NBA Free Agency: Lakers Not Informed They’re Out Of Carmelo Running

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

The news has been flying in fast and furious today as LeBron James deciding to re-join the Cleveland Cavaliers has allowed the rest of NBA free agency to kick in.

Lakers Nation Store Is Back! Check Out The Latest Gear!

Lakers’ target Carmelo Anthony had reportedly crossed the team off his list, but the L.A. Times’ Mike Bresnahan says that isn’t the case:

Carmelo has remained quiet on his decision, but at this point it still seems that the Lakers are a long shot. Things are now made even more difficult with news that the Lakers have acquired Jeremy Lin.

Adding Lin to the books likely erases the money necessary to give Anthony a max deal. The only way the Lakers could pull that off is if they waived Steve Nash, and used the stretch provision.

It has also been well publicized that Anthony and Lin did not get along too well when they played together with the New York Knicks, so the acquisition could push Anthony farther away from the Lakers.

– Think You’re The Biggest Lakers Fan? Take The Ultimate Fan Quiz! –

The Lakers were supposedly waiting for Anthony to decide before moving to Plan B, and this move would seem to signify the Lakers ready to move on and fill out this roster.

Lakers fans could be in for a whirlwind summer if activity keeps up at the rate its going.

    Whirlwind?…. Please.

    • nik

Just wait bro.. we weren’t in the position to win a championship – let the Lakers continue to Make business moves positioning for the future the new CBA changes the game… if u are a True Laker fan see the vision – Lin’s contract is expiring meaning it valuable again at the trade deadline for more picks of young guys..

      • chris

see the vision? that sounds like Germany before the Holocaust. If you’re a true German, just believe in spite of the obvious craziness that is going on before your eyes. Wake up man, Lakers are done. Dr Buss is gone, Jerry West is gone, Laker Championship Culture is now gone too. Cap space for 2015? who cares, we have NO talent that anybody would want to play with other than Randle. Love Kobe but he played 6 games last year and is 35. the wiriting was on the wall when the Laker Brass signed Dantoni instead of Phil.

        • Jeff

Too much doom and gloom drama queen shit. Wake up. The lakers still have a championship culture. They still are in Los Angeles last time I checked. Cap space in 2016 means they can sign the talent and attract others. Players are still attracted to the Knicks and they haven’t won since the 70s and on top of that they have been an embarrassment. The lakers are fine. Quit wallowing you baby

          • rival

Of course, some youngster out there is licking his chops over kobe’s thrown.

        • borsalino12

Very good and true post. Congrats.

        • Gregory Gaylen

Yeah and who’s our Coach now? … the mysteries continue

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

By the time the Lakers finally get within the new CBA guidelines, we’ll have another lockout and another new CBA.

        • rival

What is it about the CBA that affects us and doesn’t affects other teams?

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Never a fan of the term “true ___ fan.” Each person is entitled to opinions, thoughts, desires, expectations. If they’re different than yours, that doesn’t make them any less of a fan.

      • Blake Mullins

Sorry, but there’s no vision in letting Isaiah Thomas get past us and then re-signing a bunch of hacks like Young and Hill to overpriced contracts and bringing in a bum like Lin just do get a 1st round pick that will end up being a late pick in a weak draft. That’s why we lost out on Thomas, who wanted to play here. Now, I’m sure they’ll fail to make a move at Monroe now that they have an over priced center in Hill for 4 years. Plan B is an absolute joke.

    • Jim213

Something to think about… with Lebron and possibly K Love joining the Cavs the Bulls won’t have a shot of beating the Cavs even if Melo joins their roster (Bulls). Same goes for the Knicks even if Pau decided to join either of those teams.

      • Gregory Gaylen

Don’t really need any more broke down aging players. Dwade is a tool anyway – F him!

        • Jim213

Considered Wade an option until Hill was signed. Scratch him off the list. Approximately $70 mil tied up now with all the acquisitions which goes with Nash’s contract too.

    • Joseph

Lets sign back a former Lakers player Devin Ebanks call him up.I miss him.

  • Andy L

    According to “a source”… That’s rich!

    • lakers72

as rich as the “source” that gave stephen a smith the headsup lakers were out

  • musaamos

    go for LANCE!!!!!!!!!!

    • Blake Mullins

Yea……….let’s over pay another hack. I bet you’d suggest going after Ariza after, huh?

  • J King

Let’s get Deng and Ariza. Lance is a good choice but he is a bit risky and he’s been asking too much money.

