Last night, Mitch Kupchak spoke about the Los Angeles Lakers being ready to go all out for big time free agents this summer. One of the biggest names available is Carmelo Anthony.

While there had been questions about whether or not the Lakers would be able to meet with Anthony, it now looks as if the Lakers will be one of the teams Anthony meets with. And according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears, Anthony hopes to make his decision the second week in July:

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony hopes to make a decision on where he will play next season in the second week of July after taking several free-agent visits, a source told Yahoo Sports [...] A source said there is currently no frontrunner for Anthony’s services, and he is expected to meet with the Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks.

This is excellent news for the Lakers. While they do not have the immediate roster in place like the Bulls or Rockets, he and Kobe Bryant are good friends and Bryant has already reached out to his fellow Olympian.

With the selection of Julius Randle in last night’s draft, the Lakers have already begun their climb back to title contention and the addition of Anthony would greatly accelerate that process.

Nothing is for certain at this point and the Lakers will have to do an excellent job of convincing Anthony that Los Angeles is the right place for him, but the team appears to at least have a spot at the table.

Couple days ago Melo wasn’t going to meet with the Lakers, now he is. Soon Lakers will be stronger contenders to land him

    • Mikael Wihlborg

Can’t wait to see what happens!

    • comrade24

Hoping we can get Melo. The Mavs and Kings have already gotten better this offseason. The race to the playoffs will be even tougher this season, we need a proverbial slam dunk in free agency if we want to compete this season. Randle is going to give us some grit and much needed inside presence, now we need a 1st/2nd option on offense and Melo would be perfect

      • Zimmeredge

Mavs maybe kings they screwed up their draft.

      • LaDone Waller

I agree 200%. Randle was a great pickup and Like you said, everyone else seems to have improved their rosters so now it’s our turn. Melo with another top free agent would be ideal but Melo along with Bosh wouldn’t be bad as long the Money made sense.

    • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

You never know! Mitch always finds ways to surprise everyone. Nobody expected the Lakers to land Nash 2 years ago. Anything is possible.

      • Al Haldie

This is really funny last yr everone was saying {get rid of mitch – him and jimmy buss} they are all so stupid–now this yr we are hearing how great they are—they are either good or bad – which one is it and lets all get on the same page – we are either LAKERS FANS or just making trouble…

        • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

I’ve always liked Mitch, and I think everyone has.
          Jim Buss, not so much.

    • Tune

No, it was said he wouldn’t see Lakers July 1st. It was just click bait.

    • Jim213

Nah, there’s more to this than meets the eye. Back at the start of the season rumors where rampant that Melo wanted to join the Lakers in FA. Although, it looked doubtful given the team’s situation (cap), rumors months later came out that the Lakers weren’t too interested in Melo given #24.

But K Love looks to be out of the picture now as don’t believe the offense will run as reliably once #24 retires and if FO waits to try to acquire a reliable offensive scorer they’re gambling on a future as opposed to the present. Don’t see Durant in LA down the road but best to make the most of the situation rather than risk all or nothing in future belief.

Melo will strongly consider the Lakers but FO has to place a competitive team on the floor to increase their odds IMO. I’d also sell the Lakers marketing global ability and let Jeanie schedule some trips next year to Brazil and a few other South American countries as Kobe will likely do to promote his and the Lakers brand more given the big fan base there (per one of #24s recent WC interviews). But IMO it still comes down to building a strong starting lineup to contend.

      • comrade24

They should go after Lowry and a center on July 1st before they even meet with Melo, let him be the missing piece. Since Lebron is wishful thinking to begin with, it might be a wise strategy to leak to the media that the Lakers will not pursue Lebron, and are all in Anthony.

        • Jim213

Being that Lowry will likely go for $9+ mil don’t think he’d be available for the Lakers and what is needed for next season tho the 1 needs to be addressed for the long term.

Which also goes for the 5 but if Pau returns he’d be buying FO a few more years. But there’s FA and possibly a non drafted prospect that can help the team fill this need hopefully. Players can’t sign until 7/10/14 once the cap has been set as FO still has a strong possibly given melo’s ties which apply to business in LA too IMO.

          • Clarkkent113

I think if get Melo we skip Lowry – at least we should. Lowry will be looking for multiple years and we need to keep as much cap as possible for 2015 and 2016 FAs.

