UPDATE (1:15 PM): According to TNT’s David Aldridge, Mitch Kupchak and the Los Angeles Lakers were able to meet with LeBron James’ agent on Friday:

The Los Angeles Lakers had a huge day planned as they met with Carmelo Anthony today and apparently offered him a max contract.

But there are two big names in free agency, and news began to break today that multiple teams met with LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul. The Lakers were not one of those teams, but were still trying to secure a meeting, and now it seems like they have as general manager Mitch Kupchak is headed to Cleveland according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard:

The Lakers had hopes of pairing both James and Anthony along with Kobe Bryant, but in reality they only have the cap room to land one unless both agree to take major pay cuts, which is unlikely.

The Lakers went all-out in their meeting with Anthony today, but the team is not stopping there and that is admirable. If the team could land James, it would immediately turn around the fortunes of the Lakers.

James’ agent has already met with representatives from the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets, and now the Lakers have added their name to the mix.

  • Eric Cartman

He isn’t coming to the Lakers

    • VillainKing

Agree..Melo is the best for the Lakers..

    • Eddie

Let me tell you all something Julius Randle+Steve Nash+Robert Sacre are about to get traded to the 76′ers for MCW.And guess what LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony are coming to the Lakers.Trading Julius Randle is not a easy decision but to get LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony you do that every single time.Julius nice dude and good young player but to get LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony by freeing up lots of cap space you do it 100% without regret or a second thought. It’s called being a NBA GM.

      • vdogg

you are flipping kidding yourself. that is NOT happening.

      • Lakers Realist

That’s not going to happen. We should stick with Randle, the kid is hungry and wants to turn the franchise around. Let him prove it while Kobe molds him.

      • gig

Robert scare in a trade your kidding right even though they have Noel and embid why would they want randle

      • Peter Griffin

And then who do they have to play center? Nobody because they can’t afford Gasol or anyone else for that matter. Forget Melo and James and save the cap space for next year and 2016 when Durant is a free agent. Randle developed in 2 years with the possibility of Love and Durant would be epic or Westbrook. 45 million plus in cap space in 2016. Sorry Kobe, teams have to rebuild. It’s just the way it is. Instant contender .

        • jim2

My way would be to trade Kobe now and get his contract removed then make max offers to LeBron and Mello. The NBA is about winning and no phony has beens. Kobe’s contract is why the Lakers will not contend until Kobe and Nash are both gone. The NBA is about the best and players from the past should be honored but not to the extent that it ruins the team.

      • jim2

I don’t get your math. Kobe: $24M, LeBron: 22M, Mello: 22M. Do I have to say more? The real problem is Kobe’s contract and it can’t be reduced even if Kobe agrees to a cut.

      • Bryant T. Jordan

Even if a Randle+Nash+Sacre for MCW trade went down, the Lakers would still NOT have enough cap space to offer LBJ and Melo max contracts.

In fact, if all the Lakers had was Kobe and MCW and (8) minimum cap holds, and they renounced their rights to Pau Gasol, they could only offer LeBron and Melo starting salaries of $16,670,636 which is a pittance compared to what each can get from numerous teams.

You sound like you enjoy playing armchair GM, which is awesome … and my guess is you would absolutely love my new book!

I think just about every Laker fan on the planet would love to see a Kobe/LeBron/Melo/MCW foursome next season, but, it simply isn’t realistic and I would say there is no more than a 30% chance Melo signs with Lakers and a .00000000000001% chance LeBron does.

I love Mitch and all but the dude just seems shady like him and the AEG group and the Time Warner Cable group are pulling some mafia under the table shit to payoff Carmelo and LeBron. Now Mitch is in Cleveland with Harris at 2:06 AM Cleveland time.Almost as shady as a college recruiter like John Calipari but a NBA GM.Mitch is down for the cause.Mitch seems like the guy that tells people to drop off a brief case at certain places to certain people lol ha ha ha this is crazy shit man lol ha ha ha too crazy.

      • DKWTTY

LMAO! Mitch does look creepy like he’s into some strange shit.

