NBA Free Agency: LeBron James Leaves Heat To Sign With Cavaliers

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

After months of speculation about where LeBron James would sign as a free agent this summer, the superstar chose to leave the Miami Heat in order to head back to where it all began with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Sports Illustrated’s Lee Jenkins:

In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have.

I’m ready to accept the challenge. I’m coming home.

Although the Heat appeared to be the favorites to land LeBron and for good reason after going to the NBA Finals in four straight years with the superstar leading the way, the desire to return home was just too great for arguably the best player in the NBA.

LeBron James will join rising star Kyrie Irving and the number one overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft in Andrew Wiggins. A solid young core with a lot of potential with LeBron as the undisputed leader in Cleveland.

Lakers Nation Store Is Back! Check Out The Latest Gear!

With LeBron now in the fold back in Cleveland, it’ll be interesting to see what the team’s next move is to surround the four-time NBA MVP with more talent. Rumors have been floating around that the Cavs intend to engage the Minnesota Timberwolves in trade talks for Kevin Love.

The perennial All-Star has been rumored to be on his way out of Minnesota for quite some time, but there’s been no progress in trade talks with any team that has shown interest. Cleveland would be an attractive destination for Love with LeBron in the mix and there has been talk of the star forward willing to sign an extension with the Cavs if the two-time NBA champion came back to Cleveland.

Fortunately, now that LeBron has made his decision, movement on the free agent will start to kick into high gear. Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony will likely be the next dominos to fall followed by Pau Gasol and Luol Deng.

wow.. just wow. what does melo do now???

    go lakers!

    • ra

Perfect scenario. Prodigal son returns to Cleveland. Miami is done now (didn’t like them much anyway). Just like DH, LBJ returns to a small market team. OK, so now we know that LBJ will never come to LA – he will finish out in Cleveland, and that’s that, we can move on.

As for Melo, this rules out Melo signing with LeBron’s team. So he’s back in NY, LA, Chicago mode, and the possibility of Miami is a bust (I’m sure he won’t want to team up with DWade).

His choice is clear: LA. He has a better chance of getting to a championship with us than with those other teams. NY is a damaged franchise, Chicago has a bunch of ‘strung together’ players who haven’t been able to step it up. But LA actually has a chance to build around Melo, and is good at doing that. Also, if Melo comes here, he teams up with his buddy, and also has Pau here. It will work out well. Miami is out of the picture, and I think LA with Melo and Pau (and Kobe of course) is formidable.

This is good news (so far).

      • wangkon936

Better chance in LA? Hahahaha…. We have the far more tougher conference! Melo will have to try and bust through six 50+ win teams out here in the West (Spurs, Golden State, Clippers, Memphis, OKC and Houston). In the East? Only two 50 win plus teams. Trust me. Melo’s choices are NYK 1A and Bulls 1B. The Lakers are like choice 2C.

      • LakersHeatBeef

I can’t hate on LeBron James leaving millions on the table in Miami plus 4 straight finals appearances and 2 championships and going to Cleveland for less money and one 1 less guaranteed year no 5th year in Cleveland just 4 years as Miami was offering a max deal for 5 years during the Pat RIley meeting.I applaud LeBron James for doing the right thing and righting a wrong in Cleveland. This proves to me he is a good guy that has unselfishness in his personality it makes me respect him a lot more than before.

I am also a Andrew Wiggins fan hopefully he won’t get traded.LeBron and Wiggins with Irving will be fun to watch.

        • Chrmngblly

At least when LBJ left Cleveland, they did a sign and trade and Cleveland didn’t get stiffed. I don’t think the way FA works is so hot for competitiveness in the league. Very disruptive. There needs to be at least some kind of compensation.

        • Kb24

No paycut for him, cavs offered him MAX

      • LAstory

Just in per Stephen A Smith…Lakers out of running for Melo

      • Jim213

Given the inexperience on the roster (tho w/a very good coach) don’t see Lebron winning more than 2 titles at most in Cleveland. However, applaud this move as IMO he wants to help bring a title to Cleveland while showing that he can carry a team himself.

However, this move will likely place him out of any Mt. Rushmore talks 5+ years from now. Have Lebron as a top 25 all time player but he may not likely make the all time top 10 once his career is over. It’ll be interesting to see what he manages to do once he’s past his prime yrs.

      • roseducanna

        MELO never sign with LAKERS.

    • Roger

      Mark Medina ‏@MarkG_Medina 12s

Bovada has Cleveland as NBA title favorites next season w/ 4/1 odds. Spurs have 5/1 odds. Lakers? 65/1

  • Crazy!

  • Patrick Mahome

Would you mind sharing the link of where you read? Been looking all over for details and I cannot find none…

    • Flip

      sport illustrated

  • joe23

Now it Melo’s turn to decide where he going?

