Lakers Rumors: Tom Thibodeau, Carmelo Anthony Both Headed To Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Lakers likely won’t make a final decision on a new head coach anytime soon. The storied franchise will continue to weigh options with the NBA draft lottery approaching on May 20 and the 2014 NBA draft to follow soon on June 26.

Even though the team is in no hurry to hire a new head coach, one name has surfaced as a possibility that could potentially be a game-changer for the struggling franchise. The Lakers still need to be granted permission to talk to Tom Thibodeau, but reports have surfaced that GM Mitch Kupchak and company are expected to pursue the Chicago Bulls head coach.

Interestingly enough, free-agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony and Thibodeau have something in common sharing the Creative Arts Agency. David Haugh of The Chicago Tribune speculates that the agency would prefer to have both clients in Los Angeles:

The longer Thibodeau stays silent, the more people will suspect he has interest in the Lakers or was aware of the rumor being floated — which might be unfair but part of the perception-is-reality world in which we live. It only took two phone calls on this story before a league source wondered whether Creative Arts Agency — which represents Thibodeau and free-agent Carmelo Anthony — would prefer their clients collaborate in Los Angeles instead of Chicago.

With Anthony expected to opt out of his deal with the New York Knicks this summer, Chicago has been considered a likely destination for the superstar. The Knicks will have their shot to re-sign Anthony with Phil Jackson giving him his best sales pitch, but the Lakers may be able to draw Anthony to Los Angeles with Thibodeau in the fold.

At this point in time, there’s no telling what will happen during the off-season for the Lakers. A new head coach needs to be hired while also trying to fill out the roster with only three players under contract for next season with Kobe Bryant, Robert Sacre and Steve Nash set to return.

The Lakers bringing in Anthony and Thibodeau is far-fetched. It may be nothing more than a pipe dream, but anything is possible moving forward with Mike D’Antoni no longer an obstacle.

PHIL JACKSON IS OVERRATED!! COACHED KOBE BRYANT AND MICHAEL JORDAN CMON MAN!

    • kookiebuger

Did Phil make the players or did the players make Phil?

  • Daryl Peek

This question is for all who seem to believe only Phil Jackson can save the Lakers, be it as HC or in the FO. Can someone please show me the instance of a great HC proceeding the assimilation of elite player talent in the building of a dynasty in any sport?

I could be proven wrong here but as a sports fan since 1976, owners and GM’s in PROFESSIONAL team sports always assembled talented rosters first and in most cases great head coaches manifested off the collective efforts of said elite talent winning. This is why coaches like Phil and Doc Rivers only like to lead teams with elite talent. The early lesson they learned is without elite talent you will not stand a chance to achieve the ultimate goal of the last man standing in front of the commissioner in June.

This is the same point I keep making. The Lakers have always built championship rosters before hiring a coach to lead them to a banner. Ever championship-winning coach in franchise history won the title in his first season with the team. Clearly, you need to build the roster first, but the coach is critically important when it comes to winning those 7-game series against other talented teams.

      • Daryl Peek

As I always contended, the player talent is of more importance. Great/elite coaching helps sustain and keep dynasties going longer. good coaching can win a championship or two… see Westhead, Rudy T., Larry Brown, Jack Ramsey, ETC… the list of dynasty great HC’s is a very short one. Is Spoelstra a dynasty elite HC without LeBron? Stan Van Gundy would’ve won in 06 with that roster Riley took over IMO. Del Harris would’ve broke through and eventually won with those Lakers he groomed for Phil in the late 90′s but Phil gave them the confidence to three-peat. That’s the difference an elite HC can make.

This is the worst type of journalism. Throw out a completely unfactual headline and prove it’s complete BS with no concrete evidence in the article, thus the cop out at the end. Where do they get these guys?

