According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Pau Gasol will strongly consider returning to the Lakers:

“While free-agent forward Pau Gasol grew tired of the persistent trade rumors that followed him for the better part of the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, he would give strong consideration to re-signing with the team, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.”

Despite all the trade rumors, Gasol has a strong relationship with Kobe Bryant and believes the new coaching staff would prioritize him more:

“Gasol has strong ties to Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who has advocated for his return, and a deep affinity for Los Angeles and the franchise he won two NBA titles with. While the constant trade rumors stung, Gasol learned to live with them and has a level of expectation that a new coaching staff would prioritize him more than Mike D’Antoni did, sources said.”

After bringing two championships in three straight NBA Finals appearances to Los Angeles, Gasol found himself in a difficult position with constant role changes and trade rumors. However, Gasol was the ultimate professional and now has the opportunity to sign elsewhere.

For Gasol, he has stated numerous times that winning more championships is the biggest priority in the final stages of his career. With numerous teams expected to pursue the talented post player including the Dallas Mavericks and New York Knicks, the Lakers will have to rebuild themselves into championship contenders for Gasol to consider them.

Despite everything that has gone on these past couple of seasons, it seems like both sides are interested in Gasol returning. There is even belief within the organization that re-signing Gasol could lure Carmelo Anthony to Los Angeles to form a Big Three of their own.

Pao gasol the white mamba, stay home with us

    • cj

learn to spell his name right first

Pick it up on defense and maybe you won’t hear constant trade rumors.

  • Zimmeredge

Let’s have Pau and melo. Stop the bullshit non sense crap about melo and lebron. The plan is clear.

    • Al Haldie

      I AGREE…

    • comrade24

this would be a dream come true. Melo +1 other b-list FA and i think given the right coach and defensive system we could actually compete this year.

      • vdogg

        wholeheartedly concur. go lakers!

      • Zimmeredge

Hollins is a good defensive coach although i find him a bit too rigid because he has a conception of bball as a role game meaning if you are not a superstar you have a role to fill and nothing else. So i’m quite scared by him because we have a lot of young talent to develop.
I’ll rather go after mark jackson who’s more open regarding young players and you add a defensive minded coach as an assistant.

  • courtney harris

You get some athletic shooters around gasol (who can play help defense) and I promise you, we will see gasol dominate off offensively. He’s not a great defender but with some quick handed teammates who believe in team defense, I think gasol will end his years as very good laker.

    • Al Haldie

It worked with BYNUM at the 5 – PAU was GREAT…and can still be..

      • courtney harris

All he needs is some help. when he’s getting backed down he just needs someone to reach out and make whomever he’s guarding pick up the ball. Not many can shoot over gasol.

        • Zimmeredge

At the Time Pau was a center piece in d we had players who were able to stay in front of their opponents. Fish, Bryant, ariza/metta odom and Bynum they could Man up against their match up and of course they worker well with each others because they had a very high bball IQ. So they Knew How to trap, to help, rotate, double teams and all. They Knew each other for a long period of Time. The last two season we struggled on d because we had a group of players that changed too many Times
2013: Nash Bryant metta Pau dwight
2014: Nash meeks Johnson kaman gasol

How are we supposed to build any cohesion on o and d? We need to keep Pau. Melo and Bryant Know each others thanks the national team and they played well together.

    • comrade24

Pau’s not as bad of a defender as he looked last year. The problem was team defense was non-existent and perimeter defense was terrible.

      • DKWTTY

        Exactly the case.

      • courtney harris

Exactly but I don’t blame the players. Those who got the most minutes were suppose to come off the bench and be hustle guys (mostly scorers)… Defense needs to be taught first then you can correctly use your efforts to create big play aka steals, blocks etc.. The defense was never stressed upon & therefore the little hustle/effort we got from the lakers was misguided.

That may be more football talk than basketball. Lol

  • Al Haldie

PAU: If you do sign with the LAKERS get NO TRADE in your CONTRACT..

    • courtney harris

      Hell yeah

    • comrade24

i’ve been saying that for a year. The only way Pau should resign is with a no trade clause.

      • Clarkkent113

But the only way I do that if I’m the Lakers is if he agrees to a MASSIVE paycut. We can’t have him eating up a significant portion of the payroll anymore; he should be making less than Tim Duncan going forward (we’re talking in the ballpark of $6-9 million/year). If Gasol agreed to that then I’d happily lock him up to one last long-term contract (say 4 years) with a no-trade clause.