  • kookiebuger

    That’s disgusting.

  • Badazztj12

    And let the domino’s fall……

  • Eric Cartman

Yes! Now Miami is going to suck!

  • vdogg

does melo go to CHI now? hope not!!!

  • joe23

    Bosh to the Rockets.

Miami fans all going back to Cleveland. LOL!!!

  • Badazztj12

Miami about to hit that rebuild and bandwagon Heat fans are about to follow Lebron

  • KobeBrazil

Now the league will have an UP!
It’s really better the league balanced with one or (at most) two starts per team.
Most teams can struggle for the title and the league becomes more exciting.
Really hope Lakers can find anyone to replace Kobe. Kobe is been on the team for almost 20 years. It would be nice pick some one around 22, 23 years and then start a new dynasty! Someone with 30 years old or more wouldn’t be nice because the time to be a legend would be shorter.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

I agree we need to find and groom an heir. Most.think Randle isn’t that guy, but is there anyone out there now? Stephenson? Love?

      • KobeBrazil

Love and KD would be a huge pick I think. Of couse we can’t expect anyone like Kobe with that Killer Instinct. I can’t see anyone with this “evil inside” like Kobe is, Jordan was… Kyrie Irving would be a really nice pick if he didn’t sign with Cavs (that’s gonna be a really good team from now on) but I don’t know, maybe we already have one of these guys. Randle or Clarkson. Just time will say that. If Kobe was the 1st pick on the ’96 draft I bet my thumb Hornest would trade him like they did. So…surprises can appear!

  • Bruce Wayne

I fucking hate Labron but boy that was some great words from him concerned about boys and girls dream and the city itself. He didn’t mention Wiggins and Bennett tho maybe K.Love is coming this is a sad news for Lakers fans damn.

    • LakerSpartan117

      Why sad news for us?

      • Jeff

because if the lakers don’t get melo then their next big target in Kevin Love for next off season o(or mid season) would be in Cleveland.

      • Bruce Wayne

Kyrie and Love the “Laker targets” are now gone. Only hope is KD 2016.

        • LakerSpartan117

I’m not worried, and neither should you

        • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Love isn’t gone yet. He may be sent to Cleveland, but at the moment he is stuck in Minn and slotted to be a FA next season.

          • Badazztj12

They should of had made that trade with the Warriors. Now they not getting nothing in return

          • Bruce Wayne

Who are they gonna get from the Warriors? Thompson? LMAO, The cavs can send Wiggins ass there right away for K.Love.

        • Thomas Klein

Why is Kevin Love gone? That trade isn’t even proposed, no less done.

          • Bruce Wayne

Love said it himself he’s gonna sign long term if Lebron is there. You think Cleveland ain’t pursuing him now?

I said it a few days ago this is all so very convenient. A nice little fairy-tale ending. The NBA is like a soap opera. The Cavaliers strangely get multiple #1 picks in a row and now Lebron goes back to try and salvage his career. The ratings will go through the roof. Hmmm how strange.

    • John Alejandro

Salvage his career? I am no Lebron fan but I don’t deny his greatness. Maybe he will not get to 6 championships but his legacy is just fine. When it is all said and done he will be in the top 5 all time.

      • DKWTTY

Yes he jumped ship to join two other All Stars and everyone said it was cowardly. Him being a great player doesn’t change the fact that people kept saying Jordan and Kobe didn’t leave their teams to chase rings. lol You’re out of your mind.

        • Chrmngblly

      • Thomas Klein

Yea but you do have to admit the whole thing smells really fishy, multiple 1st round picks, some against huge odds, and now Lebron coming back, it’s too perfect of a storyline, sometimes I get the felling were watching the WWF of basketball.

        • rival

Of course a lot of people can’t think outside there box. NBA couldn’t send freeagents to Cleveland so what better way to prepare Cleveland for lebron’s return than with top prospects. The NBA just like everything is dictated by the elite.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

It is an entertainment industry, after all…

      • DKWTTY

I can see it now. TNT opening night Cavaliers vs Heat with Diddy’s “I’m coming home” blaring as the “King” returns as a hero and savior to the team he spurned 4 years ago. *puke*

  • LakerSpartan117

He left Cleveland because they weren’t good enough for him back then. Now that they have so many talented, young pieces they are good enough for him again?

Fuck him that’s what I say, egomaniacal asshole. He will never pass Jordan/Kobe on the all-time great list.

C’mon on down Melo.. your Knicks or Bulls won’t be able to stop that team

    • Lakers Fan

I have to admit. I like LeBron a lil more for doing this. He goes back to help the team that he abandoned. It will be great for his legacy. I dont see anything wrong with what he did. Don’t be an asshole/Laker homer man.

