Lakers’ Steve Nash Says Soccer Was ‘My First Love’

stevenashshowdownAfter trying out for Inter Milan on Tuesday, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash talked about his passion for soccer via Roger Bennett of ESPNFC.com:

“It was my first love. My first word was goal. I loved playing as a kid. I’m a huge fan. I go home, I watch soccer. I can’t get rid of it. It’s just been a lifelong passion for me.”

Nash’s father and brother both became professional soccer players further igniting his passion for the game.  Although Nash ultimately chose to pursue basketball, his passion for the sport never died leading the veteran point guard to try out for Inter Milan, despite not physically being at 100 percent.

At the age of 39, the eight time NBA All-Star point guard is nearing the end of his career in the NBA with only two years left on his current contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. After an injury plagued season in Los Angeles, Nash will attempt to bounce back during the 2013-14 NBA season in order to reclaim his form as one of the best in the league at his position.

The Lakers’ front office addressed the aging backcourt during the off-season bringing back two-time NBA champion Jordan Farmar with a one-year deal. Farmar will likely be sharing minutes with Nash and Steve Blake to help shoulder the load at point guard moving forward.

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Nash’s body will be able to hold up over the course of next season. Retirement has become a topic of discussion for Nash over the past few weeks, but he’s been adamant about his intentions to play out his contract with the Lakers rather calling it quits after next season.