But I could see us maybe going after Monroe if Pau doesn’t resign on the cheap with us. In either case we got Marc Gasol and Noah coming up in FA soon so we could offer a big contract to one of them (not max obviously). Westbrook is a FA in 2017, but that’s so far aware we can’t plan around that.

          • Jim213

M Gasol would work out but I’d prefer Anthony Davis tho that’s far down the line (2017/2018) but hear he’s added muscle this off season too.

          • Clarkkent113

Well Davis is an RFA in 2016 so yea we’re looking at a looong wait until we can sign him. He’ll eventually be the next great Laker big though, count on it.

          • jared

anthony davis by far… he would be a great look when his contract is up

  • jay

July is going to be crazy lol

  • Isaiah Leon

I honestly want Trevor Ariza over Melo badly

    • cyborgspider

Cheaper, unselfish, hits the open 3s and plays defense. Plus he’s a local boy and a champion. Makes sense :)

      • Isaiah Leon

Couldn’t agree anymore. He will have a better impact for the Lakers than Melo. Kobe would love to have Ariza back and the fans will surely do to

      • box5

Can’t get his own shot, wall made ariza last year, y’all tripping with this back to the past stuff, if ariza is smart he will ride that wall train cause he’s never had that many open shots at no time in his career, and we need a guy who can get his own shot other than kobe and Nick young (who’s strictly a bench player) Yell

        • Isaiah Leon

You sound dumb. Ariza can creat his own shot

    • Truth B Told

May get both…….Trevor said he would not mind returning to the Purple and Gold…..Washington will be seeking to resign him though.

      • Isaiah Leon

Washington could but they have Webster and Porter at the 3 but you never though. And glad Trevor wouldn’t mind coming back

    • Dat Boi Drew

Hell yea… like I wouldnt be mad if we get Melo but I would perfer Ariza over Melo… plays defense… hits da 3… unselfish player… & key thing MUCH CHEAPER

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

You can’t count 3-point shooting. Both players have hit 39% over the last two years. And Melo creates his own shots.

        • Isaiah Leon

Did you see Ariza during the season? He had a career year especially in 3 point shooting and defense. He was killing it.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

So did Melo. Ariza shot 40.7% and Melo shot 40.2%. There is merit to both guys, but no one in the league would put these guys in the same category. There’s a reason Melo earns four times as much money as Ariza.

      • Isaiah Leon

Totally agree with you plus Ariza was and still is a fan favorite

        • LaDone Waller

That would be the cheaper route and if we were to do that, we would possibly be able to sign another mid-level role player along with him.

    • Al Haldie

Ariza played for the LAKERS a few yrs back and walked away from them – I never did understand that – but I don’t know if he would come back, but it would be great if he did…..

    • J Taylor

wow….. we should all be glad you don’t run the team.

      • Isaiah

Hey know one cares about your opinion because I bet you don’t know crap about what the Lakers need. If you’re one of those Laker fans that want Melo playing in LA then you’re stupid. Melo doesn’t mix well with the lakers. He has zero defense and is lazy on the defensive side. You can only rely him on scoring. So we should all be glad you don’t run the team.

  • J24

So what would a lineup for the Lakers with Melo for next year look like:

    PG: J Farmar/ J Clarkson/ S Nash/ (maybe) K. Marshall
    SG: K Bryant/ K Bazemore/ X Henry
    SF: C Anthony/ N Young/ K Bazemore
    PF: J Randle/ J Hill/ R Kelly
    C: ??? / M Gortat/ G Monroe/ R Sacre/ (maybe) P Gasol

I’d like to see C Kaman back, but after the way Dumbtoni used him last year, and the FO not sticking up for him, I’m sure he won’t =/

Also I’d like to see Byron Scott as Head Coach. I feel he knows how to use the players to their strengths just like Pop, but only time will tell who LA’s FO goes with.

    • Dead

i really hope they stretch Nash or trade him, he is of no value to the lakers in his current health situation

      • comrade24

Although now he does have value as a mentor now that we have a young pg prospect.

        • Dead

true although i would still rather have bledsoe or both melo and bronbron if all the stars aline

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

As long as there is no longer a salary cap, why not add Lebron and Eric Bledsoe as well?

  • Jack

This is the team I wanna see next season:

    PG: Lowry; Clerkson; Nash
    SG: Kobe; Henry; Bazemore
    SF: Melo; Turner; Johnson
    PF: Randle; Hill; Kelly
    C: Gasol; Sacre.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

You’re way over the cap there.

