Lakers Rumors: Pau Gasol Met With GM Mitch Kupchak On Wednesday Night

Heading into free agency, there were concerns if the Los Angeles Lakers would be able to re-sign Pau Gasol. Despite these past difficult seasons, Gasol remains one of the biggest free agents available and the Lakers are in need of frontcourt depth with only Robert Sacre on contract. While numerous teams have expressed interest, there have been reports of the two-time champion returning if the franchise is able to land Carmelo Anthony.

With Carmelo Anthony expected to make his decision on Thursday, Gasol reportedly met with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak at the team’s practice facility last night according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears:

Over the past 24 hours, there have been conflicting reports about Anthony’s decision. It was reported that the All-Star forward will re-sign in New York, while his agent has said that a decision has not yet been made.

If the Lakers are unable to land Anthony, Kobe Bryant spoke about the team’s Plan B and seems very confident moving forward at his basketball camp in Santa Barbara yesterday. With ample cap space, there are numerous players the team will still be able to pursue if Anthony ultimately decides to sign elsewhere.

Ideal situation. Mitch knows Melo is coming to LA and was working on deal with Pau
What probably happened: Mitch was pleading with Pau to return and apologized for the 24/7 trade rumors while Pau was thinking Spurs or Bulls

    • LakersOverEverything

      True!! Lol

    • LegendInMyMind

Pau and Duncan in the same lineup? That would be almost be worth the heartache losing that dude would cause. I think any real Laker fan can appreciate Pau’s position here. He’s been loyal, the organization can’t say the same. While I want Pau back in Laker gold, I can’t hold it against him if he decides to move elsewhere.

I just bought a brand new Maserati after having made $8072 this past 4 weeks and just over 10k last month. This is the best and most financially rewarding job I’ve ever had. I actually started this few months ago and almost immediately started to bring home minimum $81 p/h. I use details from this webpage…… Jobs29.c*om

Reality situation, Kupchak knows carmelo is staying in new York and they dont want new york to steal gasol so hes trying to keep him…

  • Super Girl

Wow! Imagine if Pau joins the SPURS!!! I would hate to see this happening…

  • Baba Lu

did he meet with mitch to say goodbye? hope not :(

  • MelotoLA

Melo going back Knicks this good be a blessing in disguise

  • Joey Torres

I hope he stay because we don’t have any other choice for the center position.

    • DDub

There is always choices, they can’t get any weaker at rim protection than pau, people look at his offensive numbers and say he had a good year, yeah his numbers were good , but he missed too many games, don’t play defense. And cry too much.Guards don’t even respect him at the rim. Its like pau is back there so they have no fear of a shot being blocked, and bigs abuse him now.

    • socalchargin

Andrew bynum said he wants to be a laker…hes the only free agent center that can dominate and kobe always kept him in line better than anyone else

      • http://www.myagentdaniele.com Daniel Ezenyilimba

Is Andrew Bynum still playing? No one’s heard anything about him lately. He could still prove a serviceable center

  • Al Haldie

Its all RUMORS – on LAKERS NATION – don’t work your self UP…

  • LakersTank

If the Lakers failed to land Melo/James, they should consider sign & trade Pau for future pick + young player (preferable 1st rounder). There is no point in signing a veteran and wasting his talent. At least the Lakers can get something out of it.

    • Al Haldie

PAU: Has no reason to sign with the LAKERS – he is much better with the SPURS –Hell The LAKERS DONT EVEN HAVE A COACH-they will be LUCKY toget a team togeather…..

    • http://www.myagentdaniele.com Daniel Ezenyilimba

This is the most common sensical thing that’s been said on this board to date. How do we turn an aging Gasol into future assets

  • meep

kobe said he wanted blake cant get him now he a blazer

    • Monix

Thankfully the Blazers kept us from having to worry about an aging injury prone guard from coming back.

  • Joey Torres

lakers is going to get nothing

    • LakersTank

Exactly. It’s time to admit that we are in a completely rebuilding mode and the best way to do it is by drafting talented players (top 5 pick). We already have Randle who could be a double-double machine, if we can add another one from 2015, at least we have a good foundation to start over.