    • Jim213

Not happening if they end up acquiring Lin $14 mil salary. Pau will likely go elsewhere (if melo rumors prove accurate) but I’d sign Omeka Okafor to a one year deal $5-6 mil for the 5 while filling the roster with reliable players.

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Lin only has a cap hit of 8 million, I read. Gets paid 15 or so, but only 8 of that hits the cap somehow.

        • Jim213

Glitch in CBA but looks like their just over $61+ mil with a 10 player roster. KB24, Nash, Sacre, Marshall, Kelly, Lin, Hill, Randle, Clarkson, and Young.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Deng AND Ariza? They both play the same position. Pick one or the other. Ariza is younger, cheaper, but not as consistent in his career.

Lance is a bit off, but so was Arrest. Get Stephenson under mentorship from Kobe and a coach who doesn’t deal with nonsense, and he’ll have a chance to blossom. We’d have to chose ONE of Stephenson, Ariza or Deng, I think. Not sure we could afford two of the three.

  • BrownMamba24

I still want melo but even if it doesn’t work out we should trade Nash and first round pick for another asset. Good job Mitch

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

The only first we could trade prior to 2019 would be the one we’re getting from HOU.

  • Jeff

Oh my god give up already with the melo news stories. He’s not coming and who cares

  • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

The Lakers are out of it. Just stop..

  • Spade

Stop posting Melo stories. We’re out

  • rik

next years lineup now with todays news:
    PG: Lin, clarkson, marshall
    SG: Stephenson, bazemore, kane
    SF: Kobe, young, henry
    PF: Randle, kelly
    C: Monroe , sacre

    • zara fawn

      that is one shitty lineup

    • HELP

Well that takes care of the bench and injured list. Now what is the starting lineup?

    • chris

with Lin’s salary, Monroe & Stevenson & probably Nick young are all out of our financial abilities to acquire. Lakers need to realize that nobody wants to play for their ownership right now & Kobe is about done.

    • Daniel Sletten

Dumb…Kobe and Swaggy are not SF’s. Marshall will still start over Lin, and today’s news did not include the Lakers signing stephenson or monroe.

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Nick Young IS a small forward, and I feel like I’ve read about Kobe being able to play some at the wing.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

We could afford one of Stephenson or Monroe, not sure we could get both. Also, I think I’d rather see them sign a journeyman C for a season, and pursue Asik or M. Gasol in 2015 for some interior defense.

    • Chrmngblly

Hill, not Monroe. Why would we even want a PF for our center? He has no defense. Monroe is pointless.

    • Blake Mullins

We won’t even get Monroe now because they wasted a bunch of money on Hill…………Monroe would’ve been a much better option.

  • CrazyFan

Guys, I have not posted in a long time but this is it. Give me a f—en break. We have to beg super stars to com play for us. Without Pau and Melo we are going to stink for a very long time. What’s frustrating to me is the Houston rockets sucked two years ago until they got Harden. Now they are the cats meow. And the fricken clippers, warriors, mavericks, spurs are all getting better. How the spurs are getting better is beyond me. This is a great way to use Kobe’s last two years. Now K Love is headed to Cavs. There goes our target for next summer. Very very pissed off right now. We have this Huge contract from TW and can’t spend a dam cent of that money on a quality product. This new CBA is the worst thing this league has ever done. I hope they change this damn thing real soon. Thanks for letting me vent. Go Lakers

    CrazyFan

  • Mark

this isn’t a terrible trade, guys. it’s a one year cap hit at only $8 million, and we acquired a 1st round draft pick next year AND (supposedly) “future draft considerations.”

finally, the lakers are gonna have draft picks! hallelujah! my only quirk is this helps houston become a true contender in the west lol, but let’s be real… they had a trade set up with the 76ers anyway so it was bound to happen. if the lakers follow this up by waiving nash, we’ll still have $20 million in cap space to spend this summer. as many have mentioned, i really hope we turn our attention to lance stephenson. i think he’s a budding all-star and a terror on both sides of the court. watching him and julius randle grow together will be fantastic.

so… this lin trade doesn’t hit our cap TOO hard, it further cleans the slate for 2015, and we’re back in the NBA draft for future years to come.

…and i didn’t even mention that yes, jeremy lin can actually play point guard. he’s not a terrible player. he wasn’t utilized properly in houston. anyone who watches basketball knows that. he’s a deadly shooter and he’s got a great NBA body. his passing is pretty good, but he’s turnover-prone and he isn’t known to be a defensive enforcer. there’s some positives and negatives with him, but think of the 2014-2015 season as an audition for him. if he has a great year, re-sign him! if not? he’s free to walk.

    not bad, eh?

