Latest Update on Lamar Odom and Free Agency

Now that we’ve signed Ron Artest, lost Trevor Ariza & the G.O.A.T. – Phil Jackson – has passed his medical exams to clear his way to return as the Lakers Coach next year, the main focus of Lakers Nation is to see what the candy man, Lamar Odom is going to do.

Lamar10MRequestThe word coming from Lamar Odom’s camp “sources” is that Lamar is looking for a contract of about $10M a year, which is a $1.4 Million dollar decrease from last year’s salary. The Lakers are already $10M into the luxury tax, so if we do sign Lamar, we’re not only paying him $10M for his contract, but an additional $10M in taxes. I know it’s not fair to say that we’re paying $20M to sign Lamar, but in a sense, we are.

Some things to consider are before you pay Lamar his $10 Million a year. I know he brings the intangibles and all that, but let’s come off the high of winning a Championship a little bit and look at the facts this year.

1) Lamar was getting paid $14.1 Million to come off the bench. I know he was used as a starter part of the season because of Drew’s injury, but Lamar averaged:

  • 29.7 Minutes a Game (compared to 37 & 36 Minutes by Kobe & Pau)
  • Shot 49% from the field, which is his second best mark of his career, but came on his 3rd lowest Shot Attempt total in his 10 year career (not counting injured years).
  • Average Box Score: 11.3 Pts | 8.2 Rebounds | 2.6 Assists | 1.0 Steals | 1.0 Blocks
  • Played one truly great month in February when he carried the Lakers with victories over Cleveland and Boston on the road. Should have been named player of the month in my opinion.
  • With that being said, Lamar is notorious as one of the most inconsistent players in the league.

2) Now that we take a look at what everyone has been saying is Lamar’s “Coming Out” season, the 2009 NBA Playoffs. Looking through my purple and gold glasses, I do have to say that Lamar seemed to come through in clutch situations and really made his mark in key moments – i.e. guarding the inbounds pass for Trevor to make those key steals, the dunk over Chris Anderson and playing through pain after landing hard in the Houston series. With that being said, I took off my glasses and looked at the numbers. I know they don’t tell the whole story, but they do say something:

  • 32.3 Minutes a Game (compare to 40.9 & 40.6 minutes by Kobe & Pau)
  • Shot 52.4% from the field on the 3rd most shot attempts on the team behind Kobe & Pau.
  • Average Playoff Box Score: 12.3 Pts | 9.1 Rebounds | 1.8 Assists | 0.7 Steals | 1.8 Blocks

Now you have to remember, all these numbers usually come against the opposing team’s second unit and also in crunch time.

Also, one thing you have to consider is how important is Lamar relative to the rest of the team? Should he be getting this much love right now? I truly believe we have to watch out how much we spend now, so that we don’t price ourselves out when Pau’s contract is up in a couple of years. To me, the Spainard truly deserves a max contract because he comes to play every day and puts up the numbers to earn it.

If you want my honest opinion at this point, Lamar’s not worth $10M a year. If we sign him at this price, he will definitely be the highest paid, but best “never will be an all-star” player in the league.

BUT, worth is a relative term and as we saw that with Ron Artest signing for $6M a year which then set the market for Trevor to sign for $5.8M a year after his demands for a $7-9M a year contract.

So, with that being said, Lamar’s main competitor in the market was Hedo Turkoglu who just pulled a Carlos Boozer and recanted his verbal agreement with the Portland Trailblazers for a $10M a year contract to sign with the Toronto Raptors for something around $10.6M a year.

Both Hedo and Lamar are 6’10 Multi-Position Players. Both Players are 30 years old and are looking to cash in on their last big contract of their career. Both Players are coming off a NBA Finals run.

Hedo just set the market and I don’t think it is going to help the Lakers with their contract negotiations. The only chance we have is to compare Hedo’s numbers with Lamar’s numbers:

Hedo Turkoglu – Average Box Score 16.8 Pts | 5.3 Rebounds | 4.9 Assists | 0.2 Steals | 0.8 Blocks on 36 Min/Game

Lamar Odom – Average Box Score: 11.3 Pts | 8.2 Rebounds | 2.6 Assists | 1.0 Steals | 1.0 Blocks on 29 Min/Game

OK, the Lakers have no chance in negotiating a contract through numbers! The only other team out there that can offer Lamar with Championship hopes and a comparable salary are the Portland Trailblazers, who are the ones that just got hosed by Hedo.

For the Lakers to come out winners – It all comes down to Lamar wanting to stay in Los Angeles and giving us a Hometown Discount like he said he would earlier in the season.

For Lamar to come out a winner – Considering the economy this year, he might just have to take a $7.5 Million One Year Offer, then tap into next year’s spending spree where teams will be courting the services of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki and Amare Stoudemire, just to name a few.

So, this is the situation right now! You’ve got your ulcer medicine ready? This is going to be another tough few days for Lakers Nation!

*Update – ESPN C. Broussard reports that the Lakers are going to offer Lamar a 3 year $24-$25M contract*

I can’t believe Adam Morrison gets paid that much. I’m just saying.

    • Gary

That’s the money he gets for being a top Lottery pick a few years ago. I know it’s totally BS, but that’s what we traded for last year to get some Salary Cap relief. He’s going to be a valuable trade asset for us as the year goes by! Also, he was really a great player at Gonzaga, so let’s give him a chance to learn the system. I really think he’s a systems sort of player and what better system than the Triangle?

