Lakers Rumors & News Recap: Melo A Real Possibility Next Summer?

KobeCarmeloThere’s no telling how the upcoming 2013-14 NBA season will go for the Los Angeles Lakers. The team has been torn apart for various reasons with Dwight Howard deciding to go to the Houston Rockets, Earl Clark signing a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Metta World Peace being amnestied.

The current squad won’t look much like last season, and the same may go for the 2014-15 season.

With all the money coming of the books next summer, the Lakers’ front office will have a lot of flexibility and cap space at their disposal. Although there will be plenty of talent available, it remains uncertain at this point whether or not the storied franchise can land one or two of the big-name players.

The top two players said to be targeted by the Lakers are LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. With LeBron currently rolling with the Miami Heat and working on a three-peat next season, it’s a stretch to say the least that the Lakers will be able to lure him to Los Angeles. Anthony, on the other hand, may be an easier sell.

Recently, Vanessa Bryant was seen having dinner with Anthony’s wife, La La, in Los Angeles. Obviously, this dinner between the wives in L.A. has fueled speculation that Anthony may be headed to the Lakers next summer. Of course, it’s extremely too early to speculate with an entire season yet to be played, but Anthony coming to Los Angeles may very well be on the horizon.

It’ll depend on the Knicks season but if Lebron decides to play for the Knicks 2014-2015, I don’t believe Melo would want to stick around and play 2nd fiddle as Lebron would likely get most of the credit if the Knicks ever win a title.

    • Daryl Peek

So are you suggesting he’d rather come to the Lakers and play second fiddle to Kobe?

      • Jim213

With everyone breaking down last seasons debacle and with Kobe’s talk about last year’s weaknesses management is addressing current needs to an extent. WIth Kobe playing lesser minutes next season and some hinting that 11 players will get serious minutes Kobe knows they need more help depth wise that also means bringing in fresher legs.

Given Kobe and Melo are good friends off the court, I don’t believe it’ll be too much of an issue as Kobe would likely mentor Melo to an extent. IMO, Melo has between 7 to 8 years left on his career while Kobe has brought up that he’ll play another 3 seasons. Given all the off season hoopla about Kobe, he’ll take a paycut so the franchise can try to acquisition the necessary suitors to keep the BRAND at the top (competitive).

IMO, if the right acquisitions take place I’m certain KB24 would lessen his role which includes playing lesser minutes (32 min. a night?) while mentoring the future to keep the ship (franchise) afloat. IMO, if KB24 happened to win another title before his timeline I believe he’d retire as if a star player is acquired in the near future they should realize and learn from Kobe’s mentality being his competitiveness and win at all cost motto that has helped the Brand win 5 more championships.

Melo is very close with LeBron also. Kobe will only be even more motivated to get #7 if he got #6. I don’t see either player leaving the current teams. Melo is more likely. LeBron is not leaving Riley.

          • Jim213

Top 3 teams for Lebron Heat/Cavs/Knicks. Melo isn’t guaranteeing anything next season to the franchise and its fans. He’s recently mentioned (last few months) that this coming season with the Knicks will play an important role in his future decision about remaining a Knickerbocker.

          • Daryl Peek

All of that is rumor. LeBron is staying put IMO. No way Riley lets him bounce. Riley is not Dan Gilbert. Melo loves NY too much. The Knick FO has the heads up due to that and they don’t want to let him go either.

I wont speak in absolutes but I really don’t see either leaving their current situations.

          • Jim213

IMO, Either Lebron stays or goes to the Cavs, and it seems with some of the off the court issues that some bring to the Knicks if they fail to make the top 4 ranks and lose in the 1st round I’d still believe Melo would consider other options given his now or never type of talk.

          • Thomas LaBre

Lebron ain’t going to the Knicks, way more of a chance he comes to L.A. and I don’t give that much of a chance. Why would he go to the Knicks? They can’t build around players like the Lakers can

          • Jim213

LJ has mentioned he’ll strongly consider NY come 2014 FA. I’d prefer LJ but doubt he’ll join the Lakers especially since he’s winning rings with the Heat.

          • CWB

They said Riley would not leave LAL, but, he did for what he thought was an up and coming team. The Heat are at the end of thier road…one of the big three has a flat tire and the other has some software trouble. If LeBron wants to keep on winning rings, he must jump on another bus…now!

          • Daryl Peek

Wrong. Everyone knew Riley was gonna leave the Lakers. Dr. Buss encouraged him to do so, so Pat could grow. LBJ will not leave Miami IMO.

  • Lakers4Life

Can’t wait to see the Bron-Melo-Kobe trio next season without Dumbtoni FTW!

  • SD

Bron is like a 1% chance. Players usually don’t leave teams they’ve recently won titles with unless something goes horribly wrong. I could see Chris Bosh opting out to play on a team with a bigger role. I think Melo will certainly test the waters. That’s a no-brainer. The Knicks should trade Amare for a PG/SG or anyone who can play along side Carmelo. The only way he stays is if they make a trade for a really good player or make the eastern conference finals or nba finals. Could he come to LA? Yes, he and Kobe are closer than close and have been for quite some time. Their games actually compliment each other. Either way, for the Lakers, it’ll be a situation like the Heat. What 2-3 guys will text about playing in LA? Paul George/Kyrie…likely won’t happen but they would be the 2 guys I’d want and I could see them wanting to play under the lights for a max contracts. Their careers outside of basketball would balloon…We’ll see though.

instead of melo why not drummond, lowry, vujacic, roy, kirilenko, cdr then re-sign kobe and gasol

    Good bye Kobe
    Hello Durant

    • Thomas LaBre

      Durant is signed through 2015-16

      • CWB

Anything can happen in the NBA…contracts have some weight, but, it does not carve anything onto stone.

    • Paytc

Check back in when you wake up LOL ……
Kobe is retiring as a Laker. We will however be signing a superstar or two in 2014.

  • Lakeshow

Lebron is going nowhere, he couldn’t handle carrying his own legacy in Cleveland so he joined an allstar team. But now that he is fresh in his new dynasty of an allstar squad, him leaving means no more championships because he can’t carry a team without having any weak spots. As for Carmelo, I doubt he leaves too, he is at home in NY and I don’t think he would leave unless Knicks have a super horrible season.

Honestly no way this happens if dantoni is still here
