Over the past few months, the speculation surrounding the immediate future of superstar Carmelo Anthony has really started to ramp up. The New York Knicks quickly are heading into a downward spiral and may end up losing their biggest star as a result.

One potential destination for Anthony is with the Los Angeles Lakers if he chooses to opt-out of his current deal with the Knicks this summer. Although the Chicago Bulls have emerged as a possible frontrunner if Anthony becomes a free agent, the Lakers will be in the running. The perennial All-Star will a chance to play alongside Kobe Bryant and for a franchise that has won 16 titles, but it might not be enough to lure him in.

Unfortunately, a certain Lakers legend doesn’t seem to be in favor of Anthony coming to Los Angeles. Five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson has been highly critical of the Lakers organization recently and now has urged Anthony to stay in New York through his Twitter account on Sunday:

As one of the few great NBA players able to stay with the same team throughout his entire career, Johnson urging Anthony to stay loyal to the Knicks shouldn’t be all that surprising.

With all the rumors and speculation surrounding Anthony heading to the Lakers this summer, Johnson’s advice has become amplified.

As for Anthony, there’s no telling what he’ll do this summer. The Knicks don’t appear to be on the verge of turning it around this season, leading many to believe he’ll head elsewhere, but anything can happen between now and the moment Anthony is forced to decide to stay or go.

I respect and love Magic, but his statements are not helping the Lakers

    Magic Please shut up!

    • Sam Craig

Magic wants what’s best for the Lakers. He just dosent think sigining Melo would be ideal for the future of the team.

      • BlackMamba_From_Brazil

I understand, but the latest declarations is Magic is only exacerbating the situation the Lakers.

If there is to say something to help and better to be silent

        • Sam Craig

Very true Magic always has an opinion and sometimes it can be polarizing with the lakers interests like with Dwight last year.

        • GM Jack

          1. Magic does not want another old over the hill super star. I agree. Lakers need to be looking to Durant or Cousins. This is nothing personal but, reality of the game. Melo is old, 11 seasons. Melo will have one good season with LA then, we are stuck with paying him Max money with no productions.

    • GM Jack

He is correct. You are not thinking of the future. Magic does not want another old over the hill super star. I agree. Lakers need to be looking to Durant or Cousins. This is nothing personal but, reality of the game. Melo is old, 11 seasons. Melo will have one good season with LA then, we are stuck with paying him Max money with no productions.

  • vdogg

as a laker fan, i don’t want melo anyways. i think we should wait until a year later and possible acquire love and kyrie. in the meantime, get a great draft pick in a deep draft, develop him, get rid of d’antoni and nash.. oh, and sign more bargain FAs like luol deng and kyle lowry.

    • Jan Rey

you expect lowry and deng to be bargain. wow

    • GM Jack

Durant. We are the Lakers go for the best. And, Cousins.

  • Dan Nakamura

It doesnt matter if Carmelo is the best choice. But I think Magic should help his “home” telling the players to go to LA. Ok, it’s all a mess out there. But nothings perfect, and everyone from lakers should help, should stay with the team no matter what. I’m a fan, I’m wacthing all these losses at my tv these days. And I’ll keep doing that. That’s what we gotta do. Sorry about your words, Magic.

    • GM Jack

Magic does not want another old over the hill super star. I agree. Lakers need to be looking to Durant or Cousins. This is nothing personal but, reality of the game. Melo is old, 11 seasons. Melo will have one good season with LA then, we are stuck with paying him Max money with no productions. Melo will not fix Lakers problems. Lakers do not have another star or the supporting cast to win a ring in the next 4 years. By that time, Melo will retire.

Lakers made the big mistake of sighing Nash and Kobe.

If they had not, then, It makes sense to bring in Melo and Bosh or Lebron. And, Keep Gasol at mid lever veteran salary.

