While there are reports the Oklahoma City Thunder are the front runner for Pau Gasol, there is belief he will stay if the Lakers sign Carmelo Anthony according to Los Angeles Times’ Mike Bresnahan:

If Anthony eventually chooses the Lakers, they feel they have a good chance of bringing Gasol back.

“If the Lakers get Carmelo, Pau will stay,” said a person familiar with Gasol’s thinking.

With the Lakers meeting with Anthony on Thursday, the team is “laser-focused” on persuading the All-Star forward to join Kobe Bryant and hopefully Gasol to form a strong trio of their own. While it is unknown if Bryant will be part of the pitch meeting, Jeanie Buss will be joining her brother and general manager Mitch Kupchak.

After the worst season in franchise history, the Lakers are looking to quickly rebuild and have taken the first step by selecting Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson in the NBA Draft. With ample cap space, the team has pursued numerous players, but appear focused on re-signing Gasol and bringing Anthony to Los Angeles.

    With Marshall/Kobe/Melo/Randal/Pau
I don’t think this Line up will be efficient basketball in the defensive end. Kobe getting older can’t guard the combo guards. Melo little too big and slow to guard a SF. Randal is still a baby in nba will get man handle by any PF. Pau is too soft for center. Yik

Um, if Melo gets MAX from Lakers there will be NO $$$ to sign Pau with. I highly doubt he takes a min. contract from us when he could get a great deal more from the Bulls … or even quite a bit more from the Thunder.
In order to afford both Melo and Pau the Lakers would need to TRADE Steve Nash and/or Julius Randle to a team that can absorb their cap space … and since NO ONE wants Nash, Randle would need to be included in such a deal … think Randle+Nash to the 76′ers for an unprotected #1 pick next year.

With Kobe’s and Nash’s contract on the books, the Lakers have limited spending ability, and let’s face it money is a big factor for any player signing with the team. If winning chips was the ultimate goal Kobe and the FO would not have agreed to that contract. The Lakers should not expect LeBron or Melo to play for less than max contracts only because they are the Lakers.
As fans we fantasize into believing that all players want to do is win a championship, and of course, we think that the Lakers are also thinking the way we do, but all you have to do is see what they have done in the last couple of years and reality says otherwise. Nash and Kobe stand in the way of Melo or LeBron signing, not having anyone else under contract stand in the way of doing any trades, so what now? Ariza? Deng? I Thomas? Championship? Don’t think so!
My pitch is to do a sign and trade with Gasol and Randle for K. Love, then maybe Melo will join. Gasol can finish his career with a lucrative contract palying with his buddy Ricky Rubio. My 2 cents.

i upgraded your 2 cents to a 50 cent piece.

I hope he signs either way.

I think Melo and Kobe would be a hrd duo to stop especially if gasol returns and randle turns out to play to his potencial i think we are alright we have a good bench with farmar and if nick young comes back thats all we need.

GASOL, ANTHONY, BRYANT, CARTER-WILLIAMS or LOWRY, and LOVE or JAMES