        • Vic

Like for real he does look totally creepy walking players to their car in a suit lol ha ha ha Carmelo reference and then having billionaire dudes from Time Warner Cable walking around with a brief case that soon gets dropped off in the right hands.Just crazy stuff man this is mafia Mitch at his finest.Mitch is doing shady under the table stuff with top athletes in the world this is super crazy and he wears a brown suit with a big brief case full of you guessed it shits getting crazier than Jim Irsay and his brief case incident.Mitch $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Money man.

      • ra

Yes, Mitch is the ‘saving grace’ for the FO. He’s the last vestige of the Jerry Buss days, and he’s really keeping the Lakers integrity in the transitional stages. That’s why he’s going for the big guns. That’s the ‘Lakers way’. There will be plenty of scrubs that come and go, and building off ‘very good’ but ‘non-superstar’ players in the future. Plenty of time in the future. Lakers need to strike while the iron is hot, and Mitch is our guy.

No need to worry about cap, luxury, etc. If Lakers land LBJ and Melo, the revenue from the skyrocketing World Brand of the Lakers will dwarf any NBA overage taxes, etc. Jerry Buss would sign up for this as well. No risk, no reward.

Also, now that ex-commish can’t meddle in basketball affairs (like he did with Chris Paul fiacso), maybe the Lakers have a good chance of striking it rich. Time to get the franchise jump started with some superstars.

Don’t worry, it will turn out ok.

      • David

So we should give him a nickname; Mafia Mitch. Lol

    • Devon Samuels²⁴

      or want him!

  • Jim213

Forget LJ if he can’t meet directly with team’s who’ve shown interest. But on a more serious note…

Adrian Wojnarowski (Yahoo): Chris kaman to sign with the Blazers.

Smh, (putting it nicely) FO better focus on signing some of the remaining players from last year’s 2nd unit.

    • VillainKing

Young and Hill I hope they will sign back for the Lakers..

      • Jim213

Young will wait but at the rate FO operates Hill will be gone within the next 5-7 days IMO.

        • LakerDev

          Yeah I agree

        • DKWTTY

After your boy Meeks left and got that big deal I don’t see Nick coming back. He likes the attention and wants a superstar deal, no way will he be able to swallow the fact that Meeks got a bigger deal. Lakers can’t offer much unless it’s spread out over 4 or 5 years. Some team will pay him big dollars.

          • Jim213

The man you idolize will have to settle for $3-4 mil at most as he’ll end up giving them the hometown discount. fo sho

          • DKWTTY

Ha don’t idolize him just stating facts and look like I knew, ya boy bounced outta here quick as hell. It’ll be interesting to see if he’ll accept that or leave.

          • Jim213

Fact that he left yes, but anything else has no merit.

        • jim2

Forget the Laker FA’s. The Lakers will stall until they are all gone and any other teams FA’s are all gone. Lakers will not make the playoffs until Kobe and Nash are gone.

    • Neezy

LeBron doesn’t have to meet with anyone if he doesn’t want to… is that NOT what agents are for?

      • A Fan

it’s a bad sign if the player himself isn’t present at meetings

        • Neezy

Not if that player has other obligations. And even if he has nothing to do, again, an agent is hired for a reason.

          • A Fan

But it’s still a bad sign if he has multiple suitors, has stayed silent for quite some time, and once we finally set up a meeting with him it looks like he isn’t even gonna show up. It can give you the impression that he’s not that interested

      • Jim213

It’s called showing serious interest tard. Just as melo’s managed to show.

        • Neezy

Yeah, sure. Again, what’s the purpose of an agent if you have to be present during every single sit down? LeBron also hadn’t had any scheduled meetings with teams until now. So who’s to say he won’t be present? Just saying, he’s not REQUIRED to meet with anyone.

          • Jim213

Disagree, if he was seriously interested in joining or hearing a particular team he’d show more interest to those teams who are trying to buy his services . But if teams like the Bucks, Wolves, Hawks are showing interest best to let his agent handle things.