      • spade

We don’t have 2015 first round pick. It was traded to the suns via Nash trade.

        • JohnnyMac

          It’s a top-5 protected pick

          • TheZuluNation

IDK if we will be that bad this season.

      • Dalton15

We don’t have a 2015 pick man. If plan B is as good as kobe thinks then I’m fine.
aim for love I’m 2015 then Durant 2016

        • LakersTank

It’s a top 5 protacted pick – the Lakers can still get back the pick.

  • Will

What if they were discussing Sign and Trade teams?

    • wangkon936

I would love a sign and trade for Pau. The Lakers need 1st round draft picks desperately.

    • TheZuluNation

I’ve heard Chicago as the only team interested in a S&T. I’m fine with Boozer + future picks… or OKC could offer Perkins, Thabeet + their 2015 1st round pick. Either one works.

  • NotaKobePoleRider

They swung for the fences, and put up solid presentations according to Melo and LBJ’s people, and they missed. I won’t bash the FO for that. They went big game hunting and just couldn’t close. Now it is time for a full rebuild. Gather up future draft picks as much as they can. If you can’t land elite FA’s, you need a solid young core of up and coming talent to groom and mold to be the next star, or develop them enough that they can be valuable trade pieces to trade for superstars.

    • jim2

That is not the Laker way. Hire Jerry West as a consultant to Jim Buss.

      • LakersTank

And then what? You can’t change the new CBA rules. The Lakers have no asset to trade nor enough pieces to attract top FAs.

        • Drake1

Exactly. Done fans are so stuck in the old way of doing things which did wirk, but has been quite ineffective as the league progressed. Look at Houston, they spent some lean yrs loading up on assets when they couldn’t get any FAs, and those assets eventually were flipped for Harden, attracted Dwight, and perhaps Bosh.

      • CORKY CARROLL

YES absolutely hire Jerry West right NOW…. 100000% agree with you

      • Terrell

It’s really time to re-evaluate this whole “THIS IS THE LAKER WAY, THIS IS HOW WE DO IT…” thing. It may have worked before but it’s a new NBA now. Stars are more inclined to team up and are more concerned with team makeup rather than just taking the money from the first big market team to pony up. Evolve or go the way of the dinosaur which is where the team is currently headed.

      • TheZuluNation

Not gonna matter. Jim doesn’t wanna listen to anyone.

  • courtney harris

All these speculations… Kobe just said espn had dropped the ball (with the ucla story) let’s wait until everything is official

  • CORKY CARROLL

One of the other commentors here called this the MELO DRAMA…. its true and its time for it to get over one way or another. FA’s are getting signed by the minute and we are gonna be left with nothing but Andrew Bynum and Steve Nash. No offense to Steve Nash, but lets face it…. he is never coming back in any kind of shape to start for us again. Make up your freaking mind Melo and let the drama finally end.

  • DKWTTY

Either he told him Melo is coming and they are working on a new deal, a sign & trade deal or Pau came to tell him he’s leaving but with all those trades rumors would Pau really be that considerate? He’s a class act so probably :(

  • Al Haldie

TO: JIM BUSS It is a old saying but true three strikes and your out this is your third yr in charge, and its the worst if you can believe that , your just no good at what your doing, hang it up…

  • Dwan Fulwood

Plan B sign Eric Bledsoe, Trevor Ariza, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen , Nick Young, I. Thomas, Pau Gasol and trade for Roy Hibbert. Next year Lamarcus Aldridge and Clay Thompson.

    • TheZuluNation

      LOL!

If Pau comes back and Randle plays the power forward position. It reminds me of Pat Riley showtime Lakers. Pau is like Kareem more of a finesse player and AC Green was the bruiser and that’s what Randle would give the Lakers. Sign Luol Deng for the small forward spot . Kobe can still play the shooting guard. I would give that rookie a chance to play the point guard Jordan Clarkson and see what he can do. Pau at center, Randle at PF, Deng at SF, Kobe at SG, Clarkson at PG. Backup center Robert Sacre, resign Jordan Hill to play PF, Xavier Henry at SF, Kent Bazemore at SG, Marshall and Nash at PG. Nash can’t play too many minutes.