    • Mark

aaaaaand i just posted this on the wrong article. LMAO.

    • zara fawn

      its a shit move

    • chris

2015 nobody will want to play with any of our players other than Randle as Kobe will go crazy this year going 25-57 and probably retire

  • zara fawn

fuck*ing players shoud be killing themselves to come play for LA and with kobe. WTF kobe is not swiss cheese when healthy he will bust lebrons ass! This is LA you fuc*ing idiot nba players. IN LA you can make more money than any other city on earth with endorsements ect…. I really think that the players must really hate jim buss hate his guts ……

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

They make commercials in other cities, too. And most places have way lower tax rates than California. There’s a reason everyone takes less money to play in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Miami.

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

      You’re a delightful little flower, aren’t you?

    • Chrmngblly

      Jim Buss? Read and weep.

      http://thedailysportsheralddotblogspotdotcom/2014/03/jim-buss-timeline-and-decline-of-lakersdothtml

      Change the [dot]s to periods…You know…

  • Michael Davis

    What a joke

  • sena

i do know mitch what he is doing right now.i mean guys these moves refer to my scenario.lakers not waiting they are trying to spend all money.but exactly i don’t know how it will be done.but lakers in my scenario will get melo and love without pau and julius randle.next move would be first stretch nash then sign pau trade him with randle for LOVE and starting line-up
    pg=lin
    sg=kobe
    sf=melo
    pf=love
c=(ayn one aquired from t.wolves or jordan hill at a low price) but lakers always suprise us so don’t forget this)
then know why lakers didn’t sign a contract with randle yet!!!coz my theory is trure!!!

    • sena

this is best scenario for us.and consider that kobe love and melo played together at ucla!! it makes sense.and reports from espn say lakers moves are ridiculous.melo still waits coz he is not waiting on lebron he waits lakers to clear cap space

      • kookiebuger

Just stop, Kobe said he was never at UCLA playing with Melo and a Yahoo source said Love wasn’t their either and your trade scenario is beyond ridiculous. Do you think that Lin, Randle, and a pick would be enough to get a pick? The Cavs trade offer is much better with Wiggins, possibly Waiters, and Thompson.

  • carew10

    emmanuel mudiay – draft 2015!tnk

  • Angry Laker fan

Is it to late for TWC to opt out? Getting overrated overpaid Lin is the WORST TRADE EVER.

    • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

They did this for the pick, not Lin.

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I think the Lakers have made it abundantly clear they don’t care about late first-round picks.

        • kookiebuger

They care when they are rebuilding.

      • Angry Laker fan

true, but still i don’t like it, and I’m just bitter because i’m an NBA and Laker fan and not going to be interested in the product they’re putting on the court next year.

        • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

All teams have to rebuild. It’s just a reality.

          • Chrmngblly

Spare us the moralizing. Just keep the facts to yourself, please.

    • OG RiceBone

This is good for TWC. They are going into the Taiwan market with Lin.

      • Angry Laker fan

Haha very true, they might be the only ones watching

        • OG RiceBone

Win or Lose, doesn’t matter. I’ll watch my Lakers all the time. That’s what true fans do!

    • http://www.nowallsstanding.com trench

He’s an expiring contract plus we added a 1st rd pick. Lakers had no picks in 2015 prior to this trade. If the Lakers hadn’t done this trade and tanked the season again, they’d have NO PICKS. This trade made sense 100x over.

  • HELP

Be patient Laker fans. LeBrons’ contract is up in 4 years..

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

      Wiggins too.

  • Guest

Has everyone forgotten that Melo doesn’t like Lin and his play style? They both where in NY together… Lakers are out of Melo Mania

    • Marcus Franco

I didn’t knew about that.. I thought that ny got rid of him because of his lack of talent.

  • chris

looks like Mitch and company are shooting for the Lottery again. They must not realize they traded their pick away and just spent 15mil for the Rockets 1st rounder next year. nothing like the 30th pick in the draft. And LA must trade or renounce rights to Gasol so they can afford their new 3rd string PG. I miss Mr. Buss, Lakers not the same since. Kobe will end his career like Jordan, a diamond surrounded by trash and losing 75% of his games.

    • BULL

TALK WHAT U KNOW LIN COST US 8 MILL AND SOME CHANGE.. HIS CONTRACT UP AT THE END OF NEXT YEAR AND WE RECV A FIRST ROUND PICK 2015 DAMN LAKER FANS ARE FUKIN CRY BABIES .. THE FAKE ONES .. CHILL OUT AND LET MITCH DO HIS WORK

      • MRBIGGK70

Thanks 4 clearing that up she was making my brain hurt !!!!

