Lakers Rumors: Team Likely to Pursue Luol Deng Over Summer?

Luol DengThe Los Angeles Lakers will have a lot of questions to answer this summer as the franchise will look to rebuild for the future.

A lot has been made about the Lakers’ plans for the off-season as many expect the team to go after big name free agents. Stars from Carmelo Anthony to LeBron James have been rumored to be targets, but another player could be more likely to suit up for Los Angeles in 2014-15.

After the Chicago Bulls traded Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Pau Gasol-Andrew Bynum trade talked stopped and fans were left wondering what’s next for the Lakers. Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld believes that Deng’s future may end up with the Lakers and sees the front office going after the small forward this summer.

Deng is a versatile forward and could be considered the Bulls’ best player aside from a healthy Derrick Rose. The former Duke Blue Devil averaged 37.4 minutes per game this season and was trusted by the coaching staff on both ends of the court.

If the Lakers do end up signing Deng, he will instantly become one of the better defensive players on the roster. The forward thrived in coach Tom Thibodeau’s defensive system and the Lakers would surely benefit from having him on the court. Deng can also create his own shot and with Kobe Bryant approaching the end of his career, the team will need someone to take some of the pressure off of Kobe to score.

However, Deng will be 29 in April and although he is not thinking about retirement yet, he only has a few seasons left in his prime. Unlike James or Anthony, who are bonafide stars in the NBA, Deng is not necessarily someone that opponents fear. Yes he is very effective when on the court, but he cannot match the all-around dominance of James or the offensive explosion Anthony can provide.

The new Cavalier will be a coveted free agent this summer and the Lakers could definitely go after him. Deng can certainly make the Lakers a better team, but it is hard to see them turn into title contenders if he is the only major signing they have in the off-season.

    Breaking News!
Lakers FO agree to 3yr deal with Sparklets Water Co. This after lengthy negotiations with Arrowhead Water Co. fail. The two could not come to terms and the deal just died.

We have bigger fish to fry this summer

    • Jim213

Nice but don’t expect too much from this inept FO as history shows. Aside of
that wouldn’t consider neither Deng or Boozer (amnestied ?) come 2014 FA. Deng close to $12-14 mil yr. so … “Lakers to pursue Deng when he becomes an UFA this summer.” ?

I don’t know what to think anymore. At this point I’m just waiting for Kobe. I’m trying to enjoy the last couple seasons he’s in the league before he’s gone for good (retires).

    Fixed

Yeap. The damn problem is rumors only.No credence.

  • Lakers Fan

Of course the Lakers are going to pursue Deng, just like they will pursue Melo(unfortunately), LeBron(if he decides to op out his contract), Monroe, Lowry, Bledsoe(if he doesn’t resign with Phoenix), Hayward, and whoever else that will help the Lakers get out of this hell hole they are in now. This is a rumor we have all heard before and already know.

I don’t see Bledsoe leaving he’s got a good thing going in phoenix i see them getting really good in the next couple years.

I’d love to see a line up next yr looking a little something like this:

Isiah Thomas or Lowry/ Kendal/ Blake
    Kobe/ Meeks/ henry
    Deng or Melo/ Young
Greg Monroe or Andrea Bargnani/ Kelly/ Draft Pick
    Hill/Sacre

Players take a paycut for the two seasons kobe has left and im sure management will repay them down the line for taking a cut the first two yrs

    • kobe24

      Anyone but bargnani lol

    Should
Coach D be more demanding of his players?
Get in their faces and get their attention sometimes when they fail to exercute,
or give necessary effort? See that they
do their jobs the right ways, especially in critical situations and in fourth
quarter? I don’t understand why Chris
Kaman is not playing more in games. He’s experienced, can score and plays tougher
and harder as anyone on defense and around the basket. Would Like to see what
he can do in the right spots in games

The Lakers should be extremely frugal next season because the real prizes will/might be available in 2015. Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo, Marc Gasol, Klay Thompson.

The plan for this summer has to be to sign Luol Deng, but for reasonable price (he is no more max contract player) and PG Kyle Lowry. Then, we have to get solid draft pic and resign Farmar, Meeks, Yong, Henry, Johnson and J.Hill.M.D’Antoni has to go and we have to find the right coach, to work with all this young talents.
For the summer of 2015, our MAIN GOAL has to be to land Kevin Love and possibly, Klay Thompson. Several young FA’s has to be added also, along with one or two draft pics. That is the rebuilding formula for L.A.lakers in the next two years.
