Lakers Rumors & News Recap: Kupchak, D’Antoni To Talk About Roster

Mitch KupchakThe Mike D’Antoni era with the Los Angeles Lakers has not gotten off to a good start.

The Lakers’ front office chose to hire D’Antoni instead of bringing back Phil Jackson for a third stint with the team and the decision has backfired thus far. Los Angeles is currently sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference with an ugly record of 24-28 following the loss to the Miami Heat on Sunday.

Although there’s been signs of promise with the new-look Lakers over the course of the seven-game road trip, the team has also fallen apart at times with losses to the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, and a poor effort against the lowly Charlotte Bobcats.

Needless to say, the team built around Kobe Bryant to win a championship during the off-season hasn’t been working.

Now that Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill are on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the question remains about whether or not the team should pursue a trade before the deadline on Feb. 21. The results of the seven-game road trip were thought to help determine the fate of the team and some of its players, but uncertainty continues to swirl with less than two weeks to go before the deadline.

Following the loss to the Heat on Sunday, general manager Mitch Kupchak and D’Antoni will meet to discuss the roster and potential moves that can be made moving forward. The Lakers’ front office has been adamant about not trading Dwight Howard and will be forced to keep Pau Gasol until the end of the season due to his injured foot, but that doesn’t mean other players aren’t expendable or potentially on the block in Los Angeles.

Big moves to mix things up probably won’t happen in the coming weeks, but anything is possible with Kupchak and company no strangers to making a deal after claiming that nothing will be done.

THANK YOU! The players on the current roster are starting to be ok with “good” losses, as long as they tried. This is not the lakers of old.

We need a player that can “SHOOT” from any where!!! and play “DEFENSE”…….

MWP’s time is up. By not playing Ebanks over the past few weeks D’Antoni has made it know that he wants someone else on his roster. Playing only eight players today is the reason the turnovers increased in the 4th quarter – the guys were tired!

I could go in a millian directions on what need to be done but I would start with picking up Kenyon Martin and trading for an athletic/defensive minded/shooting small forward. Next, D’Antoni’s rotation needs to increase to 9-10 players so that the starters’ minutes won’t leave them gassed by the end of the year.

    To be continued….

D’Antoni’s work this season is being catastrophic: sure these are not the names he dreams of… but who has ever had them? A system made in the office without considering the actual people in the locker room is science-fictional. It’s sad, because LA has a roster that has shown a few times they can work well together. LA on the court: Dwight completely lost, Nash trying to find people who don’t know what to do or where to move, Clark with too much responsibility on his shoulders, Jamison overlooked, the hyper-motivated MWP at the beginning of the season now trying to find himself… congrats, coach.
