NBA Draft 2014: Smart, Payton, Stauskas Expected For Friday Workout

UPDATE (12:00 PM): Along with Marcus Smart, Nik Stauskas and Elfrid Payton, the Lakers will be bringing in Aaron Gordon and P.J. Hairston, according to Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report:

The Lakers are doing their due diligence ahead of next week’s NBA Draft. The team had a huge group workout two weeks ago, and worked out Julius Randle today. Now, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, they are scheduling a second group workout for Friday:

This is a good sign for both Smart and Payton to be invited back. Smart has been linked with the Lakers for quite some time, and apparently impressed in the group workout.

Payton has been one of the biggest risers in the draft. Originally expected to be a late-first round selection, Payton has played his way into a possible lottery selection due to his great passing and defensive skills at the point guard position.

Both guards have questions regarding their shooting ability, something that Stauskas doesn’t have to worry about. Some believe he is the best shooter in the draft, and he has the ability to play both guard positions. He was expected to take place in the Lakers earlier group workout, but cancelled unexpectedly.

Friday’s workout is expected to be another large group workout, much like the one they held before, and the Lakers are still working to schedule more prospects for that day.

Workouts like these allow the Lakers to see how the top prospects match up against each other, and also gives them a chance to gauge the competitiveness of the players.

It’s good that smart’s been invited back again for a second workout. Hopefully that means the lakers are taking a good hard look at him and are seriously considering drafting him. I see smart as being a franchise player for the lakers for years to come and I think that he will be a candidate for rookie of the year as well. Although recently I have been hearing the magic have been linked to him saying that they are very impressed with him, hope that isn’t true. So hopefully smart can impress once again in his workout and make the lakers fo that he would be a perfect fit for them and kobe as well.

If The Magic Are Really Looking At Smart, Then Exum Can Slip But Will Likely Slip Pass The Jazz(Vonleh)& And The Celtics Could Trade Their Pick For Klove& they might take randle, Then We Have Exum, Gordon or Smart To Take

      • jeremy

we wouldnt have smart to take if magic took him.

      • VillainKing

I think Magic will get Exum and I hope Lakers will get Smart..

        • Jack

I hate to say; but I believe that Magic will take him first; they also want him and they’re better positioned than us; but that’s not the worst; the worst is that with Embiid outside of the top 3; everything is complicated for us; and I’m thinking that instead of choosing Randle; it would be better to trade the pick together with Sacre to the Suns for Alex Len and the picks 14 and 18. Then choose Elfrid Payton and Kyle Anderson with the picks.

Hopefully Smart still available at #7

      • VillainKing

        Hopefully buddy..

My current draft hopes are this i want Philly to get so pissed off that Andrew Wiggins is gone that they trade the #3 pick out of anger to the Lakers for the #7 pick and Kendall Marshall,Ryan Kelly,Robert Sacre and future picks in 2015 Second Round Pick and 1 2019 First Round Pick and a 2021 First Round Pick and cash $6 million dollars then Philly can draft Noah Vonleh and still have the #10 pick to get another good player. With the #3 pick the Lakers can have a serious choice of who they really want.Choices would likely be Jabari Parker who Kobe would love and approve of since he is NBA ready and clear favorite to win rookie of the year also Dante Exum could be the other choice but clearly it’s a major upgrade.

well lakers would have to sign kelly and marshall in order to do that and trading scare would make us only having 2 players plus the rookie. i wouldnt trade scare because he cheap and he not that bad of a back up

      Keep hoping lol

It will be a mistake if Randle is available and they pass on him, mark my word.

  • numb1lakefan

i too thought of elfrid payton being a laker and then resigning nick young. having 2 nick youngs would be crazy but that would be plan b

  • VillainKing

Marcus Smart show your talent and skill to the Lakers..

  • numb1lakefan

orlando is not passing on exum 6’6 pg nope

doug mcdermott, is a great shooter, remix of kyle korver/mike miller.
2 players LAL must draft if available is 1.SMART. and 2. DOUG MCDERMOTT, an excellent shooter!!

  • ryan

too bad were not getting Smart cause of the injury to Embiid…

  • ryan

Ill take Elfrid Payton here at #7 another great on ball defender 6’4 and extremely quick, needs to develop a shot but he’s a Rondo type player who would be great for Kobe.

  • drew

The average fan probably doesn’t know who Elfrid Payton is because he went to a smaller school (Louisiana-Lafayette), but he is the best option for the Lakers at #7. First off, his game is very similar to Rajon Rondo, long arms, pass-first point guard who can get to the rim and free-throw line. He is the better fit to play alongside Kobe. Secondly, most people don’t realize he was the NCAA Defensive Player of the Year last season (the kid averaged 2.3 steals, and keep in mind he’s only 20 right now). Last year, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.3 steals while shooting .509% from the field. He will be a triple-double threat every night in the NBA. If you have the chance to pick a 20 year-old version of Rondo, you do it. Plus he won’t shove the fans in the stands.

I thought, that I am the only one who think that the kid should be our pick.