    • Gregory Gaylen

      I miss Jerry West

  • sena

tell me guys why lakers didn’t sign a contract with randle czo we gonna use him in trade with pau for love and melo hopefully signs with lakers.this is my dream.next move(predicted) stretch nash fire him to mars to galaxy

  • ra

This is just a referendum on the continuous ineptitude of ESPN. What a colossal collection of losers, posing as ‘new reporters’. They are afraid to speculate, and when they do, they are 99 44/100 % incorrect.

Also, ESPN are habitual Laker-haters. The “Jeremy Lin” story is billed as a ‘Rockets’ item, rather than a ‘Lakers’ item. And it is clearly much bigger for the Lakers (yes, I know about the Bosh thing — don’t care, Rockets will end up having a bunch of colliding ball-hogging alpha-dogs, and won’t get past other West teams — the more screwy pieces for Houston, the better).

Lakers stock just went up with Lin. He was ‘clearly’ stifled in Houston, and at his best (esp. in NY), he can be amazing. With a clear slate in LA, he will be amazing, and people will be talking about this in the future. Also, Lin is the next big thing since Yao Ming to shoot up the World Lakers Brand. They will make so much $$$ from this, that it won’t matter about championships ‘quite yet’.

Mitch, good job. This was a move ‘out of the blue’ that will make LeBron, Melo etc. irrelevant. The Lakers will finally have a young ‘dynamic’ PG unlike any other. Yes, if Nash were healthy, we’d be thinking differently.

This is nothing but good for us. We just need a few bigs. Maybe Pau will stay because of this. Who knows. Other bigs come, and we’re good. Excited about this move, not to mention draft picks. This is good.

    • MRBIGGK70

      Lin + Yen = Lakers Win…… Cha Ching !!!!

You know why the Lakers’ haven’t been told? Because we are the fall back if Plan B doesn’t come to fruition! We are Plan C! It sucks to be Plan C. We don’t have to play this crappy game. It’s time to move on.

  • rival

The only way melo can drop a bomb like Bron did, is by joining the Lakers! Chicago and NY won’t give him that.

  • sena

do u know why love kobe and melo played at ucla??? let me guess they tested one another if they were a good fit or not.and it makes sense, right???

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

      Kobe wasn’t at UCLA

      • sena

show me a source!!!!!how did u know it???

            You’re nuts!

          • sena

every one could guess what other team make their moves but u can’t really know what lakers would do next.who guessed lakers would aquire lin? no one.but my point is that mitch is enough smart to spend money in the rigth direction.i am insisting on this big3 melo love and kobe coz it is clear all signs show it.

          • kookiebuger

They acquired Lin for the pick, Love might end up with the Cavs since they can offer the best trade package.

          • sena

ok let’s see what happens next….

          • DKWTTY

Yes. Why would he need to lie about being there with Melo? Face it, we aren’t getting either. It sucks but oh well.

          • BULL

            HAHAHAHAHAHAHA BURNNNN

  • zara fawn

espn wanted the lakers to be crap and there gonna reap what they sow. ratings will be down no one will give a shit about NBA. Lakers are the biggest basketball brand on the planet. there will be hundreds of millions of dollars lost with a crappy laker team in the nba!

  • DKWTTY

Swaggy P has agreed to return and Bosh isn’t going to Houston!! Finally some good news!

    • Stephen Gilson

About damn time 4 years 21 million. Good deal for the Lakers!!

    • BULL

OUR BENCH IS STR8 NOW THAT NICK IN ON IT ..

  • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

So, let’s get past Melo to LA. Not going to happen, and would have left us in poor shape to pursue long term talent.

I hope the Lakers are now heavily pursuing Stephenson, and Deng/Ariza. If they can manage to bring both of them, sign our role/bench players (Young, Kelly, Hill, Bazemore), and some one year guys, then we’ll have cap space next year.

Then, when Lin, Nash, and our one year guys drop off the roster, we can pursue interior defenders like Asik or Gasol. If Clarkson develops, he could be a future option at PG, otherwise we can see what’s out there when the time comes.

    • Gregory Gaylen

Let’s hope that’s the plan, or something similar. Would be great to become a DEFENSIVE minded team. That mentality and attitude is needed to compete for Championships.

  • CHVRLIE

Unless Buss sells the team, there will never be a championship.

  • Aaron

Lakers don’t have even enough respect for Carmelo to tell them i am not signing!

