Matt Barnes to Have High School Jersey Retired

According to the L.A. Times Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes will have his Del Campo High School jersey retired in Sacramento on Wednesday.

Barnes, who wore number 32 for his high school basketball team, also played on the Del Campo football team as well. Barnes mentioned that he considered a career in professional football before accepting a scholarship to play basketball at UCLA.

The current Laker, who has played for a number of teams around the league in his career, earned All-American, all-state, all-CIF, all-city and all-league honors during his time in high school athletics.

Barnes’ stat line from his junior and senior years playing varsity basketball were fairly impressive. Over those two seasons Barnes put up great statistics in points, (26.5, 30), rebounds (12.5, 10), blocks (5.6, six), assists (5.5, three) and steals (three, five).*

After a successful high school career Barnes went on to have four very successful seasons for UCLA before being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies as the 46th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Barnes bounced around the league for most of his eight-year career before settling in Los Angeles to play with the Lakers.