          • Zimmeredge

They did not Meet Nash before he was hired as a laker btw.
I dont think lebron will come. Melo was and still is a long shot and lebron is a stellar shot. He is far away from the Lakers.
But… That being said Lakers even if they don’t land those guys they wanna make sure other teams will Max them out in order to limit their capacities in recruiting potential other fa. Wade and bosh might take paycut but it won’t be as big as it was expected. Bosh will take 15-16 and wade something like 12-14. If the heat was willing to give lebron the max it should´ve been a done deal. But, lebron is a tasty guy. He wants the Max, he wants good players and if wade and bosh are unwilling to paycut bigger paycut, hiring other good players won’t happen. Lebron knows very well that other teams will come to him with a Max proposal like the suns or the Lakers. He might use us as a way to blackmail riley’s heat and just like Phil Jackson with melo, riley being scared of loosing his best asset he will give him the Max and then work his butt off to assemble the team. If riley is not doing so, lebron will go elsewhere so proposant lebron is important. Even if he is not coming in the end that will limit the heat’s financial flexibility to hire guys during the summer or in the future. It’s a poker game. We are the Lakers, we are attractive and as outcast we evolve under the radar because we can propose to any fa a Max contract. Players might use as a leverage and we might use them against other teams, limiting their financial abilities. Then again if heat or knicks does not want to give them Max and a team they will leave. Not for the Lakers but they will.
That was the point in giving Kobe a 48m contract over two years. Show players we can pay you real money until the end of your career. In the mean Time Mitch is giving hell of a lot of phone calls to other players just in case we do no land any big fa. I guess stephenson is our priority because of his versatility.

    • Robert

I really hope lakers sign, parsons or hayward, they would be good assets for our team.

  • LakerDev

Ok, our FO is not smart. Lebron is playing ALL of these teams, to use his leverage against the Heat to get roll players. In the mean time, while we try to recruit 2 players who don’t want to be Lakers, we are missing out on players that could help our cause. Even if we will not win a title next year, it would be smart to at least get pieces to compete and make the playoffs.

Oh, I forgot, we still don’t have a coach.

    • What

Who are we missing out on all of the other players that the Lakers would be targeting are still unsigned

      • LakerDev

For me, Lowry, Gortat and Kaman. Gortat and Kaman are capable bigs, because we thin at that position. At this point, why fly out to Clev to talk to Lebron when you can try to recruit Lance, I.Thomas, Ariza, Hawes, Monroe, etc and add some pieces.

        • Zimmeredge

Because it’s not what we are going to do. Do you listen at what Mitch has been saying since summer started?

          • Chrmngblly

I would be talking to Parsons and Stephenson. We also need to dumpster-dive for a center, I am afraid. Who is undrafted? Can we get a Euro-big somewhere?

      • Robert

I would try and sign parsons or hayward, its not about getting super stars its about building a good solid block of players who can play together, if we have a nice young group of players then that might attrack at least one superstar to LA, I still highly doubt that we will land either carmelo or lebron.

        • jim2

At last, someone who has 1/2 a brain and understands.

    • jim2

The new Laker FO is not smart or experienced enough to know that you have to go after FA’s that are within reality so we will not only lose what good players we have but will be too late to get FA’s on the open market. The Lakers will not make the playoffs until Kobe and Nash are gone.

      • LakerDev

        Word!

      • Chrmngblly

AND not until Jim Buss is gone, either, I am sad to say….

      • Chrmngblly

Do you suppose we could use Bosh as our center with Randle–sort of “dueling power forwards?” Could Kelly bulk up enough to help Sacre and get the job done? What are some emergency backup plans at the 5?

  • Sti1lmatic

The Lakers will reach an agreement with someone tomorrow. Perhaps Steve Blake, Farmar or even Deng. Other than that, I have mixed feelings about the FO not pulling the trigger on key free agents that are still up in the air…….

    • Jim213

Hear the Clippers are concentrating on Farmar as don’t know if the CBA allows players who were traded to re-sign the following year. But they better sign somebody!

    • afs

Agreed. We can’t put all of our eggs in one basket with Carmelo. We should at least focus on getting some guys to put a decent team for next year before it’s too late.

    • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

      Ariza too!

    • ra

Role players are good, and building a team is ok, but the Lakers are about Championships and superstars, period. We expect that the FO will go after the big ticket guys first. If there’s a chance we can get them, we have to try above all else. That’s the prime directive. Once we have the big ticket guys, we build around them (not the reverse).