      • LakerSpartan117

I’m an asshole for expressing my opinion on some dude? You are the asshole friend.. and don’t call yourself a Laker fan when all you do is say they will suck for 10+ years. Troll.

        • Lakers Fan

I’m a realistic Laker fan. Of course someone who has knowledge of basketball would be considered a troll. And yes you are acting like an asshole, which unfortunately is the attitude of 90% of Laker fans(or might I say Laker homers). It’s ok for you not to respect his decision, but come on he did what he felt was best for him. You can’t be mad at someone for making a decision that was right for him and his family. I just don’t get the attitude of people towards LeBron. I’m one of the biggest Laker fans there is, but I never had a problem with LeBron leaving Cleveland. If you was in his position, you probably would have made the same choice.

          • LakerSpartan117

You don’t leave the team and city that you apparently “cried and bled in” and the pride yourself as a great. It was shit then and its shit now. I’m glad he’s going back, but that doesn’t mean you just forget who he is and what he did. That’s what blind “homers” like yourself do. And don’t use the “best for his family”bullshit here. His wife is on record saying that she misses Ohio and hoped to have stay there.

LeBron didn’t leave for his family, he left for himself. You aren’t a Laker fan, and we all know it. Accept you.

          • DKWTTY

It’s not that he did it but how he did it and now he’s considered some great man after all the asshole things he’s done. As a Lakers fan that you claim to be if Kobe had done this he would be ridiculed and condemned for the rest of his career. Lebron gets EVERY benefit there is and is heralded as some amazing hero.

    • ghost

He passed Kobe on all-time great year ago. We will be weak in next season too, it’s obvious.

  • AC

I guess Bosh is a lock to be a Houston Rocket then since LeBron’s going back home… Finally this Free Agency can run smoothly now with no holdups.

  • Badazztj12

Not gonna lie. Kyrie, Lebron, and Wiggins. Then they got a rebounding beast in Andrew V

    • Chrmngblly

Andrew V? Who is that? I don’t know ‘em by their first names, like you.

  • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Congratulations, LeBron and Ohio. I love this move for James. He went home. He went back to where it all began, and I think this will be the best for him. Best for him, best for his family, and best for his legacy.

    Well done.

    • Lakers Fan

Glad somebody is not a Laker homer and appreciate what LeBron did.

  • TheZuluNation

Good for him! And I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way.

  • rival

He used Miami bosh and wade to secure a championship now he can go back home.

  • Spade

Congrats to Cleveland fans. Pour out a little liquor for the Miami Heat bandwagon fans. R.I.P.

  • independentbynature

Well, unlike Melo,LeBron at least knows how to make a decision.

  • LakerSpartan117

The NBA set this up perfectly. Cleveland gets 3 number 1 picks, and now they get LeBron James back and possibly K Love? Bullshit.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

I think those three #1 picks definitely encouraged LeBron to return home. If that team was in shambles, he wouldn’t have gone back.

    • BULL

      double that

    • michael

And they want to tell us the lottery wasn’t rigged. Bullshit

  • Bruce Wayne

Heat fans buring their jersey will trend soon.

  • Brandon A. Benitez

Alright so we got the drama king out of the way now we can finally begin the free agency frenzy

  • Sti1lmatic

Good for LeBron. Nothing like home sweet home.

Mitch, what now for us Laker fans?

  • Brandon A. Benitez

But i am actually happy for him. Now he gets to be back home where it all began

    • Badazztj12

The East is still weak but there aren’t no overpowered team now

      • Spade

If I’m the Pacers I’m getting Lance back at all cost. Without Miami’s Big 3 in the way the East looks wide open right now.

        • Badazztj12

They don’t have the money for him, because they have to save money for Paul George. We got that money for Lance

          • Spade

Not for long. The Rockets are packaging Lin and a draft pick for us to take off their hands.

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Right. Now we’ve got an old fashioned NBA. Currently no superstar stacked teams. You’ve got some good duos, and plenty of TEAMS. Bosh to HOU could be the “big three”, but not even on the same level as Miami was.

        • Badazztj12

      • Brandon A. Benitez

Finally I like the nba much more when a team has no more than two stars, it’s finally balanced

  • David

That catchy song that goes like….Im coming home, Im coming home, tell the World im coming home. This is perfect!

    • David

That letter was amazing, who isn’t a Lebron fan now?

  • BULL

WOW .. smh well let the pieces start to fall.. Bosh to Houston, Parsons to Dallas, Lakers need to wake up and get on the map.. go out and see if we can do a sign and trade deal with Gasol. Try to go get a small forward and a pg .. Lets goo.. Melo and Knicks, Bulls just irritating.. lets move on from this!

This is bad for us Lakers fans if we don’t get Melo. Bosh goes to Houston and they get better, nothing would make me more sick than seeing Dwight Howard win a ring. Then all the other stars are going to want to join Cleveland.

