Lakers Rumors: Pau Gasol Says ‘No First Or Second Option’ In Free Agency

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

As the uncertainty surrounding free agent Pau Gasol continues to grow, many believe that Gasol will leave the Lakers and sign with a contender this off-season.

In an article on Marca.com, Gasol expressed his gratitude about Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak making Gasol a priority in free agency this summer. He would also add that, at this time, he has no first or second option in free agency:

I appreciate [Mitch] Kupchak’s words about his interest in re-signing me. It’s always important to feel wanted. Today there’s no first or second option. We’ll see when the time comes.

Earlier in the season, the Lakers center expressed his frustration with the ‘small ball’ style of play preferred by head coach Mike D’Antoni leading some to speculate that he wouldn’t return if D’Antoni is still the coach.

Despite the frustration, and injuries suffered by Gasol and the rest of the Lakers, he was able to nearly average a double-double this season, posting up 17.4 points, and 9.7 rebounds in 60 games played.

During his exit interview, the two-time NBA champion also said that he envisions himself playing for five more years, and that his relationship with Kobe Bryant would be a major reason that he would stay in Los Angeles.

With both Jordan Hill and Chris Kaman joining Gasol in free agency this summer, the Lakers may be looking at an entirely new front court next season. Both Gasol, and the Lakers will have a lot of things to figure out before July 1 comes.

I say the Lakers should bring him back for a 3 year 18 million dollar deal that way he doesn’t get paid too much and that way we make him happy too, also depends if D’antoni gets fired which I think he will here pretty soon. And then the Lakers can sign some other guys like Deng or Ariza maybe Lowry and make a run at Melo if he comes here for winning instead of taking all the money. If Lakers can get a good pick in the draft, they can draft embiid exum or wiggins but if it’s out of the top six I say they trade it for irving or love.
    Lakers starting lineup next season:
    PG: Kyle Lowry
    SG: Kobe Bryant
    SF: Luol Deng
PF:Kevin Love (depending on what happens lottery night
    C: Pau Gasol
This team would be loads better and a pretty decent starting lineup that would make the playoffs no sweat. What do you guys think?

    • J.Mai

Kevin Love is worth more than a lottery pick

      • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

lottery pick plus Hill+Johnson via sign and trade for Love… can it work?

        • comrade24

good move i say. sign Love and t hen wait for Rondo or Irving in FA

          • Joseph Apohen

            Westbrook. Not Rondo or Irving.

          • Al Haldie

He would never fit with KOBE…

          • Joseph Apohen

He would fit with Kobe because like Kobe, he works his ass off. Kob likes that. Beside Kobe may only have one more year, and he may not be around if we can get Westbrook. Rondo may not fit with the Mamba either because he is a pain in the you know what.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Westbrook plays a lot like DWade and DRose. All three guys are pretty young and already dealing with persistent injuries. Need a more methodical point guard, like Chris “Basketball Reasons” Paul…

          • Joseph Apohen

CP would be okay. I just like Westbrook as he is exciting. A kamikaze!

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

And a ball hog who insists on getting his own shot when he might have the best scorer to ever play the game wearing the same color.

          • Joseph Apohen

Best scorer to ever play the game? Forgot Kobe? He might be a ball hog, but OKC did not go far last year without him. Isn’t KD a ball hog too? He has not done well against Memphis lately. Once Kobe retires, we need someone who can score and penetrate from the backcourt. You have your opinion, but I think he can be a tremendous additon.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I didn’t forget Kobe. Kobe said it himself that Durant is probably a better scorer than him. If Westbrook would give up the ball every once in a while, KD could easily average 35.

          • Joseph Apohen

Westbrook has given up the ball many times not just once in a while. Durant is a better scorer than Kobe now. Kobe was a better scorer is his prime. Westbrook is a fantastic player. How many pg’s can you name that can lead the team distribute the ball and still score, rebound, and defend? However, I am not going to sway your mind so end of discussion.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

How many point guards who can penetrate and finish have ever won a title? I can’t think of anyone other than Tony Parker. Forget exciting; I want someone who can run a half-court offense.

          • Joseph Apohen

Half court offense? You’ll have to go to that boring triangle offense. Sounds like Marshall is your man!

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Boring like the Lakers or Spurs being in the Finals 12 out of the last 15 years. Yes, please. If Marshall learns to shoot or make a layup or something, then I’d be okay with him. Chris Paul is seriously the only PG I really like in the NBA right now; that’s why I’m still so ticked about basketball reasons.

          • Joseph Apohen

Don’t get me wrong. I like winning too. San Antonio is not running the triangle. They are a great team that move the ball unlike the past Lakers with Shaq in the triangle who scored by bowling over people where the refs turned their heads. NBA is an entertainment and I like to be entertained rather than just winning at any cost. If you remember the 1977 Portland Trailblazers the ball never touched the floor, everyone was moving and no one stood around. So was the Knicks with Bill Bradley and Walt Fraizier. SA is similar to those teams. Going back to the topic on hand, I like CP too, but he is not the defender Westbrook is. Klay Thompson would not post Westbrook down low.