    • Truth B Told

We have to keep Farmar and just maybe we can get Ariza back.

    • Dat Boi Drew

My dream scnerio I rather see
PG: Lowry OR Bledsoe; Nash; Farmer; Kendall
      SG: Kobe; Henry; Bazemore
SF: Trevor Ariza, Johnson, Nick Young
      PF: Randle; Hill, Kelly
      C: Monroe, Pau Gasol, Sacre
The problem with that somebody would have 2 be waive… I would choose outta Sacre or Kelly, and Pau & Monroe would start Randle be 6th man but with Nick Young it be minutes problem but dass gd thing 2 have

    • Clarkkent113

Only problem is that ties up most of our cap-space and we take ourselves out of the running for 2015 and 2016 FAs, UNLESS we get Lowry and Pau on 1-2 year deals (unlikely for Lowry, possible for Pau though).

  • vdogg

how about darren collison as a starting PG? solid vet, looking for a starting job, won’t take too much salary… thoughts?

    • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

Darren would be a nice back up plan if all else fails.
I hope they go after Lowry first. He doesn’t demand much salary either.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

He would be one of about 100 options better than Marshall or Clarkson.

    • Zimmeredge

Too much of a ball hongre. Cańt play off ball unfortunately.

  • PhilJackson’sArrogance

    From NY Daily News:

““We haven’t come to that,” Jackson said when asked if he and Anthony’s
representatives have discussed a max contract. “But the perception is we
want Carmelo to be as interested in winning. When saying he’s
competitive and wants to be on a competitive team to also being able to
demonstrate that if push comes to shove in a situation where he may have
to take a little bit less and we’re more competitive to bring in
another player to help us bring this concept along.””

    1. Phil Jackson is a hypocrite, he never took less money to coach or be a GM/Vice President.

    2. Knowing Phil’s true colors now, I hope punks like Magic and Kobe can stop asking for him to return. As players, the Lakers’s players have enjoyed max deals and more…..Phil does not have the players’ and fans’ best interests. The fans can stop barking for his return as well. As fans, we pay max dollars to run the Lakers, we are not going cheap to get more “Smush Parkers”.

Phil truly does not belong on the Lakers’ Hall of Fame, we want our legacy to be bonded to money, rings, fame and owners such as the Buss who do not talk money in the media to belittle the players. The Lakers made the right choice in letting him go, we do not need some cheap arrogant double standard hypocrisy. Late Dr. Buss let him go the first time due to his arrogance on the money issue.

And, that’s the way ball bounce.

    • cyborgspider

Ok sure you make valid points but the dude still won 5 championships and six with the Bulls. Lakers were going nowhere with Kurt Rambis and Del Harris as coaches. Respect and props for that.

Do I ever want him back as a coach or president? Nah.

      • PhilJackson’sArrogance

Agree, now knowing what he is doing in NY, as a player and the fans of the sport, I do not want him.

He is not worth 12 million dollars a year. I see he does not want to keep Melo for a max contract, then, why screw him over. NY does not want to commit to Melo for 5 years, so he is creating a negative PR for him.

        That is low life.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I’ve never been a Phil fan–despite the championships he helped raise at Staples–but in his defense, his salary has never had any impact on putting a roster together. Melo’s salary does.

    • courtney harris

Phil has a point though. This is a different time than when the lakers spent the house buying championships. The new CBA won’t let that happen. If melo wants the Knicks to be able to contend in that joke of a conference, he will need to take a pay cut. Duncan did it & it tricked down to the rest of the squad. They have a lot of money coming off the books next year if I’m correct. They can re tool a new squad but he has to set the tone.

  • LakersHeatBeef

-The Lakers are always rumored to be in the mix to land top free agents, after awhile you just stop believing it.We could get Carmelo it’s on him.

  • BULL

    • PhilJackson’sArrogance

How much did Nash pay you? Can I get a job with him too?

    • Nalin Shukla

      You have cap locks on

  • Clarkkent113

I’m definitely on board with signing Melo; the ONLY problem is that that then takes us out of the Durant sweepstakes come 2016 and he’s a younger, better player at this point.