  • Bane

I don’t want Melo. I’d rather sit on that money and go for Love or Aldridge after next season, and KD and Westbrook a year or so later. Geez, can you imagine these 2 ball chuckers on the same team? At this stage of their careers, they aren’t changing their stripes anymore. Lakers FO should grow a pair and not be pressured by Kobe, this whole “we’re the Lakers, we have an image to uphold” mantra, and myopic fans who can’t see 5ft in front of their noses.

  • Nick the Quick

Magic is a flip-flopper and Kobe-Laker hater since he left. He first praised the lakers for signing D12 and Nash, then said it was the worse decision ever made. I mean I agree that I don’t want Melo either, but seriously Magic, why don’t you brighten and praise the idea to players to come to LA and not make things harder as it is. Overall, he’s just trying to have Jim Buss fail and turn it over to someone else and he’s trying to prevent Kobe from getting his 6th ring!

  • Sti1lmatic

Melo doesn’t belong in purple n’ gold. I think he’s a good player (like Wade) but not great. Kobe is a great player. LeBron is a great player. Durant is a great player. Wade is a good player and so is Melo.

  • Lakers Fan

I completely agree with Magic. He sees what me and other realistic fans see. Melo is not the person to pair with Kobe. They both are ball stoppers, and demand the ball too much. We can say “Well LeBron and Wade worked, why can’t Melo and Kobe?” Well LeBron is a point-forward, so you can pair him with anybody and it will work. Kobe and Melo are shoot first players, and we all seen how well that worked out for Melo when he had Iverson. They both were averaging 25+ points that a season, but they went home in the first round due to chemistry issues. I’m not knocking Melo cause he is a great scorer, but he is not the right fit with Kobe. Whether he stays in New York and builds his own legacy or goes to the Bulls, he should stay away from the Lakers.

  • Eric

Hey Magic, we love you but maybe you need to keep your focus on the Dodgers for now.

  • Matthew Sutton

I have long been a fan of Magic and viewed him as a hero with great admiration. However, I am growing tired of his comments about the Lakers. Be supportive of the team that gave you everything or just leave it along already

  • LakersHeatBeef

You gotta be kidding me.Oh well free agency was never our strong suit anyhow.

  • Chrmngblly

I agree with Magic. Why would we expect Carmelo to do for the Lakers what he can’t do for the Knicks? What did he do for Denver? OK, when he’s hot, he’ hot, but Anthony is not our leader of the future. He doesn’t have the heart to lead the Lakers.

I would give an arm to have LBJ. Also, LeBron still has to prove he can win without Wade and Bosch. LBJ, Kobe, Kendal Marshall (–I think, surprise!–), with Pau at center, and somebody like Love at the 4—-hell of a team. If only Jim Buss will shut up and let the pros run things….

    • Jack

Well, Melo did drive Karl nuts in Denver. That’s what he did there. He didn’t want to buy into Karl’s philosophy of defense, AND ball movement and spread the floor up and down offense (GEE, that offense remind you all of someone’s offense?). Peole keep laying the blame on MDA on why he and Melo didn’t work in NY, well, Karl, who I’ll say is a much better coach, had issues with the guy himself.

  • Tyrone

So according to some fans here, Magic isn’t allowed to share his opinion, while the rest of you can go on blogs, talk radio, and write emails/letters and all that and just spew venom and vitriol about the team, the players, argue like a bunch of whiny schoolgirls about which FA to sign, and all that? Please.
Magic has earned every damn right to speak his mind about anything Laker related. He gave an honest to goodness opinion. Contrary to what many of you all believe, Magic is STILL the no.1 Laker player of all time in the eyes of many.

  • dailythree

I thank Magic is right and I don’t thank CA would come to the Lakers if they have the same coaching staff I don’t see any big name player coming to the Lakers with this coaching staff that’s this summer and next Love won’t come to play in this type of a system it’s not fit for him so stop putting your hopes up the Lakers will be the same next year if this coaching staff I still here. Yes I been a Lakers fan over 45years

  • vulkanthekrusader

    He’s right, Kevin fucking Love.