        • Al Haldie

Your going to give away the only guys that r/b on d-fence and LOVE does not play d-fence…

      • Gemini Ac

Ariza also good former lakers champion.

      • Al Haldie

And PAU is worth more then 6 ml…

    • David_lee24

Why give him a 3 year deal if you thinks he’s going to be fired?
And Kevin Love isn’t a free agent until 2015 lol

      • David_lee24

        Think* my bad

      • lakerfan

Aquiring K Love through trading pick thats what he means. Yea Love is worth more than a pick but wolves either trade for that or let Love walk for noting in 2015

    • kobe24

Why the hell are people liking this comment it isn’t going to work with Lakers salary cap

Lakers have $20~25 million (forgot exactly what) of salary cap

      Kevin love + Gasol = $20~million alone

Kyle Lowry and Luol Deng? Unless these guys sign for veterans minimum, (which no way in hell is going to happen) it isn’t going to work out

      • whats up mex

Yea bro u know u can go over the cap right and the lakers just got like a billion dollar deal with twc so i dont think money is gonna be a problem if they can actually get love and deng and maybe lowry … Maybe

        • Josh

Yea bro u know u can only go over the cap to resign your own players. You can’t go over it to bring in free agents, and your own free agents have to be signed first.

          • jbb

only happens in 2K game. dumb

          • Josh

I have 2K11, and even that one won’t let you break salary cap rules.

      • greg

It’s more than 25 but it Dsnt matter because the lakers are not afraid to pay luxury tax, this scenario is very possible, but if we can’t get love I say we use the pick on Exum (jabari if we hit lottery) and get greg monroe so the lineup would either be:
        1.
        Pg: Kyle lowry
        sg: kobe
        sf: jabari parker
        Pf: pau gasol
        c: greg monroe

        or

        2.
        pg: Exum
        Sg: kobe
        sf: deng
        pf: gasol
        c: monroe

If we get love than we can’t resign pau, we gotta go for lowry, monroe, and deng

        • Joseph Apohen

Why is everybody so enamored with Deng? How about Parsons or Ariza?

          • Josh

Is Parsons going to be UFA? If so, he should definitely be priority #1 this summer.

          • Josh

Rockets have team option on Parsons for next year. He’ll be UFA next summer.

          • Gemini Ac

            Ariza is good.

      • comrade24

i actually just saw they will have almost 30 million in cap space, their suggestion wouldn’t work.

    • Al Haldie

You sure have a lot of if”s in there—-

    • wangkon936

Sacrifice 2014 for the 2015 season. We can get Kyle and Kevin for free (via free agency) in 2015.

      • Josh

There’s no such thing as free. High price free agents decimate the ability to sign role players and add depth. If you can get players now who will help, no sense waiting another year on them.

        • wangkon936

Completely untrue. You save cap space to bring on superstars and you use the appeal that superstars bring to recruit role players. There are many role players in the NBA. The NBA is full of decent role players. However, you can count true superstars on one, maybe two hands.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Which is exactly why you don’t wait another year to pursue a potential superstar in free agency if you can trade for him now. Especially when that player can look at the numbers and see he makes a lot more money if he goes to play in Texas or Florida.

  • Clifford Paul

Here’s how I think the lineup could look next year (based on Joel Embiid being the draft pick. Never say never lol)

    PG Kirk Hinrich/Farmar/Marshall
    SG Kobe/Henry
    SF Ariza/Bazemore/Johnson
    PF Patrick Patterson/Robert Kelly
    C Embiid/ Sacre

Sign 2 or 3 more guys to fill out the roster. Nash needs to retire. Patrick Patterson is a (sigh) stretch 4, with good athleticism to fit Mr. Pringles’ offense. Looks like we’re stuck with Antoni next year. Ariza and Hinrich could possibly be signed on 2 year deals with team options for the 2nd year. Both can defend and shoot, and Ariza brings athleticism. This team, if healthy, could win 47 or so games. I dont know if thats gonna cut it in the west though. Gonna be a tough year next year. Here’s my wishful thinking 2015 lineup

PG Kyrie/Hinrich(if option is picked up)/Farmar
    SG Kobe/ Henry
SF Ariza (if option is picked up)/ Bazemore/ Johnson
    PF Kevin Love/ JJ Hickson/Kelly
    C Embiid/Sacre

Hopefully Byron Scott will replace Pringles and teach defense, and potentially recruit Kyrie Irving. Wishful thinking.

    • Booger

      Keep your day job, dummy.

      • Clifford Paul

At least I have a day job, troll.

    • Josh

Go back to State Farm if you don’t even know the current Lakers players’ names.

    • Greg

I hope this scenario Dsnt happen…def not a contender, good team, but no contender…I think the rosters I said before would def do it but this team def would not win immediately for kobe

      • Clifford Paul

Who’s available this year thats going to make them title contenders? The only game-changer available this offseason is Lebron, and he aint coming here. Might as well preserve cap space for 2015 when they can go after Love/Irving/Aldridge/Rondo

    • Joseph Apohen

      Sacre??!!