LeBron isn’t (and shouldn’t be) looking for a ‘ready made’ team that he might expect to just walk in, and ‘bingo’, Championships. He personally orchestrated the Big 3 in Miami, with Riley’s help. He wanted the people of ‘his’ choosing. DWade just isn’t the same anymore, and Bosh is more of a shadow of his old self, but does have a chance to get back to that.

LeBron wants a ‘franchise’ to orchestrate the building of a team around him.

To me, now, the best bet is Kobe-LeBron-Carmelo-Pau. That would be ‘formidable’. LeBron likes to pass, and would ‘pass’ to Kobe and Carmelo, and …. game over. The Lakers would be a ‘super team’. The NBA needs to keep having a ‘superteam’. If Kobe can’t play up to his usual self, or has a setback, it’s ok. LeBron would work it out with the team.

‘EVERYONE’ else would be a role player. I think LeBron could win Championships in LA, with a team like this. It’s his best chance, period.

Cleveland would be the same deal as years ago. Miami won’t make it past any western team in the Finals. Chicago? (no, not good enough). Houston? (no, too many need the ball for the team to run efficiently). Lakers is BEST BET for LeBron.

If Lakers overcome cap space and luxury issues, they will get LeBron and Carmelo, the next superteam.

If the Lakers ‘don’t’ get them, it’s okay. After then, we’ll worry about rebuilding. There are no superstars after LeBron, Carmelo, etc. Those days are over for a while. Best to get the ‘last of the greats’, and let’s go from there.

    • Chrmngblly

That would make me even more discouraged. When it finally comes down to the Lakers’ big move ending up being Blake or Farmar, we will know we are in deep doo-doo…

  • fuck nash man

fuck lebron james, he’s playing everyone.

    • Lakers Realist

I still feel they need to hold onto Randle. He’s got that fire that Kobe has. His ceiling is unknown, sure, but he’s freaking hungry and that’s the kind of young talent Kobe has been eager to mold. He won’t be another Smush, or Bynum. If they can get Lebron while holding onto Randle, great. If they can get Melo while holding onto Randle, great. If we have to sacrifice him in order to MAYBE get both of them though? I don’t think it’s worth it. Randle is a 10 year double double player at the minimum.

  • afs

Kupchak is obviously going to talk to Lebron to see if his kids are open to trying out for the Laker’s summer team about 15 years from now.

  • vdogg

the knicks are screwed. let them give melo a max deal. he had a great year last year and they couldn’t even make the postseason in the weak ass east.

    • Chrmngblly

Never sell Phil short…..foolish to do so.

  • TheTruthKills

He’s not coming, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to talk with LeBron’s representatives and see where his head is.

    • Zimmeredge

Yeah o guess it is a go to move from Mitch. Stay polite, shaker hands Talk Kids and family blahblah in the conversation Mitch might tell him hey lebron you Know that we can give the deal you want blahblah and that’s it. It’s more of an inquiry to show that we respect superstars.

  • Luca

Mitch Kupchak took a red eye to Cleveland to seal the deal to bring in LeBron and Carmelo wow fireworks are about to go off on independence day purple and gold fireworks it’s been a longtime coming for the fan base and ownership.Carmelo gave a verbal commitment and that gets sealed with LeBron coming along.

    • P5

Come on man. Living in fantasy world. Would be awesome but they can’t offer max to both

    • nash gots to go

      one can only dream.

    • Chrmngblly

Give the rest of us a hit off that….whatever it is…

  • DKWTTY

Why is Mitch wasting his time? We could have signed multiple GOOD players by now instead of chasing one GREAT player. Basketball is a team sport-stop always trying to go for the home run.

    • Lakers Realist

Why settle for only good? The other thing to keep in mind is they’ll go after Isiah Thomas, and potentially Greg Monroe if they’re plans A and B don’t work out. They can still build a solid team, no need to overpay when they can salvage good deals worth equal talent instead.

      • DKWTTY

We don’t know if those two are working out deals right now with other teams. You chase plan A while plan B moves on and signs to another team. Why settle? Because 4 good players is better than 1 great player who most likely isn’t coming to play for us.

        • Lakers Realist

If Mitch has taught the fan-base anything, it’s that he can turn Kwame Brown into Pau Gasol and an incapacitated Andrew Bynum into Dwight Howard. He didn’t cut it here sure, but Mitch still pulled it off. It’s never over until the contracts are signed.