  • ADox

is the Lakers this bad not to be informed that they are out in Melo’s list? Do we really need Melo to win?

  • Lakers4Life

Say bye to Melo with Lin.
Today is a sad day for us Laker fans.

    • Gregory Gaylen

I hear you. Signing Melo was a priority, why, because he was the best player available (except Lebron) so naturally the Lakers pursue, but at 30, he’s really not a great piece long-term.

Sad day? Perhaps another sad season. Will stick with the Purple&Gold thru thick on thin!

  • Steel Bill Moreland

Wave old man Nash to get Melo.Hell thats a no brainer.Nash spends more time laying on the floor than playing on the floor. He is only in it for the money.Get rid of him and make Melo a real offer.

  • http://www.myspace.com/LewisSmithJr LewisSmithJr .

get nash out just because if melo wants to come he can but he decides not too we got money to get other players

  • borsalino12

Just relax Lakers fans. It is finally over. By trading for J.Lynn, M.Kupchak closed the door for Carmelo. It is well known around the league, that Melo and Lynn did not get very well together in N.Y. There is no way Kobe’s friend is coming to play another year with this guy. And all of that said, Pau Gasoft will sign two years deal with the Spurs, to get another two rings in his collection and then retire.I am soooo glad, these two are not coming to L.A., so we can work on signing several still available FA’s and make this team a better one.

  • Brayan Curi

es igual ala goleadaaa de alemania sobre brasil 7777 -111111111 CARMELO ANTONY ERA LA ULTIMA ESPERANZAAAAA o my god help the lakers

  • Brayan Curi

no longer loves the shirt .. there are no such kobes those jordans that before giving everything for the shirt

  • Brayan Curi

YEN IN GOOD BAD THE LAKERS IS MY CONSOLATION .. LETS GOOOO LAKERSS….

  • Kale Pinder

Very smart move by L.A. For the fans out there who dont get this trade think of it as getting a holdover PG to start, a first round pick, and a second round pick for pretty much nothing. Melo wasnt coming anyhow so why not move on. If im in Mich’s seat im going for Ariza and trying to get a decent big man to split time with Hill. The resigning of Young provides scoring off the bench so why not add some more talent like Bazemore and Ed Davis? Maybe even somewhat like Chalmers. Then we coul release Marshall and Nash and have a PG slot with Lin, Chalmers, and Clarkson.

  • Bruce

Well, I’m glad this fiasco is over with, Lakers moved on, resigned Hill and Young, traded for J Lin and draft picks. Don’t expect anymore major moves from the Lakers this point forward in my opinion other than fill out the rest of the roster with minimum contracts because the Lakers ain’t got the money to do so unless they got rid of Nash which it’s impossible. The only thing I’m looking forward right now is what they going to do with Pau, are they gonna sign and trade him with Chicago for Carlos Boozer? (Boozer has 1 year left on his current contract, coming off the books next season for the Lakers, it’s a low risk high reward move, if he’s productive, we can resign him for cheap next season) also a 1st round draft, we need assets.

    • Gregory Gaylen

Sounds reasonable. Only issue is Boozer and Randle play the same position. Would like to see Randle get as many minutes/experience as possible.

    • Bob

Major moves? I hadn’t realized the Lakers had made any major moves.

  • MRBIGGK70

We’re in for a looooooooooog season thanks Kobe and Jim !!!!!

    • Gregory Gaylen

Would have to agree with you, Sir. But as a Lakers fan, I’m not going to blame a thing on Kobe. He has fought his whole career to Compete and Win Titles. #neverforgetRINGS

      • MRBIGGK70

True i don’t blame him either nor Mitch it’s all on Jim Bust and this mess started as Jim took over B Ball Op now people see why Magic was so vocal when he went and got Mike B then Mike D then finally spoke at length about the team after the Clippers destroyed us on National Television then sends your little sister out to do damage control with the fans and media can wait til the spring of 2017 so we can get the free agent head of Basketball Operations !!!

        • MRBIGGK70

i should of rephrased my part about Kobe but was so mad about Pau leaving i felt we had a good squad Dumbtoni just didn’t utilize his players the right way !!!!

  • Matt Martini

BOSH RESIGNS WITH HEAT. GREAT MOVE LA. Better off signing thomas

  • Mike

Kobe closes his career winning 5 championships, great job. Hopefully he won’t complain about not winning another in his last 2 years with the Lakers. Took 24 million a year instead of a pay cut that would have help in acquiring talent, his call. You can have one or the other, a better shot at a championship or cash but not both.