  • lakersn9ers

Long long time laker fan and I don’t need someone saying I’m not …but if they keep that f______g coach you can sit down and turn your TV off….as they will be a joke again …..

    • Booger

      OK

  • DC

As soon as the season starts Nash’s expiring contract becomes a valuable trade asset, maybe for Tyreke Evans(3 years @ 11 mil/year) so if the Lakers can resign Pau and sign Lowry and draft Randle the line up would be
    1 Lowry (10mil)
    2 Mamba (24)
    3 Tyreke (11)
    4 Julius Randle (4)
    5 Pau (6)
Bring Henry(1.5), Meeks(3), Swaggy P(3), J Hill(4) and Farmer(2) back for the 2nd team and Sacre(1) , Kelly(1) Manny Harris(1) to fill roster. Thats not a dream team but strong and realistic, could even sub Lowry for Bledsoe

    • DC

I would rather have Bledsoe bc he is 4 years younger but the Suns said they would match any offer

    • God ¢╫Γןϟϟϟ

why the hell would the pelicans give up evans for nash?

      • DC

Nash and his Expiring contract = cap space for 2015, pelicans aren’t high on Evans and they have aminu at sf

    • Greg

      I hope this doesn’t happen either…not a winning team…

    • Josh

There is no way Young signs for 3 or Hill signs for 4. They will each be offered double that by other teams. Pau is probably still worth 8-9 on a partially guaranteed contract.

  • KingEmperor

kevin love is no defense at all we need defensive players and don’t ever trade the pick we need that young guys talent..

    • Greg

Kobe has 2 years…a rookie isn’t gonna do s**t without great tallent around him…we should get love if he is available because his future looks BRIGHT, it’s hard averaging 25 and 12 on jumpshots AND post plays…

      • Marty Susman

I can care less about Kobe, I care about the TEAM & it’s future….Hell we could end up with CP3 & even Blake next year if they refuse to play for the Clippers…

      • KingEmperor

love will come at 2015 by free agency men so the lakers must wait and relax..

  • KingEmperor

how about this line up :

    PG Marcus Smart
    SG Kobe Bryant
    SF Gordon Hayward
    PF Greg Monroe
    C Marcin Gortat

    • Bigbaddrick

This is the most possible/Realistic of any. Out in second round next year. Following year get love.

      • wangkon936

Getting Greg, Gordon and Marcin will eat up cap space and you might not have enough left over to afford Love.

        • whatkindofcheesewouldthemoonbe

Interesting line-up, rather take Exum though… Smart is perhaps more realistic at this point…
How about take Monroe and trade for love, with Nash expiring contract?
Or maybe pass om Monroe and wait for love i 2015

          • wangkon936

Will never work. MN will never trade a 25 year old for a 40 year old, even if they will risk losing Love in 2016. Besides, the salaries don’t match. Love will make around $16MM next year and Nash will make $9.7MM.

Giving MN Nash, the 6th pick and a throw in player (to make salaries work) for Love is more likely. Nash’s expiring contract is attractive with a bumper free agent crop in 2016.

          • KingEmperor

lakers just need to keep their pick..

  • KingEmperor

don’t trade the pick keep it!!!!

  • Marty Susman

First off we should try & do some sort of “SIGN N TRADE” but if we can’t & if he would sign for say two years max at around $3,000,000 then we can keep him, no more then that amount…Yes he might get more elsewhere BUT we NEED YOUTH & SPEED & Gasol is neither of those…

    • Chrmngblly

Sign and trade Pau, plus Nash for Tyson Chandler and some other player. That’s better than Monroe or anybody else available. 2 years left on his contract. Otherwise just keep Pau. Chandler is 31 and defends the rim.

  • Speaky

    PG: D Fisher
    SG: K Bryant
    SF: Ron Artest
    PF: Paul Gasol
    C: Andrew Bynum

    • Josh

If we’re going there, how about:

      PG – M Johnson
SG – B Scott (also head coach?)
      SF – J Worthy
      PF – A Green
      C – K Abdul-Jabbar

    • Gemini Ac

      That’S strong Line Up before.

  • Devon Samuels²⁴

What ever happens happens has long they fire MDA!

  • daniel

    1) Gasol, only for 5 million a single year to play back up center. If he thinks he can play in the NBA for 5 years, he is dreaming. You just look at the tape and see the way he is playing defense, no way in hell.
    2) Kobe, stop bitching about everything. for once in your life think about the team, not about yourself, and your role in the next two year will be to be a mentor of the young the lakers will bring. If you can put up 15 points a game, great, but play for the team, not yourself.
    3) don’t trade any picks. Love will be a free agency at the end of next season, don’t do the same mistake of past years to keep Kobe happy, be patient.
    4) this summer, get a good pick and get one good free agent, if possible too. Complete the roster with development players.
    5) Next couple of years, get two more free agents and more picks and we are good to go.

  • Gemini Ac

Now D’Antoni is gone maybe Pau will stay in L.A LAKERS.

  • The X Factor

With the resignation of Mike D. I think its possible that Gasol, Kaman , and Hill will return.