          • DKWTTY

Not with the league up our ass and this CBA crap and luxury tax penalties. I have zero faith in the Jim Buss Lakers but we shall see.

          • Dragon7s

With all the penalties and the highest amount of revenue sharing paid out, the Lakers were still the most profitable NBA franchise and it wasn’t even close.

          • Lakers Realist

The Dwight move was post CP3 veto. It may not be this summer, but they will turn things around.

          • DKWTTY

Yeah probably 2-4 years from now. I’m impatient. I don’t expect a title but at least a playoff team. Last year was frustrating and downright embarrassing.

          • laker4life

Yea. That CP3 veto changed everything. But, letting Phil get away might be as big.

      • laker4life

Plus both Thomas and Monroe are RFA’s which means Sac and Phx can match offers. I think they get 10 days to decide which pushes us out even farther if offers get matched.

        • Chrmngblly

          Phx?

          • laker4life

My bad. Detroit. Was thinking about Bledsoe.

          • Chrmngblly

            :-)

    • Zimmeredge

Because no good players are willing to move until the best players have made a choice. And if you do after them during that period those good players will either asked for an overrpaid contract or will put you on hold until the big names are gone. No teams will move out there for good players until big names are out of the fa.

      • DKWTTY

A few have already…if we don’t get Melo or any of the b-grade players I’m going to be pissed.

        • Zimmeredge

We won’t get much of the b grade players anyway.
A Few we weren’t interested in.

        • Chrmngblly

          I’ll let Mitch know…

          • DKWTTY

lol Thanks. Btw you’re going to have to fight Jim213 for my affection, my dear…

          • Chrmngblly

Go for Jim213, if you are thinking of switch-hitting. You are too mean for me. I would goof up some way, like all men do, and then you would shoot me dead. Remember, I know you…:-)

          • DKWTTY

I’d curse you out real good, maybe toss your stuff outside, but I can’t do prison time for killing you. I’m too pretty for the pen. Jim213 knows me too or so he claims :)

          • Chrmngblly

I didn’t mean with an actual gun. I need a woman that has a soft spot for me and loves me for no good reason, you know? Just because I am her guy. I think it would be certain you would say things to me that you shouldn’t, if we ever tried to make something happen. You’d claim my dick was too small and I would claim your pussy was too big—we would kill each other…:-)

    • jim2

I totally agree. The Lakers will not make the playoffs again this year because the FO is letting all of the good players get away before they come back to reality.

    • Chrmngblly

Just waiting for the dominoes, my dear….

  • Lakers Fan

Mitch: “Hey Rich. I know LeBron is seeking a max contract, but I have 35 year old Kobe who just came off an Achilles injury and knee fracture under a $48 million contract over the next two years and I just offered Melo a max contract for over the next 4 years. Outside of those two players, I have 40-yr old Nash who hasn’t played 30+ games with us over the last two years and is set to make $9 million next season, I have a young center in Sacre who is a backup center at best, I have Marshall who possess passing abilities but is an awful jump shooter and defender, and who moves slower than Wilt rolling over in his casket, and I have Randle who has tons of potential as a rookie. We also plan on bringing Pau back to man the post and allow layup drills around the rim. Do you think there is ANY chance of us landing LeBron?

    Rich: *walks out of room*

The Lakers FO and some of these fans really need to wake up.

  • Lakers4Life

Wonderful news! The Lakers will be meeting LeBron and will be go “all in” according to various sources, just like I had expected.

Melo may remain in NY as rumor goes, but as long as we have LeBron paired with Kobe and Gasol, we should be in good shape. Then once we trade Randle along with Nash’s leeching contract, we’ll be set to bring in several role players.

    • Zimmeredge

We wońt trade randle at 2,5 with the quality the kid have he is the most affordable role player we already have on our team……

  • laker4life

Lakers always look for the best, but at the end of the day, Melo probably stays in NY and LBJ stays in Miami. Melo is a coast dude. Either NY or LA. LBJ isn’t going anywhere except Miami or Cleveland. Stars don’t pick Dal or Houston. LBJ and Melo are stars. Bring back Hill, Swaggy P, Farmar or Blake. Make a run at Bledsoe or Thomas. Phnx and Sac can match but at least we screw with their CAP room if they match. Same with Monroe. If Melo doesn’t come then Pau is gone. Only guy left is Deng. Even though Melo has his flaws and player wise wouldn’t be my first pick, he is a huge piece because he will attract other FA to consider us.