Prior to the draft I was thinking that we could sign both Melo now, and Durant in 2016 because all our contracts (aside from our rookie’s and Melo’s would be coming off the book so lots of room to play with). But that was contingent on drafting Marcus Smart to be our PG because we could have moved Melo to the 4, and kept Durant as the 3. But now with Randle we can role with that potential lineup. Make the calculation entirely different. If we get Melo, we’re not getting Durant. But if we pass on Melo, there’s still no guarantee we get Durant, and none of the other FAs in 2015 or 2016 score like Durant and Melo.

Ultimately we probably have to decide to forego the Durant dream in favor of getting Melo now because we’re in a win-now situation with Kobe getting older. That means we need to go hard after a PG and another big in 2015 and 2016. Possibilities include Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Noah, and Hibbert (although I think he’ll be a restricted FA).

Basically, Lakers are kind of at a crossroads here. Melo now or Durant later. Tough call, really tough call.

    • PhilJackson’sArrogance

Nah, Kobe is done by then, Durant will be ready to come to the Lakers in 2016!

      • Clarkkent113

I don’t think so, and I hope not. I think Kobe can, and should, play until 40 (but on the cheap obviously). If Kobe can still put up 23+ ppg into his late 30s he’s still a top SG in the league. Hopefully since the Lakers gave him this last giant contract extension he’ll return the favor by offering to take a Tim Duncan style contract for the rest of his time in LA ($10-12 million/year).

        • Jim213

Durant will be a FA in 2016. Kobe’s contract runs 2014/15 thru 2015/2016. Although, Durant to LA is a long shot but unless some troubles take place within that organization see him staying in OKC.

  • Sti1lmatic

Wish Monte Ellis, Aaron Afflalo, Tony Douglas, Mike Miller, Z’Bo or Kyle Korver were available and on the Lakers radar.

    • Jim213

Lol, gotta roll with what we got tho K Love seems to be out of the picture now.

    • Nalin Shukla

Gordon Hayward is a free agent hopefully he gets a look

      • David Gonzales

I been saying Hayward needs a look but we will have to over pay to get him since Jazz will match with a qualifying offer. Don’t overlook Chandler Parsons as well. 6’10″ SF that can shoot at will and averaged 16.6ppg, 5.5.reb, 4ast. Houston is trying to create cap space and can’t afford him he is only due $960,000 this year and should be getting around 6-8mil a year with those numbers.

  • Collis

Don’t be surprised if Ross and DeAndre Kane don’t make the roster !

  • comrade24

    Pg- Lowry
    Sg- Kobe
    Sf- Melo
    Pf- Randle
    C- Monroe

This starting lineup can compete with any team, bring back the bench players from last season who made and impact and don’t break the bank and I think we have a good shot at competing this season

    • Clarkkent113

That’s a good lineup but it’s not a true contender imho. The problem is we’d get tied up with all those contracts and wouldn’t have any room to maneuver in 2015 and 2016 FA. I think we’d have to choose between Lowry or Monroe at best. I’d prefer Monroe tbh but he’s an RFA and Detroit said they’d match any offer.

Lowry is just too expensive right now. In actuality I could see Pau resigning with us, but I only do that if it’s on the cheap and it’s a 2 year deal max.

  • numb1lakefan

getting melo will allow the lakers to compete with the spurs 3 point shooting..melo,kobe,swaggy,kelly,and hopefully meeks can all get hot were talking show time lakers here

  • numb1lakefan

if we dont get melo or lebron our starting line up will look like this
    lance stephenson

I’m doubting he comes to us. Didn’t Mitch say just a few months ago that they won’t be spending all their money just because they have it? Now he wants to go all out? Hmmm something has happened.

  • Lakers4Life

And yet again I correctly foresee the future. Just a few days ago people were crying about how Melo wasn’t seeing the Lakers on July 1st. Those folks need a nice chill pill.

Hopefully LeBron will be next in line to see the Lakers. Let the alluring begin!

  • Bravo

as much as im liking randle, i hope the lakers can find a way to trade nash and randle for kevin love. the wolves would have to be intrested in replacing love with a young PF thats randle. that IMO would make the Lakers very appealing to LBJ and melo. pretty slim of this happening but if anything i like randle, he could be a championship cornerstone one day

  • dayton

  • Edy

I’m wondering how Mitch is going convince melo with only kobe hitting grandpa status in the nba an a rookie we just barely drafted lol he needs to stop dreaming and just start filling the roster with ariza either Kyle Lowry or Thomas the pg from Sacramento