After Kobe’s huge contract comes off the books in 2016 I’d re-sign him at $10-12 million. Both those moves would give the Lakers a lot of breathing room to play around in free agency this year, in 2015, and in 2016. We could go after Melo now, sign him to a near-max, by showing him the short-term rebuilding plan that involves the paycuts to Pau and Kobe.

  • Al Haldie

Let forget JAMES and MELO and go direct to plan B for ARIZA-LOWERY-MONROE and FRYE— and lets play ball… You now have D and OFFENCE…

    • Zimmeredge

I like that lineup. Those guys are young and they can run the court and play some d or hustle Plays. It´s’gonna be hard to have them 4 because three of them will run for a 8-10m contrat. I guess that’s our plan b.

  • Lonnie

Pau Gasol is not the best player ever but keep hi pay him for $7 million per.

  • DKWTTY

STAY PAU!! He just needs to get healthy this summer, he put up 18 and 10 in a bad season when he was injured a lot. He still has a lot to give but I’m concerned that he is playing for Spain in the World Cup this summer. He should do like Ginobili and take time off to heal and restore his body for a long NBA season. Better team defense with quicker guards/forwards who can play D and Pau will be fine!

  • independentbynature

I think Pau would fit in very well along side the bruiser Randle on the front line.

  • GOD Chri$$$

with melo putting up his highest rebounding season in his career, melo/randle/gasol would make the lakers a deadly rebounding team. he posted 17ppg in a terrible system that doesn’t fit him. the lakers should definitely resign him as he can be a key piece on any championship team

    • vdogg

agreed. i feel as if the last two years with d’antoni involved the lakers trying to get out of their own way. we need everyone on the same page — buying in to what the incoming coaching staff is selling. THEN we can rise.

  • Danny Carmona

If we can sign gasol to 8 and melo to about 15 then we’d be set to sign the bench mob back and definite contend

    • vdogg

agreed. GO LAKERS. and btw, kobe on twitter recently re-followed gasol, followed julius randle and followed melo. does the mamba know something we don’t??

  • hookedonnews

Pau may be good for the short-term, but long-term we need a rim protector. He’s still a great offensive player, but he missed 22 games last season and 30+ the year before. That’s probably not going to improve as he gets older. Melo not a great defender, and Kobe’s defense hasn’t been what it once was. If defense wins championships you’re not going that far with this crew.

    • cj

with the right coach u could.

      • hookedonnews

I don’t think Popovich is available, and even he can’t make Kobe & Pau any younger. I’m not sure how coachable Carmelo Anthony is. I guess we’ll find out if he goes to the Bulls. I agree that a coach can make a difference, but you still have to have good defensive players. Maybe we’ll get some, but I don’t think Pau is going to turn into that strong presence in the paint that you need.

  • Clarkkent113

I hope Pau returns, but only if he takes a huge paycut. He can’t be making anywhere close to $19 million anymore.

    • Kobe Gagnon

Phil Jackson is trying to recruit him for under $4mil. Surely we can beat that and both be happy

  • Lakers4Life

He may have a chance at remaining on the Lakers roster next season.if he works on jumping higher than 3 inches this summer.

    • Kobe Gagnon

He needs to jump higher? That’s, odd criticism. . .

  • XDOW

Pau Melo and King James will play with Kobe and JR

    • BULL

LET IT GO SON! SMH GET OFF THAT HORSE YOU RIDING.. MELO IS A MAYBE.. BUT JAMES NOOOO

      • Andrew Perkins

AMEN TO THAT!!!! I DON’T EVERRRR WANT LEBRON JAMES TO BE ASSIGNED TO THE LAKERS!!!!!!!

  • BULL

GASOL WITH RANDAL to me, is a nice combination! Gasol is still top 5 skilled center in todays game! might can defend well, but last time check, Kevin Love, have no defense either, but he makes it up with rebounds, so that is what Gasol will have to do! with those two in the back court, Hopefully Hill and Kelly backing them up the bigs will look nice.. Now its time to chase Melo, or Ariza, or Deng.. we need an elite Small fwrd. and get Young, Famar, Meeks and Wesley back.. LETS DO THIS LAKERS .. idk about Lowry or Bledsoe, that’s a lonnggg shot!