  • nash gots to go

I don’t know about you guys, but Mitch is up to no good.

I sense something about to go down for the Lakers. Ninja Style.

    • rival

      your an idiot bro

Waaahh waaa waaaa. Cry, cry, cry… “Why is management trying to meet with lebron?” “We’re letting all the free agents go. Oh my gosh you guys are embarrassing. Sorry the Lakers are trying to win! We go for championships, not for seventh best in the Western Conference. And that’s what would happen if we don’t go for the homerun. That’s why we have 16 championships. And if you guys had some sense you’d understand that the other second tier (stephenson, bledsoe, deng) of free agents are waiting for the first tier (lebron, melo, bosh) to land, then take make their choices. Kaman, Gortat, etc. have already signed. Big deal… Is that what who you guys really want when we have a shot at melo and lebron? A legit shot at Melo I might add (small shot at Lebron). It’s risky, but it is so worth it. We’re probably not winning a ring anytime soon without those guys; maybe a playoff series (or two) at best. We’re risking mediocrity for the hopes of rings. I’ll take that. And if things don’t work out with melo/lebron we will still have great chances of landing good free agents: deng, ariza, bledsoe, etc. Sidenote- How awesome is Mafia Mitch flying around making all these moves? Dude is all in for winner. Go Lakers.

    • fuck nash man

yeah fuck those fans that want to give up and use the cap space to sign B and C grade players.
      It’s not the Laker way.

    • Badazztj12

I mean like damn why wouldn’t they be interested and they are having these meetings with us

    • DKWTTY

Yeah say that when next season we have the D-League All Stars starting for us. You forgot to add Kyle Lowry already signed, Collinson, Thabo, Gortat. Those are players who Lakers fans wanted. No one cares about Kaman! What’s embarrassing is delusional Lakers fans who think we have a chance to land Lebron. There’s 0% chance that ever happens. Melo is a possibility but the fact of the matter is the Rockets and Bulls are currently better than us. This arrogance is the same reason why Dwight Howard is currently playing for the Rockets. I remember everyone swore up and down he wasn’t leaving either. How do you figure if we don’t land Melo and Lebron that we have a shot at those guys when you just said they are waiting for them to make their moves? So going back that they’d obviously want to go where Lebron or Melo go right? How do you know what those players are waiting to do when others are signing deals quick? Mitch can fly to the moon, that doesn’t mean any of these guys are going to sign with the Lakers.

      • Chrmngblly

Howard left because Jimbo hired the wrong coach for Howard. Phil could have turned those guys into a team.

        • DKWTTY

I’m talking about after the fact. They could have fired D’Antoni if that’s what Dwight wanted anyway but he just wanted out. He didn’t want to be a Laker but Lakers fans swore he’d be back. This is the same ignorance and arrogance that will come back to bite us in the ass when Melo doesn’t sign and we have a team full of D-League players.

          • Chrmngblly

Yes. Fans from fantasyland….I have no idea who would be the coach in either case. There really aren’t too many good experienced coaches left. They could maybe get a good assistant coach to take the helm.

Also, we are losing the best talent from “the Lakers tree”. How do you let the PJ mystique go to the competition? I would have shit-canned JB in a heartbeat to keep Phil around. He and Mitch could have been a good team.

  • Saad Hasnain

We’re not going to land Melo or LeBron…and let’s be honest … even if we do land Melo how the hell is that going to work out on the court with Kobe? Two alpha dogs is not going to work well…We’re in for a rough couple of years smh

    • Adriel Cherreguine

But it work well in Miami though, 3 all-star leading scorer of their team compliment each other to make it to the finals 4 straight years. I think it`s gonna be the same for the LAL,though Melo and Kobe we`re called by some as Ball-hog. But for sure Kobe knows what his primary role in the team and do whatever it take to make it to the finals. Decreasing the scoring load of Kobe doesn`t mean decreasing the $ in his contract. And he did Double-Double 2 seasons back. He`ll most likely do the same for him to have his 6th ring. And that`s all matters to Kobe, the Ring.