    • BULL

that will only happen if Harden changes his game and become a little more of a passer .. Bosh do make them scary tho

    • KOBEmomo

If they did win a ring, and you feel sad, just remember Dwight being……. posterized by KOBE!

  • KOBEmomo

just hopin melo makes his decision NOW and not make more melodrama and play the waiting game

  • Edy

Fuck ! now can we ad least hire a coach so I can have some comfort in life

  • LakerSpartan117

Melo isn’t going to come.. we need to move on now. He’s choosing between CHI and NY.

  • Spade

If I’m Melo I’m running to the Bulls now. The East is for the taking.

  • BULL

too all my Laker family I honestly see Thomas, Kobe, Wesley or ?, randall and a no name smh .. wow .. well the summer league starts today I want to see how this Jerome Jordan guy plays .. hes 7 ft.. big body .. also like Ross and the pg frm dallas..idk Kelly not playing today? should be working on his game

    • BULL

and that’s if Thomas don’t pick another team smh all bad .. oh well at least kobe will be back next year

  • Kobe Will Get 6

    • Sylvia Ross

Don’t beg , if he wants to come fine. If not go where ever. WE DON’T EVEN HAVE A COACH YET!! What kind of shit is this? Man, this is a really messed up.

  • Benjamin Del Rosario

Anyone else think D-Wade is going to Chicago, HIS hometown. At this point, there’s no need for him to stay in Miami. Bosh is going to Houston. It’s like everything is a homecoming this FA….which doesn’t bode well for the Lakers as this trend would indicate Melo is staying in NY.

  • BrownMamba24

I think this is good for us. Melo will see that your legacy is way more important than money and number of rings(although having atleast one Is helpful). And what better place to build your legacy then here with the lakers.

  • Spade

    K. Love going to Cleveland soon. Wiggins, Bennett, Heat’s 2015 pick for Love.

  • rival

Haters keep saying the best options for melo are Chicago and NY. I just don’t see it, both organizations haven’t won shit in years, Lakers offer $$$ and a starting 5 of gasol randle melo Kobe and Jeanie buss can run the point, it’s still a better starting 5, there would be experience with gasol and Kobe(7 rings), there would be youth with randle and with melo in his prime we would be serious contenders even in the west.

  • sean

1.scenario=lakers get melo and pau back then make a deal for kevin love or melo is going to BULLS and no love will be here.but that doesn’t mean lakers will suck next year we have randle kobe hopefully pau is back and a potential pg.

  • wangkon936

Cool. I welcome the opportunity to see LeBron play with Irving and Wiggins. Should be exciting!

  • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

    RIP Heat fans 2010 – 2014

  • LA Lakers Framily Plan

Just another big free agent leaving money on the table and taking a 4 year deal instead of a 5 year deal and more money.Yeah screw the new CBA it’s a joke.

  • lakers4life

Lebron is playing chess..smart move..A trio of LeBron irving and wiggins is a better trio than wade and bosh..wade cant shoot the ball well from outside the paint that’s why he always drives towards the basket and shoot floaters. bosh has no post moves for a forward…irving and wiggins can get there own shot which is the new era the ability to get your own shot off I wouldn’t even say new because its always been this way if you ever played a pick up game at a gym where one is held accountible to score. Going to the cavs is a counter move against Durant and westbrook and if Melo decides to go to Chicago to counter him and Rose. This would be interesting to see where melo goes, either bulls or lakers?

    • Sylvia Ross

Who wouldn’t come back with a line up like the one he’s going to. I believe kyrie, knew that they were going to get labron or else he wouldn’t have signed for 5 years. Labron, was done with Miami when they lost to the over the hill gang from san Antonio. I hear we’re going to probably get Jeremy Lin.

  • Marty Susman

I think him going back to b the Cavs was the morally right thing to do…

  • Badazztj12

    Hbbert or Larry Sanders

  • Bruce Wayne

As a Laker fan its fucking pissing me that Duncan has a chance to surpass Kobe in rings and the fact that Lebron has a better team on a weaker conf. I really wanna see Indiana and Thunder go to the finals atleast we got Westbrook and PG repping Cali.

  • iEATcelticBabies

i respect lebron for going back to his home town, and finishing what he started.

  • Tite

Ehhh not gonna lose sleep over it.

  • Mark

damn… cleveland is now in the mix for kevin love as well. they’re gonna be building a super team in cleveland.

also, can you imagine the energy and passion that will be in cleveland with lebron and johnny football in tow?

that dipshit josh gordon must be feeling pretty stupid. he could have been apart of the cleveland rock and roll party lol.

i’m no lebron fan but i do respect him, even as a die-hard laker fan.

congratulations, cleveland. y’all are a very passionate sports city and you guys deserve this, especially after all the heartbreak you have been through.