I’ve been a Lakers fan since ’91 … and this is what I think should happen… tell me what you guys think… DO NOT BRING IN THIBS.. INSTEAD… BRING IN GEORGE KARL! … With Karl then brings melo… melody had his best seasons under Karl in Denver. Its been stated that melo never had a problem with his coach in Denver, it was the personnel around him with the small Denver market. But now in LA.. that should not be a problem. Karl is a respectable coach that Kobe shouldn’t have a problem with playing with.. and at least one of your stars are familiar with.. in karl’s system. U needed a skilled center on the block like (Nene).. but pau is a bit better.. a rebounding PF (Kenyon martin, Kenneth faried)– something we could get in FA , a melo at the SF .. a shooter that don’t mind shooting like (Jr smith).. and I think Kobe is 5 million times better in that spot .. and a quick starting PG..like (Lawson..) meanwhile we could have farmer or maybe a kyle Lowry in FA. Thibs will not put equal attention to the offensive side of the ball thus making us look like a mike brown coached lakers team..(and we all remembered how that turned out) …. go get karl from ESPN… and put him as our next coach….

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I don’t remember the exact numbers I researched last week, but I think Karl has been to the postseason 22 times and been knocked out in the first round 14 times. He’s gotten past the second round three times. No thanks. And Melo’s record is about the same…

      • Wally Wallace

Yeah.. but thats every coach who was in the west with the spurs and Lakers both winning multiple championships… we all would have that same record..Lol the good thing is the postseason opportunities… which means he could at least get us there.. and with a better assembled team.. he would he great… and you got remember the system he ran.. with the mediocre players he had… (let’s remember.. he gave the Lakers a run for their money in the series a couple of years ago with a horrible McGee, non scorer in varied.. slow Andre miller… and a sometimey corey brewer…. with no more pieces on the bench to help.. all he had that was consistent was Lawson…. (its just a thought tho)

One finals appearance in 22 tries is all I need to know. That is way too much failure on one resume for my liking.

In order for the FLakers to get Carmela Anthony, they gon hafta give up Kobe Bryant.

    • kookiebuger

      1. Melo is a free agent not a restricted
      2. Nobody wants a 30 year old, ball hogging,no playing defense Melo on their team.

  • KING HARVEY

You would have to be an absolute idiot to think Thibs who is in a 4 year contract and has told the media countless times the bulls is is where he is at and how many times he has told the media he loves his team and wouldnt wanna coach any other one

then the bulls saying “WE HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM LA ABOUT THIBS NOR WILL THEY LET LA TALK TO THIBS”

if you believe that thibs will leave a team with like 5 first round draft picks
a younger team ready to play a system he has established in a place where he has stated

“I WANTED CHICAGO MORE THEN THEY WANTED ME”

with rose noah and gibson havinga father like relationship with him

    YOUR A FUCKING IDIOT LMAOOOOOOOOO

WHY DO KNICKS AND LAKERS FANS ALWAYS THINK DRAMATIC LAND SCAPE CHANGE IS GONNA HAPPEN EVERY YEAR LOL

if anything yall missing the dramatic not so great things thats happen to the lakers recently

  • AJ

Picking up Thibodeau as the new head coach is a BAD IDEA, the Lakers are historically not a defensive minded team, they need defense, but he will push them too much on the defensive end. We need a coach that knows how to generate a half court offensive game.

that is not go happen because he’s coaching team that had the chance of making the playoffs every year and for him to leave to coach a team that is the rebilling make no sense to me and about Carmelo Anthony forget that he is not going to team rebilling he wants a championship now and plus it can make more money here than anywhere else in new york

If they give CA a max deal then it will be Kobe (if he is healthy) and CA and a bunch of guys on mimimum contracts and they won’t be a contender. I don’t think CA will take a big discount when Kobe is getting so much. If a star player is going to take a discount to play w/ another star then he probably expects the other star do do the same (like Miami). Lakers will not contend until Kobe’s contract expires and then they have to stop giving out max contracts and try to get players who will take a discount to contend and try to make up for it with endorsements. Not sure if Buss gets this.