      • http://paiki.com.mx Wookie

I think that Morrison can become a pretty good player. He has the potential, and if he’s given a chance, he’ll probably help down the road. He needs to recover his confidence, and he probably will, being surrounded by such a great group of players. Just give them the chance to play, and if not, we can always trade him and maybe Sasha for another versatile bench player.

Odom deserves at least 8 mill on 3 years.

He brings SO MUCH that doesn’t show up on the stats. He’s a great rebonder, he’s our Bynum insurance, he can defend the 3 and 4, he can play the 2,3,4. He creates mismatches with other teams.

If we don’t pay Lamar, we don’t win the title!

We sold our draft picks for 6.5 million dollars and got Ron Artest for VERY CHEAP….we need to pay Odom his dues, give him 8-9 mill for 3 years…We saved money by getting Artest and getting rid of the Draft picks…now use that to get Odom back no matter what.

Buss is willing to pay to win and I expect he will. The Finals run brought in huge amounts of revenue…Also Mitch will probably get someone to take Morrison’s expirer or Sasha’s ugly contract. It’s all good.

As for Gasol, who the hell is going to give a 31-32 year old a max contract? unless it’s Kobe/Bron it doesn’t happen!! Gasol will probably get about 12 million a year on the next contract.

The Mavs and Knicks had a payroll VERY similar to this in the ast few years and they weren’t winning jack sh!t…we win AND we pay!!

    • Gary

Yes, Odom is a very versatile player and should be better than Pau given all his talents, but the guy needs to play every day! Gasol has a game that’s going to last a very long time in this league because it’s based on fundamentals, so if not the max contract, then something very close. He’s going to be carrying our team while Kobe winds down his career and Drew starts winding up his career.

Lamar was integral in the regular season and during the championship playoff run. He has been in the center of all those team “bounces” before the game. Disregarding his stats – and I don’t know how you could ignore them, especially his awesome postseason numbers – he brought an intangible element to the team that worked. Now that they have Artest, I’ll concede things have changed in terms of what the Lakers (and fans) think they need to repeat. It would be a huge loss if he were to go, much more so than Trevor. If he’s willing to take the pay cut, I say he’s worth 10 Mil. But it’s not my wallet when you factor in the Luxury Tax. nervous days indeed

    • Gary

Yes . . I agree on the intangibles! What price do you put on that? I just don’t know.

Now we have to see how much Lamar loves LA! Remember KB24 is looking for a 3yr extension. Lamar should sign 3yr 8.5mil and let’s go get this next ring! As good as Portland is Lamar will not put them over the hump! I love LO I hope he stays. His skills are unmatched when he shows up!

Thanks for this great info. I agree Lamar brings the intangibles and had a good playoff season, love the guy, think he wants to stay and all of that.

But it’s this ‘when he shows up’ flaw that earns him less than $10Mil, in my opinion. Lamar can have some truly forgettable games, low blood-sugar notwithstanding.

If only we could dump someone like Sasha!

In a perfect world, I saw A3za and LO wearing the purple and gold next year. TA was one of my favs and I am terribly sad to see him go. Though he was an integral member of the team, the Laker brass chose not to pay him more than the MLE. It came down to simple economics. All along Lamar Odom was the key free-agent. He deserves a contract of 8 to 9mil a year. Here are my reasons. He is the ‘heart and soul’ of the Lake Show. Andrew Bynum showed flashes of the player he might be in two maybe three years but the ‘elephant in the room’ is his physical durability. In the here and now, next to Kobe and Pau, LO is a critical and vital member of the Lake Show inconsistency issues aside. He’s a human version of a Swiss Army knife. How vital was he as a starter when Drew went down with his second knee injury and later coming off the bench when #17 time and time again got in early foul trouble? LO’s size and versatility made him a tough match-up in the playoffs and Finals. He was also a valiant warrior showing cajones when he continued to play after the terrible fall against Houston. Laker tv announcer Stu Lantz said it best throughout the season, as LO goes, so do the Lakers. We’re the NBA Champions, need anymore be said?

Lamar was paid 11 million last season. 10 million may be what Lamar meant by a “discount”.

    • Gary

      really? i thought it was $14.1 Million . . . double check?

This is, by far, the best article I’ve read about LO. I absolutely love the guy, he’s a total team player. He seems shy & doesn’t like the limelight, so Gasol being #2 worked perfectly for Lamar.
About Bynum, his contract is sealed – no discussion. I’m not sure why everyone wants to get rid of Sasha & not Walton. As for Morrison, geez, in this market that $6mil is a LOT for a guy that did nothing all season.
I’ll be extremely upset if LO leaves, he’s my favorite player. (I didn’t say he’s the BEST player) Let’s hope his friendship w/Kobe & Artest will persuade him to stay. Also, if he goes to Portland are they probably going to win a ring? NO. I can’t imagine that won’t cross his mind.
The Lakers need him & LO needs the Lakers; he’s their 6th man & fills many positions. When the guy is on, he’s ON. Bottom line – Lamar take the $25mil for 3 years.
Again, excellent article – completely helped me explain what’s going on behind the scene. Thank you