  • Bravo

why are people complaining about the Lakers chasing big names? yea were missing out on meeks and kaman but in reality theyre not gonna matter if we sign a melo. we may not get any of the big free agents because our roster is horrible right now, but if the lakers keep offering superstars 25 million a year contracts to play in LA, someones bound to take it

  • Hank

I don’t mind them going after the big fish. They have to try at the very least. And the Rockets didn’t get to meet with LBJ’s agent, it was only a phone call. LBJ reportedly doesn’t want to play with Dwight. The fact that LBJ’s agent scheduled a face to face with Mitch says a lot. It’s a longshot, but at it’s something that the Lakers are given a chance to physically step up to the plate.

    • Badazztj12

Espn thinks we are crazy because we think we can at least get one of them. Why wouldn’t they even meet with us if they weren’t interested?

  • Mr. Purple

As much as people say this is not possible, I think Melo and Lebron may see the Lakers as being a winning fit with a bright future in one of the biggest markets in the country. Melo came out here, and so far the Lakers are on a short list of even phone talks for Lebron. Lebron going back to an injured Wade who Kobe will play better than any day.. and a Bosh who is probably not better than Gasol anyways? Lebron and Melo could have a powerhouse built around them with the Lakers rebuild. The heat just lost in the finals and their current roster is not getting better- and the Knicks are obviously in just as bad a rebuild. Carmelo and Anthony are leaving their teams to win now.

  • Vincent

    Mitch like a boss.

  • Marlon

Mitch is the best GM in all of sports for a good reason and it’s no accident.

  • Mattie

Honestly if Mitch Kupchak signs LeBron and Carmelo he will become the greatest GM in NBA history.

  • Allan

Steve Nash is the only hurdle getting rid of his $10 million dollars is a huge issue and a obstacle, nobody will touch that expiring contract unless Phoenix or Toronto want him for marketing reasons and to sell tickets as a attraction of a hometown guy that is doing his farewell with them.Lakers would at the very least need to trade a combo of Julius Randle,Steve Nash,Robert Sacre and a 2019 first round pick to any team with enough cap space to absorb all those contracts in a perfect world Steve Nash would just fucking retire but this is no perfect world and that guy is not retiring anytime soon.Stretch provision wouldn’t free up enough money to outright sign both LeBron and Carmelo. But with Randle included in any trade involving Nash it is easy to dump them off damn right it is.Teams love Julius and want that guy he is projected to be a superstar.

All they need to do is trade Randle and Nash and Sacre to Philadelphia for a future second round pick and then in a separate trade with Philadelphia after LeBron and Carmelo officially sign the Lakers send the $2.8 million dollars Trade Player Exception and the Lakers 2019 first round pick to Philadelphia for Michael Carter-Williams.

The reason Philadelphia agrees to that trade is because the Lakers traded them Julius Randle and the pre arranged agreement is we send you Lottery Pick Julius Randle and Nash plus Sacre but you send us Michael Carter-Williams for the Trade Player Exception and a 2019 first round pick after we sign LeBron and Carmelo so it won’t count against the salary cap since it’s after they sign and we are using the TPE which allows teams to go over the salary cap since it’s a Trade Player Exception and the salary of MCW fits right into our TPE as he makes $2.2 million and the TPE is $2.8 million.

Mitch is the greatest build him a statue if he pulls this off.

  • Julio

Mitch the boss and he has wise guys helping him out.Mitch and The Wise Guys.

  • CORKY CARROLL

All this is great, but that said…. and I say this again…. we better have a solid Plan B ready to go asap. The cream of this years FA’s are getting signed by the minute. Getting both is so far fetched, one or the other still is a long shot, like half court or so, but worth the shot. But in the advent we miss….. who ya gonna call?

    • Bruce

in the event we miss, we call Kendall Marshall, Kent Bazemore, Ryan Kelly, Xavier Henry, Jordan Hill, etc…see where I’m going with this? same old crap of a line up as last season and we ain’t going nowhere.

  • la la honey cheerios

In an odd quirk of the rules, free agents who never signed on to other teams are still on the books unless renounced. That includes long-retired Ron Harper, who won two rings with the Lakers in 2000 and 2001. He accounts for $2.9 million on the team’s cap.

