NBA Free Agency: LeBron James’ Agent Pushing For His Return To Cleveland

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

What once seemed like a pipe dream is starting to look like a serious possibility. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul is pushing for James’ return to Cleveland:

At the urging of LeBron James’ agent, the Cleveland Cavaliers are pursuing a maximum contract salary slot to bring back the free-agent superstar, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Rich Paul, the president of Klutch Sports, has been funneling belief into the organization that the Cavaliers are in strong position to lure James from the Miami Heat, sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Cavaliers currently don’t have enough cap room to offer a maximum deal to James, but have been frantically searching for a third-team to take on Marcus Thornton’s contract in a trade that would send Jarrett Jack to the Brooklyn Nets.

James is the gem of this free agency class and was originally believed to be returning to the Miami Heat. But last week, James’ agent met with representatives from a number of different teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, and teams were hoping to be able to meet with James himself this week.

Now the Cavaliers have emerged as the ‘front runner’ to land James in some people’s eyes and they are expected to do everything possible to appease James, even taking the infamous Dan Gilbert letter off of their official team website according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst:

With both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony yet to make decisions on where they will play next season, free agency has been on hold for the most part. But major dominoes could fall in the NBA soon.

Money and endorsement will pay. Also, if he wins in Cleveland, he will be a legend and he would never have to win more than one there. He will be the Jordan of Cleveland!

Damn fuck Melo. This nigga taking too long. We need to start looking for other guys

  • afs

Honestly, our team can still look GREAT without Lebron

    PG- Isaiah Thomas
    SG- Kobe
    SF- Melo
    PF-Randle
    C-Gasol

I know getting Lebron would be awesome, but that would leave no room for Randle in the starting lineup unless Lebron played point.

    • rival

Don’t worry, randle off the bench would be sick. It would also help with his development

    • Zimmeredge

Even if there is only melo i guess randle will start the season off the bench. I don’t think we need a good, ball handling pg if we have melo and Bryant and Pau. What we need is someone who can stay in front of money pg, shoot from three and play off ball on offense.
The best way to stop supra athletic pg is sécu ring the paint. If you stop Lilliard, wall, westbrook’s penetration you will first them into shooting from the perimeter. They are just not good at doing that.

Anyone else get the feeling LeBron is just toying with other teams? Pat Riley seems pretty unconcerned about his players going anywhere. It feels to me like LeBron just wants the Cavs–and maybe other teams–to gut their roster to make room for him, just so he can decide to leave his talents in South Beach.

    • ALamont

I somewhat agree with you, Though I think what he is doing is holding up progress for other teams, giving Riley time to entice desperate free agents to come to Miami where he (Labron) was staying all along.. After they’ve mucked up other teams free agency search…. These Miami guys are sneaky, The league should have learned that 4 years ago.

If the rumours about wage issue are correct riley can’t do much with what is left in his pocket. Guys, big three have cap holds to think about. Riley should resign his players first to Know Exactly How much money he will be able to spend and on whom. We are talking about Max contrat for lebron. 16m for bosh and 12 for wade so this is not enough to sign deng, ariza, gasol. Riley cannot sign anybody because there is this uncertainty about lebron not coming back. If the big three were to get together again it should be done by now. But wade, bosh and james can’t agree for who’s gonna take a paycut, big three do not agree with riley for paycut. There are heading straight into a wall.
There is a scenario in which james can exerce pressure on the league but it’s not helping Miami recruiting good fa. It’s a burden for riley because lebron has not yet resigned with them and he won’t until wade and bosh agree on paycut and until riley recruits good players.

I said from the start that LeBron is just using other teams as leverage to pressure Riley. LeBron only becomes a flight risk if the Heat completely strikeout on everyone else (Deng, Ariza, Pau, Okafor, etc.). In the event that happens he’s probably headed to Cleveland.

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

The problem with that idea is that LeBron has to be the first chip to fall into place. If he doesn’t commit to Miami, then Bosh becomes a flight risk. Privately, I think he has already committed to stay, but he obviously wants one more piece since he is no longer able to carry two other all-stars to titles.

When was the last time The Lakers did something fast and furious???Yeah this Mitch guy had since midnight July 1 to close a deal on a player yet he has lost a few of his own guys and still nothing?Ya today is July 7 what is up?Is Mitch serious? When i see LeBron and Carmelo in free agency then i know it’s holding pattern for the whole NBA but Mitch needs to close a deal with both players that’s the most likely way they could recruited to The Lakers camp.Prepare you’re self for a whole new lifestyle party people throw you’re hands in the sky.Malibu beach house parties and shopping sprees on Rodeo Drive and beach parties.Fake ass men faking deals while the real are closing deals.Mitch is on the clock.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Nobody can sign a contract yet, so chill. The Lakers want Pau back with Melo or Lebron. So far, all three are still in play, and there are plenty of role players and filler out there.

Mitch is the best GM hands down in the whole NBA.Nobody builds a team better than Mitch Kupchak,he has the longest success of any GM 5 championships in 14 years and 7 NBA finals all as a GM.And Mitch has traded for Pau Gasol and he is about to get Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James brace yourselves world.Mitch is a persuasive salesman with a degree in manipulation and convincing with collateral.

cleveland and their fans burned lebron jerseys and sent infinite hate his way now they are crying for him back? haha i hope lebron disses them

    • TheTruthKills

Don’t forget Dan Gilbert dragged LeBron’s name through the mud with that letter.

  • Jim Ballard

The NBA will be a little better place if Labron goes home. Sure wish LA was home.

  • Ryan LeBraun

Lakerland is the best spot for LeBron, because:
    1) LA can offer a max contract. If LeBron signs with LA, Pau likely returns (and at a discount). Bosh and Pau are comparable. Personally, I’d rather have Pau. Pau can actually play defense and rebound the ball.
    2) Who’s more effective? An aging Kobe who’s 100% healthy and could possibly play 70+ games? Or a breaking/broken down Wade who you know is going to miss a MINIMUM of 25-or-so games just for “maintenance” purposes?
    3) LeBron gets a shot to play with Pau and Kobe (and Randle) to make a run at the title for Kobe’s final two years. If it doesn’t work out, then in 2 years, when Kobe’s contract expires, the Lakers will be set up with tons of salary money to throw at another all-star player (or players) to sign and run with LeBron for more titles. Not to mention, Kobe, if he decides not to retire, will likely return at a steep discount for a year or two more.
    4) With remaining salary, and should Pau sign for a discount, Lakers maybe able to pry Isaiah Thomas from the Kings with a good enough offer.
    5) The Heat “improved” their team by adding…McRoberts and an injury prone Granger..?
    6) With LA, LeBron gets to handpick his coach who he prefers most.

ESPN is so full of shit now they tryna promote Chris Bosh going to Houston and get the money as its the greatest thing in the world instead of staying on the team with the best player in the league. But Carmelo is supposed to ignore the money that he can get in NY and go to Lebron. Its clear the are tryna push for a pairing of Lebron, Carmelo, Wade in Miami. I hope Pat Riley signs Bosh, Wade, and Lebron and melo still chooses between NY and LA. Even though its been reported multiple times that Carmelo is thinking about coming to lakers they still refuse to give the lakers any respect it a damn shame.

  • KobeMeloBron

If i were lebron id stay in Miami, Cleveland has had 3 number one picks out of the last 4 and still can’t get it right i dont fell sorry for the organization i feel sorry for the fans that they have such crappy ownership. It’s obvious the nba has thrown them a bone multiple times and it still isnt good enough to turn that around.

  • KobeMeloBron

Whats crazy is The Decision was and ESPN special and they have been the main ones bashing it and it was on there network.