  • lakers72

said this the last time magic had negative things to say about the lakers.. ever since he acquired the dodgers he hasnt given any words of encouragement or shown any real support aside from bashing the lakers….

    the statement in his defense,
“As one of the few great NBA players able to stay with the same team throughout his entire career, Johnson urging Anthony to stay loyal to the Knicks shouldn’t be all that surprising.” … i guess since the knicks drafted him and he’s played in NY since he started his nba career right?

following his nonstop bashing of jim buss, i’m sure his advice to melo has something to do with his dislike of the FO. how many championship teams have the lakers built.. how many have the knicks? in the long run i’d still have more faith in the lakers building championship calibre teams then the knicks.
not a huge melo fan, personally i’d go for FA like k. love in 15 if possible… but i’d have to agree with the blackmamba_from_brazil below, Magic please shut up.

    • Terrell

Some of my fellow Laker fans have really gone off the deep end. The hell is the matter with you fools? MDA stays positive in his postgame comments after losses, and what do ya’ll tell him? DON’T TELL US EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHt! THERE’S NOTHING GOOD AND POSITIVE WITH THE TEAM RIGHT NOW ETC ETC…But when Magic has nothing but negative things to say, ya’ll go: SHUT THE F UP MAGIC!!!! IF YOU CAN’T STAY POSITIVE DON’T SAY A WORD ETC ETC….

    • Chrmngblly

Hell. I would pay good money if Magic would run the Lakers. Sorry dude. Magic and I disagree with you. I hated that vagina, Howard, too, and I never thought Bynum would grow up.
Magic is dead right, Jim Buss has to make a move. I think it should be out the door, but if JB would step aside completely and let Magic or Phil take the reigns, that would be OK.
When they failed to trade Howard before the deadline, that was just bad management. It was too big of a risk to take for the franchise. They could have traded him to SAC for cousins and change, easy.
Magic is right. Jim Buss is the first one that has to go. Then consider the coach.

  • Gregory Choa

“As one of the few great NBA players able to stay with the same team throughout his entire career, Johnson urging Anthony to stay loyal to the Knicks shouldn’t be all that surprising.”
I wonder if Magic felt the same way about LeBron in Cleveland…or Chris Bosh in Toronto…I guess not. Magic’s pie-hole has been flapping waayyyyyyy too often for my liking…time to put a lid on it Earvin.

  • loisloves

Magic has a history of bad talking Kobe and the Lakers. I know he is one of the greatest but we all remember as a coach he couldn’t cut it! Why not try supporting the Lakers for a change!

  • Chrmngblly

We need Jim Buss to get out of the way.

  • lakerfan

Kobe, Melo, 1-14 Draft Pick, and The Role players we already have looks dam good…

  • KwonGuerillaCross

    Magic Hates the Lakers now.

    • Sylvia Ross

Magic, does not hate the Lakers. He’s a concerned Laker fan like the rest but of us. It’s frustrating to see the team you love go down the way the Lakers are at this point. jim buss, refuses to listen to anyone and this is the only way he can vent.

  • myJasper

Magic should not discourage anyone from coming to the Lakers. He should talk up the team to prospective players around the world. BTW, baseball is boring. Nuff said.

  • Robert L. I.

I totally agree with Magic. Keep Carmelo away from the Lakers. We don’t need an aging, doesn’t play defense, “Honey Nut Cheerio” slowing down the Lakes.
We already have one ball hog, and that’s enough.

  • GM Jack

    1. Magic does not want another old over the hill super star. I agree. Lakers need to be looking to Durant or Cousins. This is nothing personal but, reality of the game. Melo is old, 11 seasons. Melo will have one good season with LA then, we are stuck with paying him Max money with no productions.
    2. Article keeps on referring to Kobe as some star. He is past being a star. On top tier team Kobe would be coming off he bench for 15 to 20 minutes per game. Marshall is providing more than Kobe or Nash can provide right now.

  • GM Jack