In addition to Harper, there is a combined $14.1 million in Lakers’ cap space going to Karl Malone, Horace Grant, Mitch Richmond, Jim Jackson, Shammond Williams, Ira Newble, John Salley, Joe Smith, Theo Ratliff, Andrew Goudelock and even Denver Nuggets Coach Brian Shaw.

It’s strictly a clerical issue. General Manager Mitch Kupchak can simply wipe that slate clean by renouncing the likes of Shaw, Harper and the odd, historic list.

Should Kupchak renounce all non-guaranteed players on the roster — such as Chris Kaman, Nick Young, Jordan Farmar and Gasol — the team would have about $22 million to spend.

If the Lakers choose to stretch Steve Nash’s $9.7 million over three seasons, at about $3.2 million a year, spending power could increase to as high as $28.5 million.

    PER Eric Pincus LA TIMES

  • la la honey cheerios

If Mitch and the Lakers FO is serious about keeping Julius Randle while adding LeBron and Carmelo then it’s time to renounce all the free agents and also time to either trade Steve Nash to a team that can absorb is expiring contract or best use the stretch provision on Nash. But it’s time to be proactive and make these necessary moves to clear out cap space because it’s top priority to get LBJ+Melo.

  • Quentin

The Lakers will get LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.Mitch is the best GM ever.

    PG MCW
    SG Kobe Bryant
    SF Carmelo Anthony
    PF LeBron James
    C Pau Gasol

LeBron and Carmelo are interchangeable and that makes them super dangerous if paired together. That’s the most dangerous NBA lineup i have ever seen on offense. They can all score and pass the ball, also MCW,Kobe,Lebron can defend.

    • Badazztj12

We are not trading Randle for MCW plus philly already have good big men.(Noel, Thad young, Emiid)

  • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Chris Broussard said Ramona Shelburne said… Awesome reporting, guys!

  • kiko

Bob Mcadoo and jeff van gundy or george karl and mike woodson and mark jackson next new head coach LA Lakers right now please

  • Swaggy C

It makes me wonder what went on in that meeting with Melo yesterday? What was said that made Mitch to fly our right away to try and set up a meeting with LBJ? I am sure Melo said you can get me if you get Lebron! And it really makes me wonder, does Mitch have some insane trick up hi sleeve that no one in the league knows about or is he’s really shooting for the stars. But either way, I hope when he means he’s going all in, that it means theres a Plan B, C, D, E…….. coming quickly as possible. And another thing, I know Mitch is the GM, but why isn’t Jim going in the lions den with Mitch? Or why isn’t he calling players and setting meetings?

  • Bruce

I really love the effort the FO is putting in to try and bring Melo and Lebron to LA, but I still don’t see any of the big 2 signing with the Lakers. I just wish they put more time and effort on the other FAs that’s more realistic and attainable.

  • Kobe Gagnon

The only thing these teams are doing chasing Lebron is feeding Miami fuel to keep him satisfied

  • Richard

Because the Lakers and the 3 superstar players are still talking, I think its time to let them continue their talk. I have given my thoughts on Lebron, Camelo, Pau and the Lakers situation pretty thoroughly now. The three players are taking the time to go through the process and assess/analyze their situations to make the right decisions for them going forward. Which I expect will be very soon. All we can do now is hope and pray that they choose to join our past great Laker Legends and continue our great tradition of winning championships as a part of the LOS ANGELES LAKERS.

  • Bryant T. Jordan

I’d be very, very surprised if we landed Melo and downright SHOCKED if we landed LeBron … but, I would be happy with an Isaiah Thomas / Kobe / Trevor Ariza / Julius Randle / Pau Gasol starting five … and that is absolutely do-able!

I know this is a little off topic from the superstar discussion but it just donned on me and I wanna know what you guys think. Sixers drafted Joel embiid even though they have Nerlens Noel. Now I know that Embiid will be out for a few months but what happens to Noel once embiid comes back? I’m watching the ORL-PHI summer league game and Noel is absolutely raising eyebrows. I know it’s just summer league but wowww he’s developed a very solid post game. Would it be crazy if the Lakers were able to trade for him?
