Should the Lakers be willing to go over the cap to get the players they really need now?

  • hookedonnews

How did that big 3 work for the Heat this season? Hope they don’t sign Anthony. Did no one learn anything from what went down in the Finals this season? Carmelo Anthony is not a player who can bring a championship. He has barely made it to the playoffs since he’s been in the NBA. He’s not a Kobe or a LeBron. He’s a ballstopper who will get his points (no matter how many times he has to shoot). He kills ball movement and will suck up too much money. Hope he stays in NY. If the Lakers are looking for someone to take up the mantle when Kobe retires, they are looking in the wrong direction IMO.

    • Cuco

Heat went 2-2 in four straight Finals appearances. Id say overall it went pretty damn well for them. People will say it was a failure bcuz LeBron opened his mouth claiming 8 Championships.

      • hookedonnews

They should have lost 2 in a row to the Spurs. They play in the East where it’s easier to get into the Finals. Besides, they had LeBron. Melo is no LeBron. I don’t say it’s a failure. I just say that the way to build a team that wins consistently is the way the Spurs did it. You need more than 3 great players or a really good starting 5. You also need a great bench. When you spend all your money on superstars it’s harder to do that. You have to have players who are willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. LJ, DW & CB were willing to do that, but they still were arguably not the best team in the NBA 3 out of the 4 years they’ve been together.
